01 INTRODUCING MIGHTY MIC
Mighty Mic is an annual Human Rights Awareness Concert organized and executed entirely by UCLA undergraduate
students. Each year, we select a different social justice-related cause as the focal point of our event. The concert features
speakers and video clips designed to educate our audience about the selected issue while they listen to amazing live
music. All proceeds made from ticket sales and donations are given to foundations working on these issues.

In the past we’ve contributed to the Revolutionary Association for Women of Afghanistan (RAWA), STAND, and Doctors
Without Borders. The concert has featured artists including OK Go, Rhymefest, Zion I, Peaches, and Rock & Roll, and
speakers including Adam Sterling (Director of the Sudan Divestment Task Force), John Prendergast (US Government
Advisor on Foreign Policy for Africa and Co-Author of Not on Our Watch with Don Cheadle), Malalai Joya (Afghani
parliamentarian and women’s rights activist), and Sonali Kolhatkar (President of the Afghan Women’s Mission).

Mighty Mic is only in its 3rd year in existence, and already we have put together 2 sold-out concerts, raised over $50,000
for non-profit foundations, and educated more than 10,000 concert attendees about the importance of these ongoing
humanitarian crises and helped facilitate youth-initiated social justice work. This year, we plan on focusing all of our efforts
on those affected by the ongoing struggle for freedom in Burma.

Why Burma? Why Now?

The daily struggle for freedom in Burma (officially named “Myanmar” by the ruling military junta) has been contested for
nearly half a century and has heightened in the last nineteen years, during the tenure of the ruling military junta, the State
Peace and Development Council.

In August of 1988 students, professionals and others marched together, petitioning the regime for reform after the 1987
collapse of the Burmese economy. This peaceful protest, like others before and after it, prompted a violent retaliation
at the hands of the government. Civilians were gunned down in the streets and hundreds of ordinary civilians were
imprisoned or placed under house arrest. This trend of extreme suppression continues today with many opposition
leaders including Nobel Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi still under house arrest. Any sort of dissent is met with brutality
and oppression.

To make matters worse, last spring Burma was hit by a massive cyclone, engulfing a country plagued by a seemingly
unending humanitarian crisis into a natural crisis of epic proportions. The junta initially responded to the crisis by
prohibiting the delivery of foreign aid, fearing that the presence of foreign aid workers would put the regime under “unfair”
scrutiny. Although eventually the regime consented and allowed aid into the country, the delay may have caused scores of
preventable deaths.

Living conditions in Burma continue to worsen. Access to healthcare and education has diminished, human rights are
disregarded, and freedom of speech is nearly nonexistent. The internationally recognized humanitarian crisis in the
country is exacerbated by the regime’s pursuit of ethnic homogeneity which has led to the slaughter and/or displacement
of thousands of ethnic minorities. Many of these individuals are subjected to deplorable conditions in forced labor camps.

In spite of these horrors, and Burma’s status as the 13th poorest nation in the world, Burma receives less international
assistance than any of the other 50 least developed countries, a mere $2.88 per person in contrast to the average of $58
per person.

02 INTRODUCING MIGHTY MIC (cont.)
Burma is a nation crippled by oppressive governance and its citizens need the support of the outside world. For nearly
a quarter of a century this country’s path has been dictated by a callous ruling elite. If the situation is ever to improve, it
will require activism on the part of those who strive for social justice. Mighty Mic—Free Burma is designed to awaken this
drive for action among its participants. Our mission is to educate our community so they are can facilitate positive change.

Why L.A. & UCLA?

Los Angeles is city of tremendous visibility in the world. The city is lively, geared towards entertainment, but is also socially
responsible with many campaigns addressing issues of social justice founded and carried out within the city limits. Access
to information and action surrounds UCLA’s campus; this has helped make it into a hub of progressive movements. This
distinction has helped attract world-renowned figures to speak at UCLA including former President Bill Clinton, former UN
Secretary General Kofi Annan, and more recently, presidential hopefuls General Wesley Clark, Bill Richardson, Dennis
Kucinich, John Edwards, and Hillary Clinton.

UCLA is not only a world leader in fostering progressive movements; it also has a rich history of achieving concrete and
significant successes:

* In 1986, UCLA helped lead the United States’ anti-apartheid movement in by divesting university funds from
companies engaged in commercial activity in South Africa.

* Two years ago, in 2006, UCLA was once again on the vanguard of a campaign for social justice and human rights
when it became the first public university to divest from Sudan to protest the genocide in Darfur. Since then, 21 states, 58
universities, and 10 cities, with assets totaling $1.5 trillion, have all divested their investments from Sudan.

* UCLA students have committed themselves to fighting injustice in Burma as well. Last spring a group of Bruins
traveled to the Thai-Burma border and volunteered in a refugee camp in Mae Sot. After Cyclone Nargis hit students
undergraduate and graduate students worked together to organize a benefit function to send aid money to victims of the
cyclone. UCLA students stand in solidarity with Burmese citizens by attending rallies and political demonstrations in the
greater Los Angeles Area designed to draw attention to the cause of Burma.

With your help, we can continue to create quality programs to spark dialogue on these and other contemporary social and
humanitarian issues.

Benefits: * Local, National and International Exposure * Diverse Group of Organizers and Grass Roots Activists * Huge
Network of Dedicated Nonprofits, NGOs and Partner Organizations * Thought provoking and experimental programming *
Multi-tiered marketing opportunity with a cause * Diverse and educated audience ready to make a difference

03 MIGHTY MIC HISTORY & OVERVIEW
On April 10, 2007, the first annual Mighty Mic Human Rights Awareness Concert took stage to unite education with
entertainment, music with activism, and UCLA students with each other in support of a common cause, social justice.
Originating from the belief of several UCLA students that university students are capable of exerting a real, tangible
influence for good on the world they live in, Mighty Mic grew quickly in to a campus-wide phenomenon. A coalition of more
than 20 student groups united throughout the year to work on this project, and it was a historic success.

2007
In 2007, Mighty Mic highlighted issues of global access to healthcare and as well as Afghan women’s rights, and donated
all proceeds of the sold-out concert to two organizations that have proven to be successful in addressing these matters:
Doctors Without Borders and the Afghan Women’s Mission.

Our first concert exceeded all expectations. Not only did we accomplish our goal of effectively fusing educational
segments with artist performances in an effort to raise awareness on humanitarian issues, we sold out Ackerman Grand
Ballroom which helped to raise over $15,000 for Doctors Without Borders and the Afghan Women’s Mission.

2008
In 2008 Mighty Mic chose to focus on the genocide in Darfur. Our concert was a phenomenal success, we sold out our
venue, and the event was well received both in the UCLA community and in the community of greater Los Angeles as
well.

We sent over $20,000 to Doctors without Borders and STAND, a student anti-genocide coalition dedicated to organizing
nation-wide efforts to pressure our government into action. We also put on a month long series of education programs,
speaking engagements and film screenings to educate students and community members about the genocide in Darfur
and genocides in history as well.

2009
With a history of success, we are going in to this year’s concert, Mighty Mic—Free Burma, confident in our ability to
achieve great things. We see Burma as an ideal focus because the country needs an empowered youth and we are
seeking to bring the same sort of empowerment here, an empowerment that leads to change.

In highlighting the Burmese struggle to UCLA students, as well as members of the neighboring Los Angeles cwe will
use innovative techniques both at the concert and throughout the school year, in other programs. We will build a
comprehensive understanding throughout the year with cutting edge marketing methods, mid-scale cultural and political
programs, and educational workshops.

04 PAST MIGHTY MIC EVENTS

MIGHTY MIC 2007: THE HUMAN RIGHTS AWARENESS CONCERT

The Cause: In 2007, a committed group of students founded Mighty Mic as a student coalition of
multiple student organizations. They decided to highlight womens’ rights issues in Afghanistan
and different issues in health disparity around the world. At the first annual concert organized
by Mighty Mic, students learned about the continuous struggle of Afghan women and the
grassroots solutions of feminist projects as well as the global health disparities that Doctors
Without Borders strives to correct.

The Speakers & Artists: Peaches, The Fall of Troy, Saul Williams, Jello Biafra of the Dead
Kennedys, Mark Gonzales, Raine Maida, Far East Movement, Malalai Joya (the first female
elected to the Afghan Parliament), and Eve Ensler, author of the Vagina Monologues and
founder of the V-day campaign.

Beneficiaries: We raised $5,000, which were sent to Doctors without Borders and the
Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, funding support efforts in health
services and awareness and educational efforts for feminist issues in Afghanistan.

MIGHTY MIC 2008: THE CONCERT TO END GENOCIDE

The Cause: In 2008, Mighty Mic decided to focus on the pervasiveness of genocide as a human
rights issue, focusing upon the current crisis in Darfur. By drawing attention to the pattern of
attacking ethnic identity, Mighty Mic drew the parallels between the genocide in Darfur, Armenia,
Cambodia, the Great Lakes region of Africa, the Holocaust, and Native American genocide.
The UCLA community experienced an exhilarating night filled with musical performances,
documentary clips, speeches by academics and genocide scholars, and testimonials by
survivors of genocide.

The Speakers & Artists: Featured artists included OK Go, Rhymefest, Zion I, Rock and Roll,
Nico Vega, DJ Ana Dim Mak, Arepa, and the Pangea Collective. Featured speakers included
Rabbi Harold Shulweis of Jewish World Watch, Darfur survivor Mohammed Soleiman, Adam
Sterling of the Sudan Divestment Task Force, and John Prendergast, US Government Advisor
on Darfur and co-author of Not on Our Watch with Don Cheadle.

Beneficiaries
We raised $23,000 funds which were sent to Doctors Without Borders and the Student Anti-
Genocide Coalition (STAND), funding support efforts in health services and awareness and
educational efforts for genocide related issues.

05 MIGHTY MIC: THE EVENT, 2009
Mighty Mic 2009, the Free Burma concert will focus upon educating the UCLA community about human rights violations
in Burma through a multimedia showcase of speakers, musicians, video clips, and what has become one of the most
popular parts of the event- a small bazaar at the venue where different non-profit organizations and our donors distribute
promotional material and information.

This year, we will work closely in conjunction with the United States Campaign for Burma, the Burkle Center at UCLA, and
other speakers’ bureaus to bring a diverse array of scholars, refugees, and members of the Burmese community to speak
powerfully on behalf of their movement. For this year’s concert, we have been in serious negotiations with many speakers
and artists and have received exceptionally reduced rates, often less than 50 – 80% of their usual rate. Many of the
speakers scheduled to attend the concert are willing to come from across the country for little more than travel expenses,
in order to educate and empower our student body and raise community awareness. Without sufficient funds to cover
these minimal expenses, however, the program cannot succeed.

07 NON-PROFIT BENEFICIARIES
Who They Are

This year Mighty Mic has chosen to contribute the donations raised through fundraising campaigns and the concert itself
to two well established, successful non-profits: Doctors Without Borders and US Campaign for Burma.

The Nobel Peace Prize winning Doctors Without Borders is an international medical humanitarian organization created
by doctors to provide independent, impartial aid to those most in need. Working in over 60 countries, Doctors Without
Borders is dedicated to being on the front lines of medical relief. It has worked in Burma for over 15 years and is one of
the few international NGOs active in this isolated country.

US Campaign for Burma (USCB) is an American grassroots-based organization dedicated to bring an end to the military
dictatorship in Burma through campaigns of public education and advocacy. USCB has helped turn American attention
towards Burma and in doing so has achieved tangible results including persuading over 100 firms to cut economic
ties with Burma. USCB also worked with the US Congress to pass, almost unanimously, the Burmese Freedom and
Democracy Act; the act prohibits the United States from selling arms to Burma. USCB is an organization with a history
of providing aid to brutalized ethnic minorities, educating the global community about the abuses of the Burmese military
junta and spearheading divestment taskforces. We feel strongly that these non-profits are the appropriate recipients of our
fundraising efforts.
