10 PLANTS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD

This lesson plan is intended to encourage students to read a


text closely to understand a cause and effect structure. It is
designed for grade 5 students and can be used as a whole
group study or as part of an independent small group or
Literature Circles-style learning experience for more proficient
readers.
LESSON TOPIC: TEXTS THAT USE A CAUSE AND EFFECT
STRUCTURE
Common Core Alignment: 5.RIT.5 asks students to compare
and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology,
comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas,
concepts, or information in two or more texts
1 session, 30 45 minutes each

Materials/Resources:
- 10 PLANTS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD by Gillian Richardson &
Kim Rosen on TumbleBookCloud Jr. www.tbcjr.com
- SmartBoard or white board
- laptops/iPads
- Map of the world (wall or on SmartBoard/laptops/iPads)
- learning logs or journals
- writing utensils, highlighter markers

Strategic Lesson Plan Development:


Introduction:
o Activate prior knowledge about plants what do students already
know?
o Activate a discussion around reading closely looking for details
and clues, points/proof (evidence), being aware not everything is
explained outright but may require some deep thinking,
comparing and contrasting, making connections with previous
knowledge, texts or events
o Display the title page for 10 PLANTS THAT SHOOK THE
WORLD from TumbleBookCloud Jr. on the SmartBoard and ask
students to make preliminary predictions about the text. What
clues does the title/cover photo offer?
o Discuss together, make predictions and record in learning
logs/journal
Instruction:
o Discuss with students the differences between fiction and
information texts which type of text do they think this is?
o Explain to students they will need to read the text for the main
idea and supporting details about any unusual plants, and take
jot notes in their learning logs
o Explain to students they will be working with this video for 8 10
sessions as they engage with their novels on TumbleBookCloud
Jr.
o Discuss with students the importance of re-visiting the text to
confirm/deny/find evidence this is what close reading is
o As students listen, ask them to jot any new or unfamiliar words
they hear in the text

o Create an illustrated, captioned depiction of the two plants you
found most fascinating
