Students are required to pass before the industrial training
recommended for the award of the Certificate of Bachelor of
Ministry. Students will be placed in a specific organization for a
semester in order to expose them to the real working
environment.

This training is very important because it can provide

guidance to students so that they will be more ready for the
challenges and new experiences and subsequent follow and
adhere to the rules.

For third year students, those taking the Bachelor in Civil

Engineering will undergo industrial training at the sixth semester.
During the 12 weeks, students will be exposed to the real
environment in the workplace. The real aim of this industrial
training is as a basis for a student before entering a real working
environment, as well as build their own individual personalities.

The training provides the space and exposure to each of the

students to gain knowledge in the field of employment.

Knowledge and experience gained from training industry will help

in the future to pursue employment. Also the government and the
private sector to play an important role in the success of the

Department of Valuation and Property Management
Department of Building and Engineering
Legal Department
Administration
Department of the Treasury
Department of City Perancanagan
Department of Parks and Recreation
Department of Health and Licensing
Department of Computer Information danTeknologi

4.0 Introduction of work

During my first arrival at MPJBT,I was first been introduce to
the Head of Civil Engineering Department , Mr Hj Yunos Bin
Wagiran. Because there are five department under the civil

engineering department, therefore Mr Yunos had assist me to

work on three of the department. Since I have three month of
internship period, therefore each month I will have to change my
position on to other department.
The department I am assisted is on the road and traffic
department, drainage department, mechanical and electrical
department.
Road And Traffic Department
During my training at the Road And Traffic Department,
MPJBT, my supervisor Mr Izan Bin Shaharudin Maskan has given
me the task to assist in road projects carried out in the shade
MPJBT. Between work and the tasks I need to do is:

4.1. Learn and understand the work carried out in

the Road and Traffic Division.
On the first day of my report, I have met the Head of
Department of Engineering, Mr. Yunus Bin Hj Wagiran and I was
stationed at Roads and Traffic Division. Here I was assigned the
task to start my training sessions to learn and understand the
work carried out at the Department of Engineering. I was given
some books by my supervisor to make me understand more about
the road works done by MPJBT. The books provided are:
i) Degisn Checklist For Road Projects (ATJ 28/2013)
ii) Guide Sign Design And Application (ATJ 2E/87)
iii)Manual On Traffic Control Devices And Standard Traffic
Sign (ATJ 2A/85)
iv)Manual On Traffic Control Devices, Road Marking &
Delineation (ATJ 2D/85)
v) Buku Panduan Ringkas System Papan Tanda Jalan 2013
(JKR)

4.2. 'Inspection'.

Among the works to be carried out by engineers and technicians

at Roads and Traffic Department is making an inspection of the
project has been given to the contractor. inspection is important
to review the work done by the contractor responsible for whether
the work is done according to the specifications set by the MPJBT
or not. Final inspection were made after the work is totally finished
.The contractor only can claim their money after the works were
approved by MPJBT.
Among the inspection made by MPJBT is :
Guard rail final inspection

Guard rail inspection at jalannusa perintis 1/4

Apart from the inspection work

done for the guard rail. I also have
been brought to the complaints
made by residents of the guard
rail that was damaged and also
the need to install guard rail due
to the frequency of accidents. This
is very important to avoid any
accidents that might involving life.

4.3.Coring Test
The pavement coring process involves the removal of asphalt
and road materials for laboratory testing. Pavement coring is a
necessary process in the analysis of pavement performance. To
select proper designs, guide the mixture selection and avoid the
reuse of damaged materials, pavement coring is essential to the
investigation process. The Infrastructure Management Section
operates a hydraulic truck-mounted pavement core drilling rig as
well as a portal electrical unit. See pictures of the equipment
below.
As one of the requirements set by the JKR to check the road
works have been completed, coring test should be done. The
purpose coring test was carried out is to see whether the
thickness of premix according to the specifications. The sample is
then send to UTM for laboratory test.

Coring is done by the MPJBT

technician

The thickness of the

premix is measured
using Vernier caliper

The thickness of the road

pavement should pass
50mm.

Coring is done for every 100m

Electric Core Drill

With a flexible, multipurpose vacuum/anchor bolt
drilling system this drill is ideal for almost any
wall
or ceiling placement and many
hard-to-reach
applications. Its 1,000
pounds of vacuum force
solidly grips the drilling surface in seconds
4.5 PAVEMENT DESIGN METHODOLOGY
The design procedure used in this Manual is based on traditional
concepts of
pavement design, which
is based on the
assumption that the
following two
strains are critical to
pavement performance;
Vertical strain z on
top of the sub-grade
Horizontal strain t
at the bottom of the
lowest bound
pavement course

In the design process, type and course thickness of paving

materials are
selected to ensure that the above strains remain within an
acceptable range.
Vertical sub-grade strain is adopted as a design criterion to control
accumulation of permanent deformation of the sub-grade. Subgrade deformation (strain) is primarily a function of sub-grade
stiffness and strength, traffic (design load andcumulative traffic
volume over design period), and the thickness and stiffness of the
pavement structure above the sub-grade. Horizontal strain at the
bottom of the bound layer (bituminous or cement treated
material) is used to control fatigue damage due to repeated traffic
loads. Both of these strain values are expressed as a function of
traffic volume. The allowable design strain is that which occurs
under a single pass of an Equivalent Standard Axle Load (ESAL).
Allowable strain values decrease with increasing traffic volume;
strain caused by a single pass of the design wheel load must be
smaller for a pavement designed for high volumes of traffic than
for low traffic volumes

4.6 Determination of Design Traffic

The Equivalent Standard Axle Load (ESAL) used in this Manual is
80 kN, which
corresponds to the standard axle load used in the AASHTO
pavement design
procedure.
Traffic volume is calculated from a known or estimated volume of
commercial
vehicles (CV) and axle load spectrum. Axle loads of passenger
cars are too low
to cause significant pavement distress; therefore, traffic counts
and axle load
spectra used for pavement design are based on the volume and
type of
commercial vehicles. Traffic data that are considered in this
Manual include;

Number of commercial vehicles during Year 1 of Design

Period, which is
the expected year of completion of construction.
Vehicle class and axle load distribution.
Directional and lane distribution factors.
Tyre characteristics and inflation pressure.
Traffic growth factors.
Three types of raw traffic data are typically collected and entered
into a data
base; vehicle counts, vehicle classification, and load data. Based
on current
Malaysian practice of traffic characterisation, two types of data
are available forstructural pavement design;
Traffic volume and percent commercial vehicles from the JKR
national
traffic data base (administered by the Highway Planning Unit
or HPU).
Axle load studies, which provide information about the axle
load
spectrum for selected types of roads and highways in
Malaysia.
Axle load studies provide information about the type of
commercial vehicles and axle loads for a specific road section.
Axle configurations and corresponding load equivalence factors
(LEF) used as basis for this Manual are shown in Table 1.
For pavement design purposes, mixed traffic (axle loads and
axle groups) is converted into the number of ESAL repetitions by
using load factors. The structural design of a pavement is then
based on the total number of ESAL

passes over the design period. Load factors can be determined

from theoretically calculated or experimentally measured truck
and axle loads. Information from axle load studies carried out in
Malaysia and from legal loads in Malaysia(Maximum Permissible
Gross Vehicle and Axle Loads, RTA 1987, Weight Restriction Order
2003) have been used as basis for calculating commercial vehicle
load factors for traffic classes monitored by HPU.

Note: Axle load studies provide the most reliable basis for
calculating ESAL; axle load studies should be carried out and
used whenever feasible.
In the absence of an axle load study, Table 1a below shall be used
as a guide.

The following permissible gross vehicle weights (MGVW) and

maximum axle
loads (MAL) in accordance with List 1 (Peninsular Malaysia) of the
Road
Transport Act, Weight Restrictions Order 2003, were used as basis
for
calculating Vehicle Load Factors (VLF) shown in Table 1.

Axle Loads:
o Maximum Single Axle (4 Wheels): 12 tonnes
o Maximum Tandem Axle: 19 tonnes
o Maximum Tridem Axle: 21 tonnes

Maximum Permissible Gross Vehicle Weights (RIGID Vehicles):

o 2-Axle: 18 tons
o 3-Axle: 26 tons
o 4-Axle: 33 tons
Maximum Permissible Gross Vehicle Weights (ARTICULATED
Vehicles):
o 3-Axle: 30 tons
o 4-Axle: 37 tons
o 5-Axle: 40 tons
o 6-Axle: 44 tons

4.7 Bill of quantity

During my training at the road and traffic department, my
supervisor also assist me to learn and make a bill of quantity
(BOQ)
The objectives of the Bill of Quantities are:
(1) to provide sufficient information on the quantities of Works to
be performed to enable bids to be prepared efficiently and
accurately; and when a contract has been entered into.
(2) to provide a priced Bill of Quantities for use in the periodic
valuation of works executed.
In order to attain these objectives, works are itemized in the Bill of
Quantities in sufficient detail to distinguish between the different
classes of works, or between works of the same nature carried out
in different locations or in other circumstances which may give
rise to different considerations of cost. Consistent with these
requirements, the layout and content of the Bill of Quantities are
required to be as simple and brief as possible.

4.9. Quarry visit

On Thursday 6/19/2014 , the Engineering Department has been

invited by PARAMOUNT Premix Sdn. BHD to visit their quarry in
Jalan Air Hitam in Kulai. The objective of this visit was made to
introduce the premix product that is processed by the company
PARAMOUNT Premix Sdn. BHD to MPJBT. We were given a little
introduction about the premix product in this process at the
quarry. We also brought to see the whole process of preparing a
premix processed automatically.

PARAMOUNT Premix SDN BHD batching plant

The manufacture of coated roadstone demands the

combination of a number of aggregates, sand and a filler (such as
stone dust), in the correct proportions, heated, and finally coated
with a binder, usually bitumen based or, in some cases,
tar, although tar was removed from BS4987 in 2001 and is not
referred to in BSEN 13108/1 . The temperature of the finished
product must be sufficient to be workable after transport to the
final destination. A temperature in the range of 100 - 200 degrees
Celsius is normal.

Increasingly, recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) is used as part

of the mix. The binder used is flammable, and the heaters are
large liquid or gas fired burners. RAP is introduced after the
heating process and must be accounted for in the overall mix
temperature calculations.

There are three main classes of plant: batch heater, semicontinuous (or "asphalt plant"), and continuous (or "drum mix").
The batch heater has the lowest throughput, the continuous plant
the highest at up to around 500 Tonnes per hour.

Supply of roadstone for large contracts is generally by tender

with considerable pressure on price. A faulty batch of roadstone
must be planed up and relaid, often with additional lane rental
charges, at a cost which may be orders of magnitude higher than
the original price, so sophisticated control systems are a necessity.

4.11 OTHER WORKS ATTENDED

Apart from the work on other works involving road project, I was
also given the task to assist my supervisor in the work done by
the technician and road MPJBT officer .This work is also good for
me to gain more knowledge related to engineering work.
Among the works that my supervisor assist me to help and to do
is:
1. Drawing Practice : Draw using autocad ,the road work plan
for road widening project

2. Road Sign and Guide sign design for Taman Pulai Indah : I
was given a task to study and propose a road and guide sign
for Taman Pulai Indah. The design must follow the
requirement satisfied by JKR specification
3. Meeting : every month of my training period, I have to do a
presentation to report about the works done at that one
month period
4. Tender Meeting : I was also been exposed to the meeting
held by MPJBT on the Tender Works
All of the work given have been successfully done before the end
of the training period.

CONCLUSION
After I have been here to complete my industrial training,
personally I can say that theoreticals and practically are two
different scenario. I can design and calculated the exact values
that are to be used, but practically the condition usually does not
coincide 100%.
Needless to say, for this whole training period, I had gain so
much knowledge which I had not expected earlier. All the activities
that I carried out on site help me to apply and proves the entire
knowledge which I had learnt while in lecturing. It shows that not
all theory can be practice on site. They are certain constraints that
preventing some theories are not applicable and this is where the
engineers come into action to make the decisions.
With the friendly cooperation by all the members in the firm,
I am able to carried out my practical training smoothly. I had been
granted the permission to enter at any single point on site. Thus,
throghout my training, I am lucky because I am able to see
different types of concurrent activities that was done.
It was a great time for me gaining a lot of experience and
spend my practical training in this company. I also improved my
leadership, communication and management skills. I also become
more confident and more open minded in making decesion. I think
involving in this project was a great oppurtinities to gain
experience and contribute before developing my future carrier.

Last but not least, heartily hoping with this training, I am

ready to face the real world after my graduation in UTM provided
having the right attitude and always eager to learn all knowledges
and skills which can be obtain in real work situations later.
