Heritage Fair Project Outline for Grade 4s

Each student will complete a research project which will be exhibited in the
Socials Fair at Brooksbank. Selected student projects will be presented at
the Sea to Sky Regional Heritage Fair. Each student’s project will be
presented on a project board and in booklet form. Approximately 2 - 4 pages
of text and visuals (including photos, charts, diagrams, graphs etc.) are
required. Students are encouraged to include a “creative component” as
well. This could include a 3D model, collection, poem, newspaper article,
interview, artifacts etc.

1. a) Due Date: Friday March 5th


I have read the project outline with my child. I understand my role
is to encourage, offer suggestions and help clarify instructions. I
also understand my child will receive further clarification and

b) Due Date: Monday March 15th


Choose a historical event, person(s), or place important to the exploration of
Canada or to the exploration of a place outside of Canada by a Canadian(s).
Note: If you have another topic (related to Canada’s heritage), you may
describe the topic and explain why you would like to research it in a
paragraph before the due date.) The topic must be approved by the teacher.

c) List approximately 5 appropriate subtopics for your project. / 5

d) Collect at least 5 sources of information. At least 2 must be other than


the internet. List these on the reference handout. / 5

e) Obtain a project board and a folder to keep information. (The project


board does not need to be brought to class at this time.)

2. Due Date: Monday March 22nd

a) Complete approximately 1 fact sheet with point form notes (in your own
words) for each subtopic. / 10

b) Choose or create appropriate visuals (photos, maps, diagrams etc.) to go


with the text.
3. Due Date: Monday March 29th

a) Organize your facts and write a rough draft of the text in paragraph
form. Each subtopic should be titled. (Use a computer if possible.) / 10

4. Due Date: Monday April 5th

a) Proofread and edit the rough draft. Complete 2 good copies of the text
(1 for the booklet and 1 for the project board). / 10

5. Due Date: Monday April 12th / 10

a) Complete the project board. It must include a title, your name, text,
labelled visuals, a list of references, and possibly related 3D objects
(homemade or artifacts) and labels for them.

b) Complete the booklet. It must include a title page with your name, text,
labelled visuals, a list of references, and possibly a description of the
“creative component.”

6. Present your project to the class on Monday April 19th. / 20

7. Display your project at the school fair on April 28th.

8. If selected, display your project at the Sea to Sky Regional Heritage Fair
on Saturday May 1st.
