Introduction
Keranique Collection
Introduction
Hair care has undergone a paradigm shift and consumers are reaping the benefits. The changes found in the newest
hair care products are evident on shelves today; indicating that the needs of real customers tackling hair care
challenges have come through loud and clear. In addition to the impact of heating and styling tools, as well as
environmental aggressors, hair is intrinsically complex and varied.
Like the skin care category, hair care is highly nuanced, and consumers face a variety of concerns, from dry, dull,
and frizzy manes, to limp, lackluster, chemically treated and overworked hair. Innovative product solutions are
increasingly addressing these needs, taking into consideration all ages and ethnicities, and offering functional
approaches to such concerns as aging, loss of shine and resiliency, sun damage and dryness.
The value of the global hair care market, which is an aggregation of shampoos, styling agents, 2-in-1 products,
perms and relaxants, colorants, and salon hair care, according to Euromonitor International, is $74.8 billion. In the
US, the hair care market topped $10.6 billion, with conditioners growing by 4% to reach $1.6 billion, and showing a
similarly strong performance in hair loss treatments. Hair strengthening and hair health benefits were popular
manufacturer claims which resonated with consumers, said Euromonitor, while naturally-derived oils and fruit
extracts continued to be popular in formulations.
Leading hair care companies in the US, according to Euromonitor, were L'Oral USA, The Procter & Gamble Co.,
Unilever Home & Personal Care, Alberto-Culver, and John Paul Mitchell Systems, rounding out the top five.
Consumer behavior across hair care has also been reflected in price changes in the market, most notably in the
salon brands, as professional salon brands competed against lower-priced mass market alternatives and diverted
salon products in mass channels; and while standard shampoo pricing remained flat, unit prices of conditioners and
styling agents increased, as oils, scents, and hair health claims encouraged consumers to trade up.
In addition, said Euromonitor, consumer interest in and awareness of natural ingredients is a growing trend across
the beauty and personal care market, influencing the interest in organic content in hair care products; while the
ethnic hair care segment also represents a growth area, as products targeted toward the needs of AfricanAmerican and Hispanic communities continue to expand. US marketers have also introduced non-ethnically
positioned hair care brands designed to appeal to multiple demographics.

Redken's Diamond Oil, a new innovation in the hair oil market, is designed to restore vibrancy and brilliance to dull
and damaged hair, and the complete line forms an ensemble to strengthen hair, add shine, and increase flexibility.
According to Redken, the Diamond Oil line is specially designed for damaged hair, which results in dullness from
frayed cuticles and compromised internal structure. Redken's Diamond Oil line features its Shine Strong Complex,
which blends apricot, camelina, and coriander oils into different layers of the hair to maximize shine and strength.
Camelina and apricot are said to fill the gaps in the intra-cellular layer to increase flexibility and luminosity, and
Redken's Interlock Protein Network (IPN) delivery system penetrates to the core to reinforce hair from within. The
IPN technology is comprised of three ingredients that work together in the wet and dry phases to repair hair from
the inside out. Keralink is a specialized protein co-polymer that acts in the wet phase by binding moisture to hair
while strengthening deep within the hair fiber. Amino Acids and Protein act together in the dry phase creating an
ionic bond with hair's keratin to rebuild surface protection and help enhance the hair's texture and shine.

Croda offers several ingredients that can assist with improving the appearance of the hair, enabling it to look shiny
and healthy. Crodamol SFX is a patented ester that is claimed to impart excellent shine and sensory attributes. It
can be used as a silicone alternative to provide a desired sensory profile from both rinse-off and leave-on
applications. Due to its high refractive index, Crodamol SFX has been shown to visibly increase shine on hair.
According to Croda, Crodamol SFX, like other emollients, forms a light film on the surface of the hair, providing
better alignment of the hair fibers, while decreasing the apparent cuticle angle on the hair fibers. This provides an
overall smoothing effect and delivers more shine. The ingredient is also readily biodegradable, is said to be an
excellent pigment dispersant, and is an alternative to volatile silicones.
Keradyn HH - Healthy Hair Dynamics, is a patented conditioning agent, also from Croda, that is said to increase
the movement of damaged hair, enhance fiber alignment, and reduce friction between hair strands for freedom of
movement. Hair damage caused by chemical treatments, heat, styling and UV results in high levels of inter-fiver
friction that can have an effect of how the hair moves. Keradyn HH is designed to influence the surface properties of
damaged hair, reducing inter-fiber friction and restoring healthy hair dynamics.
Keramimic 2.0, Intelligent Repair for Hair, from Croda, is a new keratin quat that is claimed to take biomimetics to
the next generation. Developed using the most recent advances in proteomics, the amino acid sequences of the
peptides found in Keramimic 2.0 match those present in the keratin proteins found in cuticular and cortical regions
of human hair.
In addition to Keramimic 2.0's biomimetic behavior, it is claimed to provide restoration to the areas of the hair that
need the most treatment. Analysis of a hair fiber shows the hair's anionic surface becoming progressively more
anionic as it is subjected to more damage towards the tip. Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy
(ToF-SIMS) image mapping technique was used to demonstrate that using Croda's cationic chemistry, Keramimic
2.0 deposits on the most damaged areas of the hair cuticle from root to tip, repairing the hair's surface where it is
needed most. According to Croda, its major benefits are, it is a highly specialized, keratin derived conditioning
agent; it intelligently treats the most damaged areas of the hair; and it is substantive to hair.

New product entries abound, and they continually draw on the highly innovative technologies and sourcing of creative
formulators. As more and more inventive approaches are introduced, hair care will continue to be a proving ground
for customers' targeted needs. In addition, with shine, health, and hydration top of mind for hair care product users,
it will be interesting to watch the evolutionary process as suppliers harness nature and leverage science to create
optimum results.
