SPECIFICATIONS

Castings, unless otherwise specified on drawings, will conform to the general specifications as
outlined below. This applies to sand, investment, or vacuum cast parts. For any conflict among
purchase order, drawing and/or specifications; the purchase order takes precedence followed by
the drawing, then the specifications.
GENERAL
Because of performance or design characteristics, the specifications within this standard may not
fully apply to all castings. Suppliers are cautioned to check drawings and purchase orders for any
special tolerances or finishes pertinent to its requirements and to insure the drawings revision
levels are current.
CASTING QUALITY
Castings shall be smooth and clean, and free from any visible defects detracting from the
appearance of the casting. Variations in castings, due to the following causes, shall not exceed the
limits shown.
Porosity:
1)
Porosity on either inner or outer walls of pressure containing castings shall be checked to
determine if leakage occurs (either dye penetrant checking or hydrostatic pressure testing).
2)
Porosity on structural features is acceptable, if not too severe in depth, or too large in areas
that obviously affect the mechanical strength of the casting.
3)
Porosity on surfaces to be machined shall be such as to be removed by finish allowances.
4)
Casting impregnation may be utilized per ITT Bell & Gossett authorization.
5)
Casting impregnation is prohibited on castings certified to ASME specifications.
Voids:
1)
Pressure Containment Walls: Voids on either inner or outer walls of pressure containing
castings must not affect the structural integrity of the casting. The depth of voids should
not exceed 10% of the print wall thickness, 1/4" maximum diameter and a maximum of
three (3) voids in a square inch with a total area not to exceed 5% of the square inch.
2)
Structural Features: Voids on structural features must not affect the structural integrity of
the casting. The voids should not exceed 1/8" depth by 1/4" maximum diameter and a
maximum of three (3) voids in a square inch with a total area not to exceed 5% of the
square inch.
3)
Voids on surfaces to be machined shall be such as to be removed by finish allowances.
Flashing:
1)
Flashing or finning shall be removed from internal flow surfaces.
2)
Flashing on external surfaces shall be removed to within 1/32". Flashing tolerances for
external surfaces may be increased per ITT Bell & Gossett authorization.
3)
Flashing on datums and bosses will be ground flat.

CHAPLETS
Chaplets must be fully fused to cast metal.
HARDNESS
General hardness, including chill hardness, must be within the range specified for material
standard of the casting alloy, and shall be checked at the following points:
1)
2)
3)
4)

Castings with flange features, the hardness shall be checked on the flange surfaces.
Castings having no flange features, the hardness shall be checked on the end surface of
cored openings.
Chilled hardness is not allowed on machine surfaces.

COLD SHUTS
Cold shuts are not acceptable for castings that will function as pressure vessels. Cold shuts may
be acceptable on structural features per ITT Bell & Gossett authorization.
BURNT SAND
No burnt sand shall be left on machined surfaces.
MANUFACTURING DATUM REFERENCES
Areas or surfaces indicated as primary, secondary or tertiary datums, are intended for manufacturing
tooling locations and are to be free of irregularities over the entire area or surface indicated on the
drawing.
CASTING DATE, PART NUMBER AND FOUNDRY LOGO
Casting Date, Part Number and Foundry Logo are required on all cast parts. Many drawings have the
location for the cast date, part number and foundry logo specified. Where the location is not specified
on drawing, but datums are specified, cast dates, part numbers and foundry logos shall not be placed on
the following surfaces:
1)
2)
3)
