Self Contained Breathing Apparatus, also known as SCBA, is a necessary protective
gear that is worn by paramedics, firemen, and people working on ships and oil rigs. As
the name goes, the breathing apparatus has all necessary equipments fitted into it that
will allow the rescue professionals to carry out their work without any interruption and
with utmost safety.
There are two major types of SCBA that are in use today the Open Circuit SCBA and
the Closed Circuit SCBA. The main difference between the two is that the former one is
used for rescue operations that tend to be very long. In this type of SCBA, the air is
continuously re-processed or recycled so that the wearer of the SCBA gets a continuous
supply of air. In the second variety, the oxygen is compressed to fit into air cylinders.
These varieties of SCBA are used for shorter rescue operations.

Mentioned below is the detailed list of equipments that are present in SCBA:
Air Cylinders
The first and foremost presence in the air breathing apparatus is that of Air Cylinders. In
the open circuit SCBA, the air cylinder is known as the re-breather which recycles the air
(as mentioned above). Air cylinders, on the other hand, are filled with oxygen in a
compressed form that enables a rescue professional to go into areas that are filled with
smoke and fire and free the trapped people successfully. The air cylinders in the
breathing apparatus need to be continuously checked after the rescue operation is
carried out so that they do not end up to be empty the next time a rescue operation
needs to be carried out. There are also extra air cylinders that are provided for the
people who have been trapped and rescued.
Protective Hood

The second-most important presence is that of a Protective Hood. Such hoods are
designed in a way that they cover all the parts of the face, have an eye-covering (visor)
that enables a person to see and also allow the required oxygen to pass continuously.
They also have tubes attached to ensure that the air passes continuously.
Portable Transporting Bag
The Portable Transporting Bag is also an important equipment of the breathing
apparatus. It can be filled with air cylinders, hoods and any other protective equipment
that would be necessary for the rescue operations. The bag is made up of a material
that would be resistant to damage-causing factors and thus can be effectively used in
any sort of emergency situation.
Portable Hauling Bag
The final breathing apparatus equipment is the Portable Hauling Bag. The main
difference between this type of carrying bag and the one mentioned previously is that in
this bag, an extra weight of the necessary items can be carried. It is used for the
purpose of getting the SCBA equipment from the headquarters of the rescue
professionals to the place where the incident has actually occurred. It is in only in the
accident site that the equipments are transferred from this bigger bag to the Portable
Transporting Bag.

A breathing apparatus has changed the entire rescue operation process, making it
simpler and safer. More and more lives can be saved because of the portability factor of
SCBA. It therefore becomes important and relevant to acknowledge and appreciate the
worth of the SCBA in todays times.

Ser un aparato respiratorio autnomo, tambin conocido como SCBA, es un equipo de
proteccin necesario que es usado por los paramdicos, bomberos, y las personas que
trabajan en barcos y plataformas petroleras. Como su nombre lo dice, el equipo de
respiracin tiene todos los equipos necesarios instalados en ella que permitan a los
profesionales de rescate para llevar a cabo su trabajo sin ningn tipo de interrupcin y
con la mxima seguridad.
Hay dos tipos principales de SCBA que estn en uso hoy en da - el Circuito Abierto
SCBA y el circuito cerrado de la SCBA. La principal diferencia entre ambos es que el
primero es utilizado para operaciones de rescate que tienden a ser muy largo. En este
tipo de SCBA, el aire es continuamente re-procesado o se recicla de manera que el
portador de la SCBA consigue un suministro continuo de aire. En la segunda variedad,
el oxgeno se comprime para caber en cilindros de aire. Estas variedades de SCBA se
utilizan para operaciones de rescate ms cortos.

Se mencionan a continuacin est la lista detallada de los equipos que estn presentes
en SCBA:
Cilindros de aire
Lo primero y ms presencia en el equipo de respiracin de aire es la de cilindros de
aire. En el SCBA de circuito abierto, el cilindro de aire se conoce como el re-respiradero
que recicla el aire (como se mencion anteriormente). Los cilindros de aire, por otro
lado, se llenan de oxgeno en una forma comprimida que permite a un profesional de
rescate para entrar en reas que estn llenos de humo y fuego y liberar a las personas
atrapadas con xito. Los cilindros de aire en el aparato de respiracin deben ser
controlados continuamente despus de la operacin de rescate se lleva a cabo de modo
que no terminen a estar vaca la prxima vez que una operacin de rescate necesita ser
llevado a cabo. Tambin hay cilindros de aire adicionales que se proporcionan para las
personas que han sido atrapados y rescatados.

Protector de la capilla
El segundo ms importante es que la presencia de una cubierta de proteccin. Tales
campanas estn diseados de una manera que cubrir todas las partes de la cara, tener
un ojo que cubre (visor) que permite a una persona ver y tambin permitir que el
oxgeno requerido para pasar de forma continua. Tambin tienen tubos unidos para
garantizar que el aire pasa de forma continua.
Bolsa de Transporte Porttil
El porttil bolsa de transporte tambin es un equipo importante del aparato
respiratorio. Se puede rellenar con cilindros de aire, campanas y cualquier otro equipo
de proteccin que sera necesaria para las operaciones de rescate. La bolsa est hecha
de un material que sera resistente a los factores que causan dao y por lo tanto puede
ser utilizado de manera efectiva en cualquier tipo de situacin de emergencia.
Bolsa de Acarreo porttil
El equipo final un equipo de respiracin es la Bolsa de Acarreo porttil. La principal
diferencia entre este tipo de bolsa de transporte y el mencionado anteriormente es que
en este bolso, un peso extra de los elementos necesarios se puede llevar. Se utiliza con
el propsito de conseguir el equipo SCBA de la sede de los profesionales de rescate al
lugar donde se ha producido realmente el incidente. Es slo en el lugar del accidente
que los equipos son transferidos de esta bolsa ms grande para la bolsa de Transporte
porttil.

Un equipo de respiracin ha cambiado todo el proceso de la operacin de rescate, por

lo que es ms sencillo y ms seguro. Cada vez ms vidas pueden salvarse por el factor
de la portabilidad de SCBA. Por lo tanto, se vuelve importante y relevante para
reconocer y apreciar el valor de la SCBA en los tiempos de hoy.
