Poetic Iridescence of Biplab Majumdar

Indian English literature has produced a galaxy of versifiers in

English poetry who have earned name and fame in the creative
world. Biplab Majumdar, D.Litt, is the glittering Indian English
poet from the fertile literary soil of Kolkata who belongs to both
Aurobindonean and Ezekielean School of Poetry in English poetry.
Biplab Majumdar is really a versatile genius who persuades a
number of the verse- suitors for the spiritual sensations amidst the
materialistic winds blowing across the continent. His prime
purpose is to perfume the piggish philosophy with poetic pigments
on one hand and creative approach on the other to turn this hell in
to a land of heavenly dale. The spiritual sensation he exhales, the
poetic pigments he spreads, the poetic doctrines he spreads, the
message of natural order he vomits, the poetic exploration he
muses, the cultural cult he versifies and the mythical meridian he
exhumes blossom like the fragrant flowers of the poetic meadows
in and outside India. His poetic doctrines that he exhumes for the
ignorant masses guide many a piggish head for the spiritual
sensations in their lives. His poetic passage is really a heavenly
abode for all those who wish to upgrade themselves with the
passage of time. It is the poetic passage that sooths the ailments of
the masses without any obstacles. His poetic concept that he breeds
from one poetry book to another for the upgradation of the
humanity without fear or favour has been warmly appreciated by a
number of verse-suitors that in return honored him with several
literary awards in time.
Love and peace are the birthrights of all living beings
in general and the human beings in particular on this strifestricken earth. His concept of all types of love sensual sensuous,
platonic and spiritual is really a poetic nectar not only for the
versifies but also for the common masses that keep them in the

seventh heaven without hindrances love is the eternal bliss of the

human beings that keeps them ever energetic creative and fertile.
The man who is deprived of the essence of love eats his own mind
and lives ever in Hamletian situation. His concept of love is really
a red, red rose that flourish with the passage of time. Like Stephen
Gill Biplab Majumdar aspires for the global peace for all the
living beings. His concept peace that originates from the corner of
the poetic heart appeals majority of the masses due to the
troublesome life in this world. It is only peace that provides ample
opportunity to flourish with chastity, purity and divinity over the
corpse of the sophistry. His proverbial passage is not less fragrant
than any other poetic pigments in Indian English poetry that brings
to light the poetic maturity of the poet amidst the creative writers.
The romantic ingredients- love for nature and its iridescence,
focus on ruralscape, riverscape, junglescape, hillscape and
meadowscape, lyrical luminosity, imaginative vision, mythical
meridian ,poetic style, medieval elements, simplicity, subjectivity
and various others are frequently found across his verses that make
him not only a romantic poet but also lays foundation of the
romantic tradition of writings in Indian English literature.
The Augustans poetic flavor, satire, humour, irony, philosophy,
couplet and several others flourish altogether with the romantic
ingredients that makes him a transitional poet in Indian English
literature. Appreciating his poems Patricia Prime observes:
Majumdars poems are full of articulation of light: light
transcends, enlighten world, the sun peeps in the sky,
Perhaps before light and aspire for light. His haiku turn light
into sound. It is this interest in the energy of language and its
potential for exploring the shapes of meaning that lie within the
world around him and fuel his work which make Majumdars
haiku so forceful. He bears witness, and he chastens the outside
world from a distance moral as well as physical that inhabits
humanity. He reminds us that, whatever our dreams, whether or

not they are accomplished, nature always regenerates and so too

will our dreams:
All the buds and seeds
Tell us the tale of morrow
A dream never dies
The moral and the sacred, whatever the shape words give to sound,
silence, life, love and death, there is an order that, whether real or
illusion, creates a pause in the chaos and rush of time; a
punctuation in which sudden glimpses of love can flash across the
consciousness. It is very much present in Majumdars haiku:
Every flower bears
Fragrance of its own, like each
Woman of this earth
These are haiku which reward concentrated reading, and the
cumulative effect is meditative. Majumdar is attentive, his eye and
ear are tuned, so that light and sound subtle and luminous - are
often partners. Birds in the leaves, flooded roads, a rose, the ocean,
a fruit loaded branch, rain: the images are vivid. Elsewhere it is the
transparency of words, a graveyard, night birds, a foamy moon of
ageing that capture the eye, the ear and the mind:
Fog of memory
Insecurity hugs, old age
Basks in solitude
The intensity of many of these haiku grows out of Majumdars
preserved moments. Place, light, sound, nature, weaves a dance
through haiku that evoke beauty as well as a gentle power, treading
a path that is at once evocative and memorable. The technical
resource, the song, this too will stay with the reader for a long
time.(2014:180)

As a matter of fact Biplab Majumdar belongs to

both Aurobindonean and Ezekielean School of Poetry due to the
blending of the cultural ethos with the burning problems all
through his poetic groves that make him a poet of recognition in
the firmament of Indian English poetry. The poetic doctrines he
propounds purifies the poetic passage to its utmost degree. Though
he belongs to duo schools of poetry, yet his writing shows
inclination to Ezekielean rather than Aurobindonean School of
Poetry in Indian English literature.Dr.Manoranjan Das glorifies his
poetic works in this stanza:
Biplab, you are the treasury of love,
Where the pious comport is cultivated;
You are the domes of wills, at all,
Hovering with the base:;thats motivated.
Your works and activities are noted
With the passion and pleasure;
You are truly the sea of words
Where the genuineness is fair.
You are the mirror of moments,
Basing with beauty, at ease;
Here is your nobleness, to a will
For the development of time to appease.(2015:5)
Like Jayanta Mahapatra Biplab Majumdar
paints a painterly picture of the situations, issues and feelings in his
works that stir sensations for all those willing to pursue their career
in the poetic meadow. His sensational poetic passage pierces the
poetic nebulosity for the favour of the creative deity for Tom, Dick
and Harry on the strife-stricken terrain. His poetic iridescence is
really a matter of cynosure for the musers and the versifiers alike.

He is really a sensational poet of this contemporary poetic milieu

who will remain glittering in the womb of time. The free verse,
native, cultural and mythical words, proverbial passage, pictorial
pigments, parable, couplet, satire, humour, irony, emotional
eruption, lyrical luminosity and subjectivity are the prime poetic
weapons of his poetic passage that flourish from one stanza to
another all through his verses. His poetic philosophy over the
subjects of love, beauty, death, modern race, religion, culture,
ecology, friendship, life , nature and various others explore new
vistas of creative energy for the literary sensations all around the
corner. Like Nissim Ezekiel Biplab Majumdar paints a painterly
picture of the society in general and the human nature in particular
in this strife- stricken state. The false ego, greed, jealousy,
superiority, hypocrisy, selfishness and various other imperfections
are the products of the ignorance of the human beings from which
majority of us are infected seriously . As a result the poet purifies
the purpose of life that runs wild from imperfections to perfection,
injustice to justice and ignorance to wisdom for perfection.
It is natural order that guides the course of the human beings for
the call of nature. It is human nature that is finer than nature.
Biplab Majumdar establishes a great relation between Nature and
Human beings because human beings are the part and parcel of
nature. It is Nature that stirs for emotional outburst in life. He
seeks serene solitude within his life of lotus for want of wisdom.
Appreciating his poems Patricia Prime observes:
Majumdar comes into his own in these personal poems, where
there is room for ellipsis and often humour. His strengths lie in his
wit and an imagination that opens up the world to the reader, in
pacing that sometimes works so well that the rhythms drive the
narrative. In the title poem, he begins,
A soft voice rises up from the depth of
transparent lake at odd hours

The form is certain and strong; it stands in counterbalance to the

theme of peace and tranquility in the poem.
In Autumnal afternoon, Majumdar creates another
narrative, this time in a form that allows long lines that are all left
aligned, the weight of the poem depending upon the massed
togetherness of the words rather than the spaces between them.
Theres the lovely line, the whole day passes on the wings of
farthest kites . . . This implies that his solitude and reverence for
nature is the source of much of his poetry(2014:183)

B.M.Jacksons poetic potion, Patricia Primes poetic

aroma, Ruth .W. Schhulers good humour, Stephen Gills thrilling
message of peace, John B.Lees poetic meridian, Joy Rainey
Kings poetic wing, Teresinka Pereiras aura, Zhang Zhis staring
passage and P.C.Zalonis philter, Tennysons perfection and Tony
Morrisons paragon are wreathed artistically throughout his verses
that make him a poet of global repute inspite of the earthly stormy
winds blowing across the continent. His romantic passion, classical
approach, innovative thought, and poetic style make him a poet of
exploration and creation without exaggeration. Like Syed
Ameeruddin Biplab Majumdar prefers arts for arts sake to other
techniques across his poetic approach so far his pattern of
verification is concerned. His emphasis on a number of burning
national and social problems reminds the poetic passage of Nissim
Ezekiel while the painting of ruralscape and templescape revives
the poetic cult of Jayanta Mahapatra. The prime purpose of his
poetic passage is to explore the new vistas of knowledge to
creative literary sensations and, above all, to fire the imagination of
the creative soul amidst the stormy monetary winds blowing across
the continent. The prime purpose of his poetic world is not only to
show the mirror to the society but also to guide the masses for
spiritual whirlwind all around the continents. What more does a
man need from a poet ?

Emotional outburst, glittering poetic passage,

emotional exploitation, painterly painting,
natural iridescence
,beautiful description of human feelings and the philosophy of
sufferings--- all these things are presented very artistically
throughout his verses that make him a poet of global repute with
might and main. The poetic beauty his poems exhale, natural
iridescence it spreads, style it incorporates, mythology it
includes ,sensation it stirs, philosophy it propounds, capital idea it
possesses, various figures of speech it possesses and the poetic
doctrine it propounds stir sensations to all those shaping soul for
the literary whirlwind for Tom, Dick and Harry on this strifestricken earth. He is really a burning star of the literary orbit who
has started to perfume the poetic passage and will continue to
perfume in the womb of time . One must remind this stanza of
Manoranjan Das:
You poetry is the fact of history
With philosophy,
By scrolling of prophecy;
Here you have the generalization
of yesterday,
following the phenomena
of forces and feast as
You are the true expression
Of monuments, names, words
By enacting the tradition, evidences.
Here is your axioms of accidental
and transitional
human nature:
Thats essential and
immutable.(2015:14)
