Dear Prof. Banerji,

CSIR had instituted a national award named "CSIR Award for S&T Innovations fo r Rural
Development" in the year 2006. The award recognizes those outstanding S&T
innovations that have helped transform the lives of rural people or alleviated the
drudgery of the rural people or have helped in generation of employment. Successful
S&T innovations that are implemented at ground level thus are considered. The award
carries a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh, a citation and a plaque.
A press advertisement seeking nominations for the said award for the year 2014 has
been released in leading newspapers today. You might have noticed th is float of CSIR.
Your organization has been working in the area of rural development. There might be
some innovation(s) which would meet criteria of the award and you might be interested
in applying for the award .
I am enclosing a copy of the advertisement and application proforma for your perusal
and for further consideration . The information is available on CSIR website
(www.csir.res.in) as well.
The last date for submitting nomination(s) in the prescribed proforma is March 20, 2015.
The nomination(s) should be sent by post as well as through e-mail (caird@csir.res.in).

An Indian team or an organization or acompany registered in
India; and
An S&T innovatio n that originated or has been applied in
India, with considerable Indian component.

CRITERIA
The Award would recognize an S&T innovation that has:
Created a paradigm shift in standards of quality of life or alleviated the drudgery of the
rural people;
Demonstrated competitive advantage and positIve user response;
Helped in generation of rural employment in the country; and
Shown a new way of conducting business to achieve social and economi.c
transformation in the domain of rural development.

CSIR AWARD FOR S&T INNOVATIONS FOR RURAL DEVELO PMENT

1.

Purpose of the Award:

The Award will recognize those outstanding S& T innovations that have helped
transform the lives of rural people or alleviated the drudgery of the rural people
or have helped in generation of employment. Successful S& T innovations that
are implemented at ground leve,l thus will be considered . The innovation
applied for, should simultaneously have also broaden interactions among
academic, R&D and rural financial institutions, industry and commercial
sectors , and rural people and provided newer vehicles for participatory
developments.

T he Award:

This annual award consists of cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh , a citation and a
plaque.

3.

EligibHity:

Any Indian team , or an organization , or a company registered in India will be

eligible to apply.

Selection Criteria:

The technological innovation should have :

Shown a new way of conducting business to achieve social and

Selection:

For selecting the awardee , a two-tier selection process will be adopted. The
initial screen ing , to shortlist the qualifying applicants out of the total
applications received , will be done by a commi,ttee of eminent experts
representing diverse disciplines . The Committee will be chaired by an eminent
rural development expert I social scientist! technologist! member of the CSIR
GB . The shortlisted applicants wiH then be considered by a high-level expert
committee chaired by an eminent rural development expert I social scientist!
technologist I Chairman of the CSIR Advisory Board .

The Award is normally presented along with the CSIR Diamond Jubilee
Technology Award and Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Prizes .
6.

Application for the Award:

The application for the award could be made in response to the advertisement
issued by CSIR which will also be available at the CSIR website
http://www.csir .res .in. The format of the application is provided in the
Annexure . The application should be sent in a plain paper through secured
means to:

The applicant while making the application for the award may please answer the

should be easily understandable by an educated common person. Also collateral

incl uded . The information thus received will be considered as commercial-in
confidence and will be accessible to the Awards Secretariat and members of the
