en un mundo que se derrumba, lleno de conflictos y un sin fin de actitudes que reflejan la inhumanidad que existe
entre los hombres, nuestro quijotesco y gentil deporte nos regala una tregua poco frecuente en nuestras vidas.

en nuestro mundo de la pesca con mosca, los peces ganan más de lo que pierden. el pescador iluminado, jamás sale
perdiendo. Él o ella se enriquecen en formas que van más allá de la captura de una evasiva y desconfiada trucha. está
el sonido de un río que fluye por las montañas, el de un ruidoso rebaño de gansos, el de la protectora charla de los
mirlos de alas rojas, la dulce sensación de un buen lanzamiento y del agua fría que corre contra tus piernas, la
fragancia de los pinos, la visión de los pigargos en vuelo y al zambullirse, vislumbrar los elegantes ciervos y mucho más.
Robert traver, en su asombroso “testamento de un pescador”, dijo acerca de la pesca y las actividades al aire libre,
que estas proveen “Aislamiento sin soledad”. Pero hay más; existe la camaradería sin conflicto, la aventura, la
tranquilidad, el misterio y la quietud, una esperanza inacabable y siempre; la contemplación. el nuestro es un deporte
único, sin la mera necesidad de competir o de obtener puntaje y con la llegada de la pesca con devolución, también
sin necesidad de premios mas allá de la experiencia en si misma.
traver también escribió “tal vez un día llegaré a pescar una sirena.” Una declaración con un tono de humor,
sobre todo para un deporte que a veces se toma demasiado en serio, convirtiéndose a la vez en un profundo
concepto. Algo para remarcar en nuestra experiencia como pescadores, es la conexión que tenemos con lo
misterioso y salvaje, nuestras manos sintiendo la vida de una criatura a través de una línea y una caña.
Misterioso, porque del otro lado de la línea puede haber desde un pequeño pececillo hasta el pez más grande
que haya jamás existido, e incluso quizás hasta una sirena.
Alguna noche de invierno, siéntate cómodo al lado del fuego, prepárate un trago y acompáñame en una aventura de
pesca patagónica a través de las fotos de nicolas bovio y las anécdotas de amigos y mentores de la pesca.

in a world torn asunder with conflicts and never ending demonstrations of man's inhumanity to man, our quixotic,
gentle sport provides a rare respite.

in our fly fishing world, the fish win more often than they lose. the enlightened fisher never loses. he or she is
enriched in ways that go well beyond the capture of an elusíve, wary trout. there is the good sound of a moun-
tain freestone river, the raucous calls of a flock of geese and the protective chatter of red wing blackbirds. the
sweet feel of a good cast and of cold moving water against your legs, the fragrance of pine trees, the sight of
ospreys as they soar and dive, the glimpses of graceful deer and more.
Robert traver, in his wondrous "testament of a Fisherman," said of fishing and the outdoors, that it provides
"solitude without loneliness."there is more. it provides camaraderie without conflict, adventure, tranquility, mystery,
quietude, never ending hope and always contemplation. ours is a unique sport without the need of competition
or "keeping score," and with the advent of catch and reléase fishing, without the need of rewards other than
experience itself.
traver also wrote that "one day he might catch a mermaid." A wonderful light hearted-statement-from a sport
that is often approached too seriously. it is also an extremeíy profound concept. A highlight in our fishing
experience is the connection with something mysterious and wild, our hands feeling the life of a creature through
the line and a sensitive rod. Mysterious, as the other end of the line may hold anything from a tiny minnow to
the biggest fish that ever swam. it might even be a mermaid.
some winter night, sit comfortably by the warmth of a fire, pour yourself something wonderful and join me in
a Patagonian fishing adventure through the photos of nico bovio and the words of fishing friends and mentors.

Northern Patagonia
la Patagonia norte incluye las provincias
de neuquén, Rio negro y chubut. hace mas de 100 años un americano
llamado John titcomb sembró las primeras truchas en un arroyo cerca del
lago nahuel huapi y desde entonces el prestigio internacional de los ríos
que fluyen por esta región no ha parado de crecer. la región tiene sus
personajes míticos como el bebe Anchorena y Jorge donovan, también
tiene una casona llamada la hostería chimehuín donde estos grandes de
la pesca con mosca se congregaban para pescar la boca del río homónimo.
la Patagonia norte tiene entre tantos otros atributos al río traful con la
magnífica estancia Arroyo Verde, al río limay con sus impresionantes
marrones de fin de temporada, al río Malleo con su histórica estancia san
huberto, al río Rivadavia con el nuevo y lujoso lago Verde Wilderness
Resort; en fin, un sin fín de ambientes y refugios únicos en el mundo de la
pesca. Para Mel, la Patagonia norte no es solo historia sino también es
presente, en los últimos 40 años a pescado codo a codo
con los pioneros y hoy lo sigue haciendo con aquellos que lanzan sus
primeras moscas en las prístinas aguas de este lejano lugar.

northern Patagonia includes the provinces
of neuquén, Rio negro and chubut. over 100 years ago an American by the
name of John titcomb released the first trout in small stream near the
nahuel huapi lake, and since that time the international recognition of the
rivers that flow throughout this region has not stopped growing. the region
has mythical characters such as bebe Anchorena and Jorge donovan, it also
has a large house called the hosteria chimehuin where these fly fishing greats
would gather to fish the mouth of the river which carries the same name.
northern Patagonia has many attributes; it has the traful river with the
magnificent estancia Arroyo Verde. the limay river with its enormous late
season browns. the Malleo river with the historic estancia san huberto and
the Rivadavia river with the new and luxurious lago Verde Wilderness
Resort. the supply of places and lodges is unique and unmatched in the fly
fishing world. For Mel, northern Patagonia is not just history, it also means
present; during the last 40 years he has fished elbow to elbow with the pioneers
and today he does the same with those that are wetting their flies for the first
time in the pristine waters of this far away place.
 Río Traful
Traful River
Conocido mundialmente
por sus salmones encerrados
(salmo salar sebago), el río Traful en sus 22
kilómetros de extensión, ofrece condiciones de
pesca y belleza inigualables. La prestigiosa
estancia Arroyo Verde que bordea este río,
situado en el Valle Encantado, se ha encargado
de difundir anécdotas sobre sus famosos pools,
que han llegado a oídos de todo fanático de la
pesca con mosca.
Las aguas del Traful fueron por muchos años
compartidas por fontinalis y salmones encerrados,
aunque en la actualidad son las truchas marrones
y arco iris las que habitan el río en mayor
número. El salmón encerrado no ha
desaparecido, pero su pesca está reservada a
los meses de marzo y abril cuando los
reproductores bajan del lago homónimo.

Known the world over
for its land locked salmon
(salmo salar sebago), the 14 miles long Traful
river offers unmatched beauty and fishing
conditions. Anecdotes about its famous pools,
which have reached the ears of every fly
fishing fanatic, have been distributed by the
prestigious Arroyo Verde Ranch which lines
the banks of this river, situated inside the
Enchanted Valley.
Although today, brown and rainbow trout
mostly inhabit the river, for many years, the
Traful’s waters where shared by brook trout
and land locked salmon. The land locked
salmon have not disappeared, but it is best to
fish them in March and April, when the
males come down from the lake to spawn.

recuerdan muchas décadas de pesca e historias compartidas en el Traful.

Con algo más de medio siglo sobre las espaldas
y muchos ríos caminados a lo largo y ancho de la Patagonia hoy me dispongo a
contar un hecho que verdaderamente produjo profundos cambios en mi vida de
pescador con mosca.
Mis vivencias desde la época en que con una lata y algunas lombrices, y de
la mano de mis abuelos mientras intentábamos procurarnos la cena o el
almuerzo hasta la realidad actual de los lagos y ríos Patagónicos, me habían
hecho comprender que estabamos ante un recurso frágil y que en algunos
lugares ya casi era inexistente, simplemente las truchas ya no estaban allí ni
en tamaño ni en cantidad como yo de niño las viera.
Esta realidad sin dudas me inquietaba y deseaba contarla. Buscaba caminos
y oídos que quisieran escucharme, y a pesar de lograr abrir algunas puertas y
despertar algunas consciencias nada de ello me dio tan buenos resultados en
la búsqueda de soldados adeptos que ayudaran en el cuidado del recurso de
la pesca deportiva y todo su entorno como el haber conocido a Mel Krieger
y convertirme en un multiplicador de su filosofía de vida como pescador y
predicar su técnica como lanzador de mosca.
Ese fue el gran secreto. Como sucedió, traté de contarlo en un poema que
le dediqué y que titulé el Viejo de la Bolsa uno de mis poemas preferidos,
no por lindo ni bien estructurado, ni tampoco bien rimado, sino porque me
lo dictó el corazón.
Hoy ya más viejo yo y arrullando a mis nietos, debí agiornarlo para ellos y
mientras lo cantó recuerdo al Gran Maestro mi Viejo y querido Mel, a la hora
en que a mi ventana llegan los duendes.
YAYO SAN MARTIN
With half a century’s experience behind me,
and many rivers hiked throughout the length and breadth of Patagonia,
today I feel I can share something that happened which really provoked
profound changes in my life as a fly fisherman.
My experience, which ranges from the time when we would go with a tin
can and some worms to catch lunch or dinner hand in hand with my
grandparents, to the present time and the current reality of Patagonian lakes
and rivers, had led me to realize that we were looking at a fragile resource,
in some places already almost non-existent – in other words, the trout were
just not there in the numbers or sizes they had been when I was a child.
This realization undoubtedly disturbed me, and I wanted to share it, so I
looked for the means, for the ears which would listen to me. In spite of
managing to open some doors and awaken some conscience, nothing
gave me such good results in my search for troopers willing to help me in
the care of our sport fishing resource and its environs as meeting Mel
Krieger, becoming a multiplier of his philosophy of life as a fisherman
and preaching his technique as a fly caster.
That was the big secret. I tried to tell how it happened in a poem, which
I dedicated to Mel, and titled ‘The Old Man with the Bag’. It’s one of my
favorite poems, not because it is nice, well structured, or rhymes, but
because I wrote it with my heart.
Today, Older, and singing lullabies to my grandchildren, I had to revive
it for them. As I sing it I remember that Great Master, my Old and
beloved Mel, at that hour of the day when the elves come to my window.
