Keeping in mind the recent oil spills at sea, spilling of oil on ship has become the most dreaded
accident without doubts. It is always better to take precautionary measures to prevent such
accidents. However, sometimes accidents happen without any warning, leaving very less time to
act. In this article we will learn what to do in case of oil spill on a ship.
There are two types of oil spill accidents on board a ship. One in which there is no danger of the
oil going over board; whereas the one wherein the chances of oil going overboard are maximum
is the most dangerous one.
Oil Spill on Ship
There can be two situations where in the oil spills over the deck and goes overboard causing
marine pollution:

Overflow of oil from internal transfer of oil through vent or sounding pipe of the tank.

Oil spill during bunker operation or sludge discharge operation.With

proper SOPEPequipment and training, oil spill over the deck can be contained and marine
pollution can be avoided.

Steps to Take in Case of an Oil Spill

1) If any body sees oil on deck immediately close the ship side scuppers and alarm the ship staff
by shouting and contacting duty officer on bridge and engine room.
2) Stop all the transfer immediately and locate the effected tank and its sounding pipe and vent
position.
3) Emergency muster to be called up by the master and everybody must carry out their duty as
listed in the muster list for oil spill.
4) Use of SOPEP equipments and other means to be done to contain the spill within the ship.
5) Lower the quantity of spilled tank to a safer level in any other permissible tank.
6) Putting saw dust over the scupper plug will give an additional barrier for oil to go overboard.
7) Collect the spread oil in a 200 liter SOPEP drum and clear the effected area.
8 ) Master to enter the whole scenario in the ships incident report form and call up for meeting to
discuss the accident so such accidents can be avoided in near future.
Oil Spill during Bunkering Operation or Sludge Discharge Operation
The following points are to be noted in case of oil spill during bunkering:
1) One stand by officer is always present in the bunkering manifold. If he sees any oil or leakage
near that area immediately shout stop to the bunker supplying vessel loudly or in the VHF. If
remote switch is supplied, immediately press the switch.
2) For sludge disposal operation, if any spill occurs immediately stop the ships sludge transfer
pump from remote panel, normally situated near the bunker manifold.
3) Inform the Chief engineer, duty officer about the emergency situation.
4) Scupper must be plugged before starting any of these operations, if oil spill occur on the deck
recheck the plug and put saw dust over it.
5) Master will call for emergency muster and crew will carry out their duties as per the muster list
for oil spill emergency.
6) Drip tray in bunker manifold must be check for over filling and should be emptied in 200 litre
drum if required.
7) A foam type portable fire extinguisher must be readily available to avoid the worsening of the
situation by fire.

Actions to be Taken in Case Oil Goes Overboard

1) If the oil spill goes overboard, the Master will immediately inform the coastal authority like
port state control and owner or office management.
2) Measures to be taken to limit the area of spill in the water with use of oil booms and other
effective SOPEP items and all efforts to be made not to allow further oil to go overboard.
3) Use of Oil spill dispersant chemical can be done to contain the spill but with prior permission
from port state authorities.
4) Contact with 24 hr Oil Spill Response Organization to be done by master for further cleaning
up operation by shore team.
5) Entry to be made in Bridge log book, Engine room log book and Oil Record Book about the
spill.

Teniendo en cuenta los recientes derrames de petrleo en el mar, derrame de petrleo en el barco
se ha convertido en el accidente ms temible y sin dudas. Siempre es mejor tomar medidas de
precaucin para evitar este tipo de accidentes. Sin embargo, a veces los accidentes ocurren sin
previo aviso, dejando muy menos tiempo para actuar. En este artculo vamos a aprender qu
hacer en caso de derrame de petrleo en un barco.
Existen dos tipos de derrame de petrleo accidentes a bordo de un barco. Uno en el que no hay
peligro de que el aceite de ir por la borda; mientras que el uno en el que las posibilidades de
aceite de pasar por la borda son mximo es el ms peligroso.
Derrame de petrleo de la nave
No puede haber dos situaciones en las que en los derrames de petrleo sobre la cubierta y se va
por la borda que causan la contaminacin del mar:

Desbordamiento de petrleo de transferencia interna de petrleo a travs de ventilacin o

tubo de resonancia del tanque.

Derrame de petrleo durante el funcionamiento bunker o flujo de lodo operation.With

adecuada SOPEP equipo y capacitacin, derrame de petrleo sobre la cubierta puede ser
contenida y la contaminacin marina se puede evitar.

Pasos a seguir en caso de un derrame de petrleo

1) Si cualquier cuerpo ve aceite en la cubierta cerrar inmediatamente los imbornales secundarios
buque y el personal de alarma nave por gritar y ponerse en contacto con el oficial de guardia en el
puente y la sala de mquinas.

2) Detenga toda la transferencia inmediatamente y localizar el depsito efectuado y su tubo de

resonancia y la posicin de ventilacin.
3) de obligaciones de emergencia para ser llamado por el maestro y todo el mundo debe cumplir
con su deber como aparece en el cuadro de obligaciones para los derrames de petrleo.
4) El uso de equipos SOPEP y otros medios para hacerse para contener el derrame dentro de la
nave.
5) Reducir la cantidad de depsito de vertido a un nivel ms seguro en cualquier otro tanque
permisible.
6) Putting vio el polvo sobre el tapn imbornal dar una barrera adicional para el aceite de ir por
la borda.
7) Recoger el aceite de propagacin en un tambor de 200 litros SOPEP y limpiar la zona afectada.
8) Maestro para entrar en todo el escenario en forma de notificacin de incidentes de la nave y lo
llaman para reunin para discutir el accidente por lo que tales accidentes se pueden evitar, en el
futuro prximo.
Derrame de petrleo durante la operacin de bodegas o de descarga de lodos Operacin
Los siguientes puntos son de notar en caso de derrame de petrleo durante el abastecimiento de
combustible:
1) Un soporte por el oficial est siempre presente en el colector de abastecimiento de
combustible. Si ve cualquier aceite o fugas cerca de esa zona inmediatamente gritar "stop" al
bnker suministro buque en voz alta o en el VHF. Si se suministra interruptor remoto, pulse
inmediatamente el interruptor.
2) Para la operacin de eliminacin de lodos, en su caso derrame ocurre parar inmediatamente la
bomba de transferencia de los lodos de la nave desde el panel de control remoto, normalmente
situado cerca del colector de bunker.
3) Informar al ingeniero, oficial de guardia jefe acerca de la situacin de emergencia.
4) Supper debe conectarse antes de iniciar cualquiera de estas operaciones, si se produce derrame
de petrleo en la cubierta vuelva a comprobar el enchufe y poner aserrn sobre ella.
5) Maestro exigir de obligaciones y el equipo de emergencia llevar a cabo sus funciones de
acuerdo con el cuadro de obligaciones para la emergencia del derrame de petrleo.
6) bandeja de goteo en el colector bunker debe comprobar sobre el relleno y debe ser vaciado en
200 tambor litros si es necesario.

7) Un tipo de espuma de extintor porttil debe ser de fcil acceso para evitar el empeoramiento de
la situacin por el fuego.
Acciones a tomar en caso de aceite Goes Overboard

1) Si el derrame de petrleo va por la borda, el Maestro le informar inmediatamente a la

autoridad costera como el control del Estado del puerto y el dueo o la gestin de la oficina.
2) Las medidas que se han tomado para limitar el rea de derrame en el agua con el uso de
barreras de aceite y otros artculos SOPEP efectiva y todos los esfuerzos a realizar para no
permitir ms petrleo a ir por la borda.
3) El uso de derrame de aceite dispersante qumico se puede hacer para contener el derrame, pero
con el permiso previo de las autoridades del Estado del puerto.
4) El contacto con la Organizacin de Respuesta 24 hr derrame de petrleo que se haga por el
maestro para la limpieza de ms arriba en la operacin de equipo de tierra.
5) Entrada que se har en el libro registro de Puente, Sala de mquinas libro de registro y Libro
registro de hidrocarburos sobre el derrame.
