ABSTRACT
This report is a special report of the CSB Project, an Interspeeches International Inc.
education support project, carried out in Amasssoma.
CSB Project, Amassoma, is a project thats aimed at restoring the lost of children in
education. It is first of its kind in the locality. This report contains the pre-project activities,
the observations and the impact of the project. This report is therefore a property of
Interspeeches International Inc., hence all rights are reserved.

ARTICLE ONE
INTRODUCTION
Education as of old has not lost its essence as the liberator of the human society. Therefore
discarding it in this 21st century is tantamount to recoil into ancient slavery. A careful
research done by the mentioned organization reveals, those children within the milieu had a
dead passion for education, even to the extent of throwing the towel away, when the
opportunity is offered.
In search of the cause of this ugly state in this modern society, the organization found
out, that the problem is tied to the children colonies, which are the parents, the school
teachers and the local authority, as less emphasis on educational excellence.
Children need to be inspired and nurtured to produce the desired result for the
communities. If they are properly informed of the impending danger of the life without
education, they would better appreciate the treasure in their hand.
The promotion of mediocrity, through the recognition of unfortunate millionaire, is
what has really sapped the passion of children in rural areas, especially in the Niger Delta, as
they believe that it takes agitation and trouble to climb the ladder of success.
This wrong definition of success is what has cause many destined for the throne to
have sold their great future for few minutes of pleasure and excitement. And seems the local
authorities and the state are yet to understand the society they are building.
In this sorry state that would held bound the destiny of children, that have an
inalienable right to be celebrated and honoured, Interspeeches International Inc. took the
mettle to attack this vicious circle that would continue rather than stop.

The Project started with a research to justify the authenticity and necessity of the
need. Before then, the idea was shared to the Winning Idea Team (WIT) which later
metamorphosed to CSB Team. The idea was greatly applauded and commended to be a good
one, seeing the impacts and benefits to the community.
A team of three of the CSB Team went out for school census and the impact of
negligence by the various connected stakeholders of the education of the Amassoma child.
The report gathered about twenty (20) primary schools, both public and private, all within
Amasssoma. The exercise was tedious as the Team walked round the whole community in
search of these schools. Immediately after deliberation of the entire CSB Team of the results,
letters were forwarded to the directors of the schools via face to face contacts. Results by the
various head of schools were exciting with commendation of the project and that it will make
the children understood and answer the question why education?
After receiving the response from the various schools the team made it well to
forward CSB Brochure a document that contains useful information regards as to how the
bee will be conducted, the instructions, and the Word Bank to prepare the children
adequately, an exercise of preparation that lasted just for about 25days, the performance of
the children at the bee was exceptional.
And finally the Bee took place at the Prestigious Amasssoma Town Hall, featuring 8
schools. An event that lasted for about 4hours with 2:30 minutes thrilling spelling session by
the smart kids in time.
With the Niger Delta Television (NDTV), and the European Union, Amassoma
Information and Resource Centre, on ground to cover the event as the CSBTV host. The peak
of the event was the exhilarating moment when the time to decide winner came, as two kids
with uncommon brilliance turn the event to a scrabble, as they spelt exchangeable endlessly,

finally, the nine year old, JARIUS Deborah of FATA Comprehensive School leaving her
competitor OVUTU Nathaniel of Amazing Grace Christian School with the second place
entered the CSB Hall of Fame as she emerged as the Spellebrity.
The project was proudly sponsored by Mrs. Juliet Ebitimi who is a staff of Escravos
Gas to Liquid (EGTL), Mr. Tobechukwu O. a staff of the Stanbic IBTC Bank, and the
willful assistance of Mrs. China Mulade, Managing Director, Chinax Integrated Resources,
Warri, and Eseimieghan Stella, an ingenious student of Mass Communication at the
renowned Benson Idahosa University, Benin.
The various contributions by the Amassoma kinsmen and entire CSB Project Team
were what made the project to receive the stamp of excellence.

ARTICLE TWO
2.1
ABOUT CSB PROJECT
City Spelling Bee (CSB) was birth on the 29th September, 2013 by a team of ten (10)
members in quest to prepare the children which are the leaders of this great nation for
tomorrow. It is aimed at salvaging the standard of education via spelling especially at the
primary level in rural area.
Thus, in pursuit to achieving this goal, the team irrepressibly
took the bull by the horn. On the 30th September, 2013 the team embarked on School Census
to actuate the number of schools in community. The team report gathered twenty (20)
Schools both public and private.
On the 2nd October, 2013 the team engaged itself in face to face conversation with the
directors and the directress of these schools where the need for CSB especially among the
primary school pupils was thoroughly evaluated. Their responses to this clever and
resourceful idea were soothing, encouraging and brought CSB to the limelight.
2.2
CSB RESEARCH TEAM REPORT
The state of the education and schools in Amassoma was the need of the CSB Project. The
research team went from through the community to gather useful
information about schools. Some of the teachers and directors of the
schools expressed their dissatisfaction bitterly on the negligence of

the government in terms of salary and provision of learning aids.
One significant finding of the research team is the appalling state of the learning environment
of the children. The area is highly despicable, and unwholesome. This shows how, the
primary education has been grossly abandoned. However the performance of the children

shows that the committed children never allowed the environment to constrict their desire for
greatness.
2.3
CSB TEAM SCHOOL TOUR
The CSB Team reached out after the research with letter to various schools. Schools covered
were about 20. At every point in the tour, the schools received the CSB Team warmly.
However some directors explained their plights how short the
time for the children to prepare and ask about how they could
prepare. The CSB Team assured the schools that Practice

them for the bee. So the Brochures were distributed three (3)
weeks to the contest.

2.4
CSB SPONSORSHIP
In view of how capitally intensive the Project is. The CSB Team engaged the goodwill of
some persons through request via letters, however only few responded, Mrs. Juliet Ebitimi
Usadimen and Mr. Tobechi Oraekwegha. The project also received media sponsorship
from the state television (NDTV) and the Amassoma, IRC providing sound system and
technical support. Hall and chairs were provided by the Amananaowei and the CDC
Chairman.
2.5
CSB JUDGES
CSB Judges were nominated distinguish personality of high academic standing from the
prestigious Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. They were pre-informed and signed
interest to be part of the CSB Project.

FEGHABO Charles is a lecturer of English in the Department of English and
Literary Studies, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. He is currently defending his
Ph.D. at the Nigerian Premiere University, the University of Ibadan. He was the Chief
Pronouncer and Judge in the CSB Project Group.
Miss. GODWILL E. Favour is a superb senior student of English and Literary
Studies at the prestigious Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. Her commitment to
English language has distinguished

department. And she is a CSB

Miss. Florence O. Samson, an

English and Literary Studies at the Prestigious Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island.
Her commitment to detail editing he what avail her to partook in many projects in the
university community, like drama and poetic writing and also articles. She was degree two
CSB Judge in the CSB Project Group.
KOGIAM Richard is a distinguished senior student of English and Literary Studies
at the prestigious Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. His exceptional ability in using
literary devices is what has given him the courage to have authors many books. He was the
distinguish CSB Judge (Time Keeper) in the CSB Project Group.
2.6
PREPARATIONS
There is no small event was the mindset of the CSB Team. So the team after securing the

the whole place tidy up. It was like a community service that as CSB Team with holes in their
hand and head down takes care of the whole environment for the event. And also to officially
launch the project paid a courtesy visit to the royal palace.
2.7
CSB DAY
The event that was scheduled to hold kick-started at 9:00am indeed starting on time, as
contesting teams came as earlier, went to the registration unit headed by Mr. FAGBO Fola
to register and collects their tags. Total numbers of schools that registered for the bee were
eight (8).
The event finally progress to the mean, when the anchor KALANGO Daniel, mount
the podium thrilling the audience with spelling and funny words as to keep their minds relax.
After a brief session of introducing the contestants, the CSB Team Lead, gave his
opening speech, the speech read thus, This vision is a proactive step to salvage the future of
the Amassoma Child, because everywhere in the world education holds the same value, and
every child has an aspiration to be celebrated and honoured, and such ambition shouldnt be
thwarted by the disposition of its colonies. Therefore despite the fact that sponsors and
schools objected this ingenious gesture that engenders community development, the team
took the mettle to provide the needed platform for children to birth their dreams Alive.
However the CSB Team will not forget to thank as many that considered the future of the
Amassoma child by their sponsorship. Now the Bee can begin, I wish you all healthy
challenge. You are the best, never you settle for the second best. You Can Always Quit,
Dont Quit Now!
At the end CSB Team lead, to kick start the contest, the CDC Chairman Hon. BOB
Ere who also doubled his HRH Major G. P. Naingba (Rtd.), said in his opening speech, I

am greatly impressed with what I am seeing today, I never believed that the CSB Team could
do something of this kind, when they first told me about the project. He finally concluded by
encouraging the children to be bold and wish them good luck. He was further asked to launch
the spelling bee by spelling the word, START which he did enthusiastically, and was
correct.
Immediately followed was the reading of the rules by the CSB Chief Judge,
FEGHABO Charles. The rules read thus:
1. Each speller is entitled to 30seconds at the first round.
2. Both the second and the other rounds last for 20seconds.
3. There is no room for reverting of words, i.e. once you start spelling you are not
permitted to re-order the words again.
4. Every speller has equal chance to ask for clarification from judges without fear and
favor.
5. A speller is dropped from the Bee if fails to spell correctly beginning from the second
round.
2.8
THE BEE
The bee resulted into fifth rounds. The first and second round followed the order of the tags.
But at the third rounds, as fall-off was recorded it was now in the order of the outstanding
tags.
The children exhausted over 300 words. The first round was
a consolation and free round for all the children. Therefore
there was no elimination. The second round recorded 25

falls-offs, and second round 8 fall-outs, third round recorded
1 fall out. And finally bored down to the last five (5) standing, the period to determine the

spellebrity was no easy task for the Judges as children spell past Akeelah, with words like
Albatross, Montgnara and many others. The winning word was by a nine (9) year old
Deborah Jarius of Fata Comprehensive Schools, as she
spelt the word, paragliding to the surprise of the
judges and audience.

clapping and cheers. However those were eliminated
express deep pains with tear and emotional feelings. But promise themselves to come back
next season.
2.9
PROJECT IMPACT ASSESSMENT (PIA)
As pre-alighted in the CSB Proposal document of the immediate and potential benefit of the
project. The outcome of the project was greatly lauded by the Amananaowei of Amassoma,
His Royal Highness Major G. P. Naingba (Rtd.).
The community was excited as the NDTV was on ground to capture the performance
of their children in the competition. These are some of the impact of the projects:
1. Members of the community urged their children to take their studies seriously with
the performance of other children.
2. Children promise to enroll for the bee come next edition.
3. Community elites commended the gesture of the project, this is what one of the
community retired academia who happens to be one of the prominent chiefs in the
kings cabinet has to say, I am happy with what CSB TEAM has done to my
community, for promoting and creating public enlightenment in education, and I
strongly submit that CSB be integrated into the community annual festival that holds

every May, as a Spelling Festival. And CSB Project won a prestigious
COMMUNITY AWARD.
4. Establishment Interspeeches International Spelling Clubs (ISC) in various primary
schools to sustain the interest of children in learning.
5. Many schools (95%) directors expressed their deep gratitude to CSB Team in their
interview session with NDTV, and said its was first time to come for any
competition. And confess the confidence of their children has been increased.
2.10
OBSERVATION
The observations are for control measures. They are possible identified need-correction gaps.
The following were observed:
1. The projector did not show some of the slides. e.g. the winners details and pictures.
2. The audience was carried away by the performance of the children. Hence became
rowdy.
3. There were some flaws on the path of the judges.
4. Some CSB Team couldnt define their duty at the event, thus created lapses.
5. There was no special interview with any one of the CSB Team members by NDTV.
6. Refreshment serving was not properly timed and ordered. And also it was insufficient.
7. CSB Lead coordinator was restless through the whole program.
8. CSB Lead coordinator made a mistake in order of photograph of winners.
2.11
PROJECT SUSTENANCE MECHANISM
The project sustenance mechanism is what called for the establishment of Interspeeches
International Spelling Clubs at primary schools in the locality. The clubs are headed by
coaches of the CSB contested team and made of prime members who were the members of

the CSB contesting teams, and other 50 members. And are
expecting to be discovering new words through research and
practice, intra competition in the schools, where the winners of
the month will be forwarded to Interspeeches and gift pack will

be sent to the winners as rewards.
All the clubs within the locality from time to time as the schedule of the school calendar
permit will be coming together for meetings and contest to challenge themselves in spelling
and writing.
2.12
ATTENDANCE
The event recorded an amazing turnout of eight (8) schools, 5 each team which is 40%
response. And fabulous audience of over 300 persons, directors, coaches and community
elites were well represented including media personnel.

BUDGETING (PROJECT COST)
A strong financial plan was constructed, as a nascent idea, the cash flow was low from the
various proposed sponsor. However with personal commitment of the CSB Project Group,

though a total sum of 125 dollars were realized, but the following was expended as shown in
Table 2.2.

CONCLUSION/RECOMMENDATION
The results and impacts of project suggest that indeed anywhere in the world, education holds
the same value.
And children has huge potentials lying low in unrecognized areas, and that
government and non-governmental organizations should sponsors such kind of ingenious
projects that turn the heart of the child to deriving pleasure in learning.

The CSB Project Group 2013 consists of students and resource persons from several
disciplines. It is a passionate group, which has considered today a premium, to effectively
manage the challenges tomorrow brings.
The group engages their wealth of experience from the industry and financial
resources to ensure the project receives a stamp of excellences and some recommendations.
The project group, are the sponsors; they are the CSB Team and the facilitators. It is
never a coincidence for them to have been nominated. It is a well-deserved honour, one is
never too small to make a thousand.
CSB TEAM:
Diligent students come to salvage the future of their generation from the horrible avoidable
plights. They have seen that to be of use in the world is one of the greatest successes in life. A
team of ten (10), that is four (4) males and six (6) females.
They are all dedicated to their various commitments to their various tasks to ensure
the set objectives and goals of the projects are achieved.
ESEIMIEGHAN ThankGod; is an ingenious final year student of Petroleum
Engineering at the Prestigious Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. His commitment
to contextual factual writing and transformative speaking has enhanced his ability in
exploring the beauty of research and development. This also gave him an edge when he was
appointed as the Prime Coordinator of the GPT, in the University Campus Community,
where he owes many news brands to his credits, like the NDU Daily News, Changing

Times, and Campus News, with articles such as the sureway of love, the Societal
Monster, Lust Called Love, Tears of Engineers, the Silent Fighter and Strength in Her
Weakness, and a host of others, all with a central thesis of predicting and correcting impious
norms and values in the society, thereby creating a virtuous circle which stamps sustainable
development evidence in social equity, social security and economic prosperity of the nation.
His astute altitude to professional excellence has made him a member of Society of
Petroleum Engineers International (SPEi) and Winning Ideas Team (WIT). This has open
window for him to have engendered the needed changes in the Nigerian education sector. In
over 200 audience in an occasion of the fresh students orientation programme of the
Department of Petroleum Engineering, he gave a winning speech on students academic
prosperity, which was titled, Purpose Driven Academic Excellence. And the paper became
one of the most read in the NDU Daily News.
His passion to turn situations to servant opportunities led him to look at what should
done now, rather than what should have been done A condition of the later which is the
object of the 2013 ASUU strike. He believe that been reactive in the sense of trying to turn
back the ends of time is costly as it will impede pressing developmental trends, and threats to
socio-economic stability of the collective Nigeria.
Under this plight that is characterized with so many opinions, he found out that, the
university is not a traditional prime ministers that gave titles, rather a place of advance
research which enhance the quality of life of the society. Considering, decadence in the
education system in the tertiary institution wholly is not enough but could also be firmly
attributed to the falling standards in basic education.
With high sense to social transformation and intellectual liberation, he is the founder
and president of Interspeeches International Inc. an organization that models productive

educators, promoting and mentoring children that see themselves as social engineers that
builds sustainable development in their various communities through education support
project. One of such ingenious projects in rural areas is the Interspeches International City
Spelling Bee (CSB). He is the CSB Team Lead, piloting the ultimate task of salvaging the
future of teens.
ATETEDAYE Olamiposi Timothy; is an enthusiastic final year Economics student
at the Prestigious Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. His passion for maintaining
law and order evidence in accountability led him to join the movement for a stable campus
community of the ICPC Project Save Niger Delta University, served as a treasurer and
financial secretary. He is currently one of the drivers of the CSB Project, as the CSB Project
Group Secretary-General.
TOMMY A. Esther, a resourceful Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) student of
Accountancy at the famous University of Nigeria, Nsuka, holds degrees from Institute of
Management Technology and the Enugu State Polytechnic, all in Accountancy, currently
working in the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), Bayelsa State, and with
technical inputs as Researcher Personnel in the CSB Project Group.
KALANGO Daniel; is a diplomatic 3rd year student of History and Diplomacy at the
Prestigious Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. His unequal leadership style fetched
him one time Electoral Committee Secretary in the Departmental Association, and also in the
University Students Union Government (SUG) as an honourable Senator. His landmark
achievements in tested credibility finally made him the President of the Departmental
Association. He is a Strategist in the CSB Project Group.
FEGHABO Charles; is a lecturer of English in the Department of English and
Literary Studies, Niger Delta University Wilberforce Island. He is currently defending his

Ph.D. in at the Nigerian Premiere University, the University of Ibadan. He is a Chief Judge
in the CSB Project Group.
Mrs. AGBARAH Jane; is a splendid Nigerian strategist with outstanding ideas in
peak performance, work shop activation and process management, holds a Bachelor Degree
in Linguistic from the most celebrated Covenant University, Otta. She holds several credits
to her profile, because of her chosen language in linguistic, French option, she is friendly and
calm.
Her most welcome desired ability in going through works thoroughly to find out the
in-depth meaning of words and their origin has made outstanding in many education projects
which she engage in. She is a Language Editor in the CSB Project Group.
OSAIGBORO Lovina; is a keen contextual word editor and eagle-eye grammarian,
her exceptional ability in using literary devices in writing has given her room to have
published in both local and international journals.
She holds a Bachelor Degree in English from the Adekunle Ajasin University,
Akungba Akoko. She is an English Teacher works with Lakeland Group of School, Warri.
She is a Judge in the CSB Project Group.
OTHERS:
TOMMY T. Gloria, is a certified educator in Amassoma, she is learned in Ijaw, a graduate
of College of Education. OMANUFOGHO O. Angela is an A-level student, hoping to study
Political Science; she is a critical thinker and a strategist. Harry-Udo E. Peace is a gorgeous
Nigerian damsel thats doing her first degree in English and Literary Studies at the
prestigious Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. She is an expert in computer graphics
and word publishing. ANANGHO Grace Uzezi is a reliable final year Agric. and

SEGU Tonye George is a superb first year student of Computer Science in Niger
Delta University, Wilberforce Island. He is currently undergoing training as a Global ICT
expert at the Amassoma Information and Resource Centre (AIRC) provided by
European Union (E.U). He is the IT person in the CSB Project Group. WARIBUGO S.
Stella is a remarkable final year student of English and Literary Studies at the prestigious
Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. She is Research person in the CSB Project
Group.

Holes in the Middle

The children not denying the tension in the competition appreciated their friends as
they spell correctly while others drop out. The reality of the game became so clear when
someone thats sitting close to the other is gone, leaving a hole in the middle. It became
the case of rapture where one is taken another left. In the midst of this hot seat where
these children find themselves, the crowd and their schools are full of anticipation.
TheTheySurvivals:
Last Five Standing
are left with one hope. These ones have survived some test of
mettle of word, every one of them with one desire to enter into the
CSB Hall of Fame. As some focus their mind so desperately, one in the
midst spell for fun, and thats the nine year old Deborah Jarius.
Too Much Expectation!

The desires of the audiences have been heightened up by the performance
of these five talented kids. It became a challenge for the judges as the
whole Word Bank was almost exhausted. Before now the Chief Judge who
happens to be a lecturer of the Niger Delta University, defending his Ph. D
at the Nigerian premiere University certified the words to be too difficult.
But at the peak he found that there are no words these kids wouldnt spell
under reasonable time frame and under free tension condition. But with the
high expectation, from parents directors, coaches and friends, the kids
were careful to make mistakes.

Rewarding Excellence!
The battle for the CSB Hall of Fame was intense; however only one
could make it to the house, with each of the five persons that have
exhibited such kind of confidence and intelligence, they were all honoured
accordingly. OVUTU Nathiel and ONYERIN Oyeins all of Amazing Grace
Christian School, receiving the 2nd and 4th Place Awards. Ovutu who
emerged second spell missed the word embroidery as embroigery.
Its our first time

Its our first time says the Director of the Amazing Grace
Christian School, Pastor (Mrs.) Vera. As she rejoices and
expressed optimism that if are pupils could come up to
this stage with their very first outing. There is a greater
prospect. And thanked the CSB Project Team for the
awesome opportunity.
My Kids TRIED!
My kids tried is the word from the Director of
Christian Covenant Academy to her team, in
appreciation of this kids that have no experience
of somewhat called competition as EKARDE
Parsley won the 3rd Place Award. She however
expressed optimism that her school will make their
way to the CSB Hall of Fame. And appreciate the
CSB Project Team for the ingenious gesture.

THE HIGH POINT!
Nine year old Deborah Jarius exerted uncommon calmness and fun from the beginning of the
competition to the end. One notable thing about this kid according to her Coach is that she spells
for fun and finally at the bee, without much carefulness with her supersmart nature emerged the
Champion of the ACSB and became the first kid to enter into the CSB Hall of Fame and the CSB
Spellebrity by spelling the winning word, paragliding making her to have a total of 45points. She
never failed any of the words. By virtue of Deborahs victory her school got the Word Cup, the
champions belt and a Digital Library which is a long term project with her school. It was a breath
taking performance, everybody attest. Funny enough during the exclusive interview of Deborah
with the NDTV and European Union IRC, she couldnt speak much, but was just smiling and
encouraged pupils to read their books. Indeed it is in her nature to spell. She derives so much
pleasure; its something that makes her happy. Deborahs victory was symbolic and a landmark

Separated parents unites as

Daughter wins CSB Championship
Deborahs parents were not together before this time, but immediately,
Deborah won, because of the press people asking for the father, he was called
on phone to come for the interview and eventually, the relationship that was
broken up was re-united. Deborahs victory became the bonding factor of the
long broken relationship. Deborah was very happy as she can now see her father
and mother together once again. It is was more than a competition as the
audience says in the interview and strongly hope for the next edition.
She spells for fun!

She spells for fun, is the statement of the Deborah teams coach when
he was interviewed. However he never denied the fact that it was a
collective effort of all the kids in the team that made it a success. With
EBIKEMIYE Tamarameibi emerged as the 5th Place winner. FCS had
two medals. The coach of the team was very much dedicated and was
excited that his effort was not in vain. The cup is above Deborah,
meaning her school first! She is such a wonderful kid.
Happy for my Key Sister!

He had strongly waited for this period and couldnt hide his
happiness when his sister finally emerged the winner with
camera of media agencies about her face to collect interviews.
He waited right from the crowd when he was sitting. It was with a
live expectation and he never had less.
