GENERAL DOUBLE INTEGRALS

Lab Time: ____________ Date: ___________

Useful Formulas:
When attempting to setup a double integral to find the volume under a surface, project the volume onto one of
the coordinate planes and look at the shadow region that results beneath the surface. This shadow region
will determine the limits of integration. The formulas for the boundaries of this shape are the limits of the inner
integral. Projecting this shape again to a shadow region on one of the coordinate exes will give the out limits
of integration. In general, the outer limits will be numbers only, but the inner limits may be formulas. If the
final integration is oriented toward the horizontal axis (ordinarily the x-axis), then the boundaries of the shape
should be oriented as the functions of the Top and Bottom edges of the region. If the final integration is
oriented toward the vertical axis (ordinarily the y-axis), then the functions should be oriented as Right and
Left edges.

1.

Setup and evaluate a double integral to determine the volume that lies under the surface f x, y 2 xy
and above the region in the xy-plane bounded by x 1 and x 2 and y 2 x and y 3 x .
The shadow beneath the surface looks like this:

This region projects nicely onto the x-axis, with simple formulas for our Top and Bottom edges:

Find the volume of the surface that is bounded by the plane 3 x 2 y z 6 and the three coordinate
planes.

The volume and its associated shadow region look like this:

Thus we need to solve for z to get the height of the box to use in the integration formula:
3x 2 y z 6 z 6 3x 2 y

The boundary region has a Top and bottom curve that are both lines, with equations y 32 x 3
and y 0 , respectively.
So the integral is:

Evaluate the following double integral by rewriting it with the order of integration reversed to make the
problem easier:
y 8

Since

y 0

e x dxdy

e dxdy , then the shadow region over which we are integrating is:

x2

which is directed toward the y-axis, with Left and Right boundaries of

If we re-orient this to the x-axis, we get:
