International Applicant Guide to Ontario’s Colleges
The information in this guide is to help you plan for your college studies in Ontario. For program
information or to apply online to an Ontario college, visit the ontariocolleges.ca website.
PLAN your Studies in Ontario
general information for studying in ontario
• You may only study as a full-time student.
• You cannot come to Canada as a visitor and
then attend college in Ontario. If you plan to
attend college when in Canada, you should
make the arrangements before you leave your
home country.
• Many colleges offer English as a Second
Language programs to help you improve your
language skills. Contact the International
Office at the college of your choice for more
information.
• Most colleges have an International Office
where staff can answer your questions and
help you with:
- travel arrangements
- finding a place to live in Ontario
- banking
- translation of legal documents
- finding your way around the community
- college tours
Some colleges charge additional fees for
services provided to international students.
For details, please contact the college
directly.
• International student fees are approximately
$10,000 in Canadian funds per year (two
semesters). Colleges may also charge
additional fees.

• You are not insured for medical, hospital or
dental care by the Canadian government.
However, most of the colleges have a health
plan available for international students. At a
few institutions, this insurance is included in
tuition fees for full-time students. Other
colleges charge an extra fee for health
insurance. For details, contact the
International Office of the college you are
planning to attend.
• You cannot receive financial assistance from
the Canadian government. As part of the
immigration requirements, you need to prove
that you have enough money to fully support
yourself and your dependents during your
stay in Canada.
• Funding for international students is limited.
However, your home country may have
funding available for students who wish to
study abroad. Once enrolled at an Ontario
college, international students usually qualify
for the same awards and scholarships as
other students.

• *You should not expect to fund any part of
your studies in Canada through money
received from part-time employment while
attending college. However, international
students can work in Canada in the following
situations:
- employed as part of a course of study, such
as a work term during the year, as in
cooperative programs
- employed on-campus
- employed off-campus (requires an
“Off-Campus Work Permit”)
- employed after graduation in a study-related
job for up to two years

• Research ontariocolleges.ca and college
websites.
• Review a copy of college course/program
calendars from the colleges.
• Programs available to international applicants
include:
• Diploma and certificate programs
• Post-graduate certificate programs
• Bachelor’s degree programs
• English as a Second Language programs
(for applicants who need to improve their
English)
Areas of study include: business, applied arts,
health, hospitality and tourism, technology.

• *If your spouse is coming to Canada with you,
she/he may also be allowed to apply for an
employment authorization. Working without
an employment authorization is a violation of
the Immigration Act and may result in you
having to leave the country.

Ontario colleges. You can save your favourite
programs to a “wishlist” and return to them
later.

APPLY to an Ontario college
apply online
It’s faster and easier to apply to college online
using the application available on the
ontariocolleges.ca website. After completing
the application, send supporting documents
(see pages 7 and 12) and payment, if not
paying online, (see page 9) to the address
indicated.
To apply online:
• go to ontariocolleges.ca
• select Apply and click Apply Now
• create an account by entering a username
and password (Write down your application
number when you set up your account.)
• enter your personal information on the
“All About Me” screen
• go and select to which programs you want
to apply – in order of preference
• pay the required fees

and documents. This number is provided to you
electronically when you apply online.

You may select up to five program choices with
no more than three at any one college.

To support your application, you will need to
send us any other documents that are required
by the colleges, such as transcripts, English
language test scores, study permits, etc., (see
page 7 for more information).

you will be asked to print the Application
Verification Summary, which will confirm your
information.

You can make changes or check the status
of your application online or by calling the
Customer Contact Centre. Do not submit
more than one application for programs with
start dates between August 1, 2010 and
July 31, 2011.

You should apply to Ontario colleges as soon as
the application is available, in October, so that
you’ll have plenty of time to complete the
academic and immigration requirements before
your studies begin. Applications received
before February 1 for fall 2010 programs are
considered on an equal basis. After February 1,
applications are considered on a first-come,
first-served basis. However, depending on the
country in which you live, the application
process can take anywhere from three to nine
months, so it's best to apply much earlier than
February 1.

CONFIRM an offer of admission

Colleges will begin to inform applicants of their
admission decisions for fall 2010 programs as early
as February 1, 2010. Admission decisions for
programs that start at other times of the year will be
sent out throughout the year.

You could receive more than one Offer of Admission
depending on the number of colleges and programs
to which you have applied.
Confirm the offer to the college of your choice, on or
before May 3, 2010. Each college will determine the
due date to confirm offers made after May 3, 2010.
You may accept only one offer at a time.
Not all colleges will acknowledge receipt of your

4. Sign in to your account using your username
and password
5. From the Main Menu, click on Offer of Admission
6. Click on the link for the date that you want to
start college.
7. Select the Offer of Admission you would like to
confirm and click on the Confirm button

college because the program is no longer being

EXPIRED - The expiry date has passed and this offer

If after accepting an Offer of Admission, you change
your mind or receive another offer that you prefer,
you may accept the new offer (after one business
day has passed) so long as you confirm the offer

college that you have accepted its offer and your
current acceptance will automatically cancel your
previous acceptance.

Documents/ Transcripts
All international documents should be sent
when you apply. Missing documents may
delay the processing of your application by
the college. You need to send:

If you went to high school, college or university

study permit (Form IMM1294) at the nearest
Canadian Citizenship and Immigration office.
To do this, you need:

• a letter of acceptance from the college stating the
program of study, including start and end dates
• all letters and papers used to obtain your
student authorization (study permit)
