New Goals and New Beginnings

What great missionaries we have in El Faro! We have just completed interviewing all
181 missionaries in the mission for the first time and left the experience inspired, lifted
up, motivated, thrilled, and more confident than ever that this is a very special mission
with very special missionaries. As I had an opportunity to hear each of your stories,
meet the family and find out a little about your backgrounds, I was left with the
powerful impression that our missionaries are bright, committed, deeply spiritual, bold,
righteous, obedient, and talented. I want you to know how you lift Hermana Dayton and
me up and what a privilege we feel it is to be in the greatest mission on the earths great
face.
We also had our first Concilio Liederazgo Misional and felt the Spirit as we met with
mission leaders and made plans for the coming year. As you all know by now from the
Zone Enfoques, our baptismal goal for the coming year was made after prayerful
consideration. We wanted a goal which was specific, measureable, realistic and
attainable. After much discussion and after presenting to the mission leaders we have
established a goal of 12 baptisms/week for the entire mission every single week for the
next 12 months. This means that we have to be escalator missionaries instead of
elevator missionaries and have a continuous flow of new investigators being prepared
for baptism. With a little math you can quickly figure that if we meet our goal, that
would result in over 600 baptisms for the coming 12 months! A few more calculations
will tell you that that is 1.5 baptisms/zone per week or 6 baptisms per zone per month.
If we do our part that would be 48 baptisms per month for the mission. Every leader in
the mission raised their hands to sustain this goal and all believe it is something we can
do with the Spirit of the Lord and our Fathers guidance and help.
Inevitably, some will raise the question, but President Dayton, why do we talk so much
about the numbers. Cant we just go out and preach the gospel without worrying
about that stuff? It is a fair question and one that deserves a response. Let me share
with you my thoughts about why we measure performance and why we set goals.
President Monson has stated, When performance is measured, performance improves.
When performance is measured and reported, the rate of improvement accelerates. It
is clear that our prophet, a prophet of God, understands and supports the principle of
looking at our performance and setting goals. A wise man once said that, To any ship
which has no destination, any wind blows fair. In other words without goals and
aspirations, our performance wanders all over the place. Goals make us stretch, work
harder, reach a little higher, step outside of our comfort zone; without them we fall to
the level of mediocrity. The Lord surely deserves better than thatHe deserves the very
best that we can give him.

I have a very simple equation that I often use when I hear some question the need for
goals and numbers:
Numbers = Gods children entering the waters of baptism
What this simple equation states is that when we talk about numbers, we arent talking
about something abstract and formulaicwe are talking about PEOPLE, people who are
children of God! They need the blessings of the gospel so desperately, and many dont
have an opportunity to have it only because they know not where to find it.
It is obvious from many accounts in the scriptures that measuring numbers is
something that has been done in every dispensation. Read in Numbers (even the title
of this book suggests this topic is important) 26:4-62 how Moses and Aaron responded
when the Lord himself told them he wanted them to take the sum of the people. In
Chapter 2 of Acts verse 41, an obvious census was taken of the total number of new
Former Day Saints who had responded to Peters admonition to Repent and be
baptized, very one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. The number was 3,000. Similarly, in Mosiah 18
verse 16 we are told, and after this manner he did baptize every one that went forth
to the place of Mormon, and they were in number about two hundred and four souls.
Even the stories about Wilford Woodruff, Dan Jones, and Heber C Kimball and the large
numbers they baptized in the early history of the Church would have never meant as
much had a count not been taken of them.
It is my humble prayer that we will all strive to get an individual testimony of this new
baptism goal for the mission12 baptisms per week for the entire mission. Can
anything be too hard for the Lord? With the Lord on our side this goal is truly
attainable. More than any other thing, what it really means is that we are bringing the
joys of the restored gospel to more of our spirit brothers and spirits. We are helping the
Lords kingdom grow in this part of His vineyard. Therein lies the joy of missionary
work.
Con mucho amor y determinacion,
President Dayton

Attributes of Jesus ChristVirtue Part 2

Last week we focused on Virtue bringing our life in harmony with the holy standards of God.
In The Power for True Success it gives the following list of virtuous character qualities found in Proverbs 31:1031. It also lists the power we receive as we are virtuous. As missionaries we need this power to effectively do
the Lords work of bringing others to Christ.

Descriptions of Virtue

Types of Power

The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her.

He shall have no need of spoil.
She will do him good and not evil all the days of her
life.
She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with
her hands.
She is like the merchants ships; she bringeth her food
from afar.
She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to
her household, and a portion to her maidens.
She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of
her hands she planteth a vineyard.
She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth
her arms.
She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her
candle goeth not out by night.
She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands
hold the distaff.
She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she
reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all
her household are clothed with scarlet.
She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing
is silk and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth
among the elders of the land.
She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth
girdles unto the merchant.
Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall
rejoice in time to come.
She openeth her mouth in wisdom; and in her tongue
is the law of kindness.
She looketh well to the ways of her household, and
eateth not the bread of idleness.
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband
also; and he praiseth her.
Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou
excellest them all.
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman
that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own

Milagros
Well, the miracle this week was
the diligence that Jessica has to
be baptized. She faced a lot of
challenges, from being ill to
having major opposition from her
family, but in the end, we asked
her "would you still like to be
baptized?" And she said that she
know it will be hard, but she
knows that it is the right thing,
the thing that she needed and
that she gained a testimony of
the Book of Mormon and she
couldnt deny that. So she got
baptized, and the following
Sunday, her family came with her
to church for the first time and
they loved it, and know they are
more open to the church and are
now taking the lessons!
The miracle for this week was
Innocent's baptism. It was really
great being able to find, teach,
and help him have the desires to
be baptized. He was a miracle
because he didnt even have it in
his plans to see us again after our
first visit, but the spirit spoke to
him and he continued to meet
with us. I was so happy to see
him be baptized and confirmed
this past weekend.
This week was great. As you
know, Gabriela was baptized!
That was huge for me. It was just
nice to have the work and the
love turn into a good fruit. I dont
think ill ever forget that day.

I just want you to know how

happy I am to be here!!! I love
the mission so much and I
wouldn't rather be anywhere
else. As you know we had 2
beautiful wonderful baptisms this
week. They were both huge
miracles. I don't even know what
more to say. The Lord knows his
sheep. They hear his voice and
they prepare themselves and
come unto him through baptism.
That is what we say this last week
in our baptisms and it was just a
touching miracle.
This week was GREAT! Elder
_________ and I just had a blast
doing missionary work! We were
blessed with 2 great baptisms
and 3 in the District! It truly feels
so good to baptize. I absolutely
love it! It reminds me why I'm
here and gives me even more
energy and desires to work and
to bring more souls unto Him.
There is nothing better in
missionary work than baptizing.
On that same note, I have the
goal to baptize 2 a month the rest
of my mission. It won't be
something easy but I know it's
possible. I'm going to do
everything within my power to be
obedient, diligent, and worthy in
order to see those miracles that I
hope to see. I still have a fourth
left of my mission which is
PLENTY of time to work as an
instrument in the Lords hands to
bring others unto Christ.

The miracles for me this week!

Alex and Luis got baptized in
Barcelona! Alex is the son of
Isabel Rivera we helped reactive
while we were there and his
father let him get baptized! I was
able to pass by there house for 5
minutes while I was in Bar and
give him a huge hug! It was great!
Also our friend Maritza was
baptized. It was the most spiritual
baptism I have been to. The spirit
was felt in the service, and it was
great because there were many
investigators there! Most of them
were Maritza's family and friends.
I could not be more ecstatic.
These baptisms were beautiful.
They will also really help our
district to be able to baptize more
in the future. One baptism always
leads to another.
The biggest miracle we saw this
week was the baptism of Maritza.
We found her about a month ago.
We first found her sister candida
(current investigator). Then
candida introduced us to Maritza,
and a few weeks later, BAPTISM.
There are two things that really
helped her out in her conversion
1. Reading the Book of Mormon.
There was a notable difference in
her once she started reading, and
her progression took off!!!
2.fasting with faith. When she
fasted for an answer about
baptism, she received it. And
then she acted on that answer
and was baptized.

Milagros
WASHINGTON IS GETTING
BAPTIZED ON SATURDAY FOR
SURE! I am so excited!! He has
been taking missionary lessons
for over a year now. I know that
some missionaries are just meant
for certain investigators. He is a
funny guy that is just FILLED with
questions. We got to help him
realize that we can't answer all of
his questions. He has to take it to
the Lord and search. When he
sincerely did this, he became so
ready. Every time I talk to him, he
just says how excited he is! What
an amazing weekend we are
preparing for! I am so thankful
that my companion isn't afraid to
answer all of his questions. He
sure does have a lot. I love
knowing that even when I mess
up in the language or lose
confidence to speak, my
companion is there to help me
through it. She's the best,
Presidente!
Well this weekend was
excelent because we had a
wonderful baptism and
confermation! We have been
working with Andrea for almost 2
months now and finaly she got
baptized. The baptism went
smoothly and the interview was
really quick. She was defenently
prepared by the Lord for us to
teach and prepare for baptism.

Meta del Mes

La meta bautismal de
cada compaerismo!

We had a surprise baptism!

There is a lady that has wanted to
be baptized forever, but now that
her ex doesn't live with her, she
got baptized! Last week flew by
because me and my companion
were both focused on her
baptism, what we still needed to
do, and what she still needed. We
planned the baptism in 4 days,
and about 30 members showed
up for her baptism! She felt very
supported!
Alex was a miracle. We found
him about 5 months ago and
we started teaching him but then
his "mujer" in Ecuador told him
no, he can't meet with us. So we
stopped teaching him but literally
every where we went we would
literally run into him, physically
bumping into him. Then a couple
weeks later he came to us and
said he wanted to start taking the
lessons again! Miracle in and of
itself #1. As the weeks went on
meeting and teaching, we started
to see an amazing change in him.
He was ready for baptism and we
could see it. So we invited him
and he said yes! After a little bit
of confusion, at one point he
decided he wanted to wait a
couple months after vacation. But
we knew what that would do to
him and his desires to keep the
commandments. So we knelt
down in prayer right there in the
middle of the cita and asked if
this is what he needed to do.
After the prayer we just stopped
and we were not afraid of the
silence. He looked at us and said,
"so what time is the baptism?"

We knew at that moment it was

the spirit that touched his heart
and gave him the answer he
needed. So we went through with
the baptism and president, he is a
changed man. He's preparing to
get the priesthood Sunday and he
is truly a special miracle to my
companion and I.
I am alive and I am happy.
This week, we were privileged to
see my first baptism. I know that
numbers don't mean anything,
but it was nice to be able to see a
fruit of my Lahore.
