Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology

In collaboration with ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Chicago, U.S.A., Punjab
University established Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology (DCET) in the
year 1958. Prof. R. E. Peck from I.I.T. Chicago headed the Department in the beginning and
laid foundation of its enduring work culture that is prevailing today.
Over these years, DCET has established itself as a premier institution engaged in imparting
quality technical education and churning out quality research in the domain of Chemical
Engineering. To meet present challenges as well as emerging trends in this field, we have
highly qualified core faculties from universities of USA, Canada, Germany, Denmark, New
Zealand and U.K. We have maintained world class curriculum, excellent laboratory facility
and support infrastructure. At any given time, the department has 450 students.
We ensure that students at us get world class technical education so that they are ready to
work in most sophisticated technical environment. The student body at University Campus
is composed of people from diverse socio-economic, ethnical and racial background. The
diverse environment at University campus makes students tolerant to differences of
opinion and receptive to new ideas. The learning culture at university trains our students
not only in technical but also in soft skills so that they can deliver result in every situation.
Our distinguished alumni are occupying coveted positions around the world. They are a
source of pride and inspiration to us. Our continuous interaction with alumni help us in
keeping the course content and training program abreast of the present as well as
emerging trends in the domain of Chemical Engineering. This makes our student ready to
meet present as well as emerging challenges in this field.
As we know the present economic downturn is lashing all institutions. The unprecedented
nature of this circumstance requires fresh thinking and fresh perspective. We have cared to
prepare our students to bring that freshness to the situation so that institutions can
rebound with double force.
We have celebrated Golden Jubilee of our Department in 2008. As part of Celebration, we
hosted CHEMCON-2008 (61st Annual Session of the Indian Institute of Chemical
Engineers). This also included a joint US-India conference on energy. This gave a great
opportunity to our students to organize and participate in this conference. This opportunity
made our students aware of the present reality and armed them to handle it successfully.
I appreciate the excellent support and enthusiastic co-operation received by us from all of
you in placing all our students in the previous session 2008- 2009. I hope to receive the
same and even more support from all of you in placing all our student of session 2009-
2010. I am confident that you will find your superstars of tomorrow in the current batch.
I cordially invite you to visit our department to conduct campus placement interviews for
the current batch.
With best wishes
vkrattan
Prof. V. K. Rattan

The Panjab University was incorporated in 1882 in Lahore and was

the fourth in United India. In 1956, university campus was relocated
in Chandigarh and its sandstone campus was designed by Pierre
Jeanerette under the guidance of the legendary Le Corbusier.
The main campus at Chandigarh is spread over 550 acres and is one
of the few Indian Universities possessing their own architectural and
engineering cells. The university has been identified as one of the six
centers in the country for super computer facilities to serve the
entire north-western region. It is the only university in the country to
produce two noble laureates, Dr. Hargobind Khurana and Dr. Abdus
Salam and our prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh.
The Energy Research Centre was established in 1983 in Department
of Chemical Engineering and Technology at Panjab University to
promote R&D and Extension activities in the emerging field of
Renewable Energy. It has emerged as a major focal point of R&D and
extension on energy and environment at national and international
level. Pioneering work in the area of solar thermal energy Storage,
Solar Detoxification, Biomethanation of agricultural/industrial/forest
wastes, Biomass combustion and gasification, Indoor Air Quality,
Energy and Environmental Conservation and Management and
Hydrodynamics of Polymeric Solutions is being carried out at the
Centre.
