A trail of kids

By Jessica Howard

Squeals of delight echoed throughout Ballan on Friday as

over 900 children took part in the annual Literacy Trail.
In its ninth year, the award-winning event celebrated literacy
in all its guises from storytelling to reading, writing and
counting.
Commencing at 10am, children from 20 Moorabool primary
schools, kindergartens and childcare centres marched down
the main street, where they were entertained by stilt walkers,
jugglers, dancing dogs and storytellers.

Along the way, a reading passport allowed the children

to collect autographs and stamps from costumed book
characters such as Snow White, Batman, Madeline and the
Queen of Hearts.
Bungaree, Ballan, Bacchus Marsh and St Brigids Primary
Schools decorated large foam letters spelling R-E-A-D,
which were placed at the Ballan rotunda.
Moorabool Shire Council Mayor, Paul Tatchell, who donned
a Mad Hatter outfit for the day, said the event was a unique
and fun way of helping to educate and inspire children.

Its an event where everyone plays a part. It would be fair to
say, the streets really do come alive.
The Literacy Trail, which alternates between the main
streets of Bacchus Marsh and Ballan each year, is brought
to the streets of Moorabool by the State Governments
and Moorabool Shire Councils Best Start Program a

Aged brickworks
may have new life

Open
8am-6pm

with an aged care facility. Photo Lisa Comerford

By Kate Taylor

A proposal for a new aged

care facility in Darley will go
before the Moorabool Shire
Council next month.
If approved, the development to be built in place of
the old brickworks located
at 58 Grey Street in Darley
will include the construction
of a single storey aged care
facility and multi-lot residential subdivision.
The aged care facility is
proposed to be located on
the eastern portion of the
site, with the provision of
144 beds with communal
dining, lounge and library
areas.
The proposal also includes
a communal open space consisting of seven courtyards
and will be constructed
from brick with a tiled roof
to integrate with surrounding buildings.
The applicant is development and environment consultants, Beveridge Williams
& Co, who lodged the planning permit in May.

Idiots fell living trees

Environmental vandals have chopped

down five native trees at the Dollys
Creek campsite near Elaine.
It appears though that one of the trees
proved too much for the vandals it
was left standing having been cut about
one-fifth of the way through, and had
the name Tom carved into it with a
chainsaw.
At least one River Redgum was among

the trees felled, with some falling into

the Moorabool River.
People for A Living Moorabool
spokesperson Cameron Steele said it
was an act of stupidity.
It was very disappointing to see
one of the nicer camp areas along the
Moorabool treated in that way, Mr
Steele said.
Theres no excuse - even during the
firewood collection period you werent

allowed to chop down standing living

trees, and youre still not allowed to
remove timber from these areas, you
can use wood at the campsite but you
cant destroy native vegetation.
Mr Steele said that the Department
of Environment is meeting PALM
members at the site to inspect the
damage.
We ask of anybody who sees people
engaging in this kind of act - report
them, Mr Steele said.

Plain old fun is a sport!

By Lisa Comerford
It is official, making and flying
paper planes is a sport.
As part of National Science Week
two paper plane pilots visited
Bacchus Marsh PS who still cant
believe they get to make paper
planes for a living.
Dylan Parker and James Norton
represented Australia in the Paper
Planes World Championships, a
sport that was the inspiration for the
box office hit movie Paper Planes.
Can you believe all this fun is our
job? Dylan said as excited students
creations whizzed past his head.
Dylan who worked in Marketing
and James a Landscape Architect,
recently quit their day jobs to follow
their dreams of travelling the
country, (using the simple concept
of paper planes), to educate and
motivate students in schools and
universities.
The pair met at a paper plane
competition in 2008 and travelled
together to the World Championships
in Austria where Dylan scored a
3rd world ranking with a throw of
42 metres. James qualified 1st but
crashed out when his plane hit the
ceiling.
The experience proved to us that
if you pursue your interests and
passions, you can make a career out
of just about anything, Dylan said.
Every paper plane is unique, a
particular fold or angle can change
the way and direction it flies. Its
a beautiful metaphor for life, and
how decisions we make ultimately
determine our path.

re-zoning

Plans to redevelop Darley Plaza will soon be

out for public comment.
Councillors resolved at the September
council meeting to put the lengthy list of
proposed permit conditions along with
proposed rezoning of land on exhibition.
The matter originally went before the
November council meeting last year when
councillors requested that the rezoning
application be separated from the planning
permit application, however the developer
stated that they could not progress with one
aspect if the other was undecided, and the
both are now combined.
The proposal is for the currently vacant
8 Jonathan Drive to be re-zoned from
residential to commercial and the existing
shopping centre at 151 Gisborne Road to be
extended.
A 22-space carpark and crossover would be
built on the Jonathan Drive site, as well as
expanding the centre by 467sqm in floor area
which would include an extension to the
existing supermarket of 301.59sqm in area,
an additional retail tenancy of 110.98sqm and
expansion of the common arcade area.
Four disabled car parks would be provided
along with two pram car parks.
The list of 25 permit conditions includes
strict governance of landscaping, provision
of engineering and drainage plans, and a
turning template for heavy vehicles must be
provided.

Plans to increase
heritage and
eco-tourism
By Kate Taylor

Moorabools Heritage Advisory Committee

has finalised a response to last years Parliamentary Inquiry into Heritage tourism and
Ecotourism in Victoria.
Council last year requested that the MHAC
provide an implementation plan response to
the Inquiry, which provided guidelines on
how councils can best market the heritage
and environment values of Moorabool.
Places such as the Lerderderg Gorge, Werribee Gorge, Lal Lal Falls and the Bacchus
Marsh Avenue of Honour were noted as
popular places within Moorabool.
A report prepared by council officers recommended that councillors thank the MHAC
for its work in providing the response to the
Inquiry.
However it noted that it was a difficult task
to undertake with no funds.
During the 2014/15 financial year MHAC
had no operating budget, the report read.
Advice was provided to Council in accordance with their brief however no concept development could be undertaken without the
required resource.
The recommendations in the MHACs plan
will be distributed internally within council to ensure that existing opportunities to
increase heritage tourism and ecotourism
within Moorabool are used.

Family pet mauled

on our streets

By Jessica Howard

A Darley family has been

left distraught after their
three-year-old dog was victim to a fatal attack.
Kirstie, the mother of two
young girls aged nine and
14, said her daughters decided to take their two family pets for a walk on Sunday
(August 30), when a large, vicious dog approached them.
They went around the corner from our house to Davies
Street in Darley and this big
dog came flying over and attacked our little dog Nelly,
Kirstie said.
Apparently some kids
came and were calling
the big dog by name, they
grabbed it and told my
kids to get out of there really quickly so the girls just
picked Nelly up and ran her
home. She was in a bad way
so I rang the vet but it was
too late, she passed away
shortly after.
Kirstie said although she
didnt want to make assumptions, it wasnt the first time
they had been approached
by a random dog.
I understand that it was
an accident, sometimes dogs
get out, but we have had that
many incidents in Bacchus
Marsh where a dog with

Lara Heagney Lara Johnson Zoe Skinner. Photo Lisa Comerford

no apparent owner has approached us and this dog

was obviously vicious, she
said.
My daughter said the dog
picked up our little one in his
mouth and just shook her.
The girls are just absolutely
traumatised, especially the
young one as she was the
one holding our little dog.
Following the incident,
Kirstie said she contacted
the council however had
very limited information on
the attacker.
We dont know the breed
of the dog or where it came

from so not much can be

done, I was sick at the time
so I am really regretting not
being there with my daughters, but people need to start
being more aware, she said.
Animals need to be contained because this really
should not have happened.
My 9-year-old daughter has
since told me that she would
never go for a walk again because she is too scared, the
whole ordeal is really awful
and obviously our little dog
really suffered.
Nelly was a three-year-old
Pomeranian x Chihuahua.

so thats unavailable due

to construction works, Cr
Spain said.
And another wing is being
redeveloped into changerooms for the oval at the
Hub.
Five expressions of interest
to rent space at the Hub were
received - from the Country
Womens Association, Apple
FM, Bacchus Marsh College,
Federation University and
the Department of Justice.
A report prepared by council officers recommended
that the Department of Justice application be approved
as it fills a service gap within
the community however
consideration of all four
other expressions of interest
will be deferred until more
space becomes available.
Cr Spain said the CFA is
currently paying rent at the
Hub, and that the Department of Justice will be paying commercial rates.
A lot depends on when a
new home can be developed
for the CFA,
The idea of letting the Bacchus Marsh Supper Room
out to groups was raised,
with Cr Spain acting as the

Temporary
Chairperson
of the Halls Committee of
Management.
Im thinking the committee could certainly have a
think about it, and if that is
going to be for two years, say,
its a concept for discussion;
by no means is it a serious
prospect at the moment.
Cr Spain added that renting spaces is a fairly new
idea to Bacchus Marsh, and
that council officers are now
looking into issues around
accommodating community
groups as well as whether
rental income should go into
general revenue or be a line
item, or should be put aside
to be spent on community
infrastructure.
The Department of Justice
will use its room to deliver
services including consumer
information and advice
through Consumer Affairs
Victoria; dispute settlement/
mediation
through
the
Dispute Settlement Centre
Victoria; Births Deaths and
Marriages; Sheriffs; and

conducting their own experiments.

findings to other students, with the theme

for 2015 being Flight.
A paper plane workshop was held and also

Limited space to
rent at hub

By Kate Taylor

When it comes to community groups looking for a

home, theres no room at the
Inn or the Hub, as the case
may be.
Council has more people
wanting to rent rooms at the
Darley Civic and Community Hub than it can provide
for, according to East Ward
Councillor John Spain, who
said the problem is extending throughout Bacchus
Marsh.
An Expressions Of Interest
for renting space at the Hub
was held by council in February this year, however the
majority of space at the Hub
is currently occupied by
the CFA that was forced to
relocate when the Fiskville
Training College at Ballan
was closed in March this
year.
Cr Spain explained that the
CFA has an 18-month lease
with an option to extend by
six months but there are
also other reasons why space
at the Hub is limited.

Howzat for new equipment!

By Steven Barnes (Work
Exp 2nd Yr Monash Uni)
The two sporting clubs
play with near the same size
balls, but the cricket and tennis clubs at Elaine had more
exciting news to share with
their members.
The club held a joint Open
Day at the reserve with
a special guest being
unveiled.
A new bowling machine
was the main attraction and
members, young and old,
lined up to test their batting
skills.
Cricket Club President
Murray Arnel said with the
help of a Moorabool Shire
grant the club purchased the
equipment to improve junior
and senior members skills.
Its the best thing that has
come to Elaine since the railway line! Mr Arnel said.
Our senior and most expe-

rienced players say they can

already notice the difference
particularly in our younger
players, in how they address
and strike the ball in just a
few short minutes.
Mr Arnel said the future of
the cricket club is looking
very bright since reforming
in 2011.
Our junior team won the
U13 grade BCA premiership
and will this year be elevated to compete in the Under
14s competition, while at
senior level the Club is looking forward to competing at
the highest level in the BCA
restructure competition in
the one-day tournament.
Local businesses, Cricket
Victoria and Moorabool
Shire Council have all supported the growth of the
club that have enabled us
to upgrade our training and
playing facilities and purchase new equipment and
uniforms, Mr Arnel said.

Elaine Cricket Club purchased a new bowling machine with funds

sourced from a Moorabool Shire Winter Grant and Meridian

Aged and Disability Services

Improved Livability for Older People

During 2011-2014, the Victorian Government through the Municipal Association

of Victoria provided funds to selected councils to create more age-friendly
communities. This bottom up approach was the basis for the Improving Livability
for Older People (ILOP) in small towns project.
Over this period, funded organisations were able to plan and
deliver a wide range of projects that have made a positive
difference to the quality of life, social participation, health,
wellbeing and connectedness of older people in their respective
communities. ILOP created many positive and sustainable agefriendly projects across regional and rural Victoria. Councils and
local agencies have increased capacity and understanding of
the needs of older people, and are therefore better placed to respond to their
ageing populations. Importantly, older people report feeling a stronger sense
of worth and belonging in the place they live. There is no doubt that ILOP has
transformed lives and communities for the better. Some of the projects are ideas
are listed below and these coincide with programs the Aged and Disability Unit
have been drafting.
Providing town maps to enhance mobility and safety for older people.
- Rural Access and Aged and Disability Services are developing the Moorabool
Mobility Map to assist people living with a disability and older people better
access.
Introducing scooter recharge points to increase mobility and encourage
participation in community life.
- Rural Access and Aged and Disability Services unit have signed up and will be
highlighting the recharge points on the Moorabool Mobility Map.
Creating a local arts program to reduce isolation, encouraging new social
interactions and providing new creative experiences for older people,
Installing new seating to increase accessibility for older people to attend events
and activities or just make the local streets and shops easier to use.
- Aged and Disability Services will advocate adding shelters to bus stops so
older people can take settler from the weather.
Developing tness programs.
- Djerriwarrh Health Services has a number of exercise programs running out
of the Andy Arnold Hall [Senior Citizens and Quamby Rooms], together we
will be working towards more healthy, active ageing programs involving
Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Dietitians.
- We will be developing Men as Carers programs to assist those men who,
for whatever reason, are now the carers; cooking classes, what to do with
leftovers, healthy food options and how to buy clothing for the person they
care for. [under clothing, personal care items and the like].
Developing a Community Based Active Ageing Programs
- We ask locals what services they need now and in the future.
- Run programs that engage and address isolation issues.
Encouraging young people to teach older people skills in using technology to
create intergenerational connections and friendships
- Youth services and Aged and Disability Services are also looking into older
people teaching younger people how to better manage cooking, bills
management in exchange for mentoring older people in technology skills
training.
We believe that these opportunities for older people will increase their ability to
participate socially, in community life and community programs which help to
improve their physical and mental health.

Small gesture, big reward

By Jessica Howard
Judy DAttoma knows how much
a free coffee or hot meal can help
someone in need.
Which is why the Bacchus Marsh
mother of four has taken time out
of her busy schedule to promote
the pay it forward method.
The century-old Italian tradition
allows for people to purchase a cup
of coffee or hot meal in advance for
those less fortunate.
Judy said she stumbled across the
idea on social media and thought
she would attempt to get it started
in the area.
I noticed that cafes and restaurants were taking part in the tradition overseas and I thought what
a beautiful idea, so I posted something about it on the Facebook page
(Bacchus Marsh Residents) and
everyone was really supportive,
she said.
How it works is you can go in to
participating businesses and purchase a cup of coffee, or a sandwich
or some hot soup, and someone
who cant afford their own can
come in later and its already paid
for them.
Judy said after suggesting the idea
to residents online and receiving a

the Pay it Forward project. Photo Helen Tatchell
lot of enthusiasm, she decided to
then approach local businesses.
I have developed a relationship
with quite a few caf owners in
Bacchus Marsh and when I approached them they were all really

responsive, she said.

Judy said she would also like to
see the pay it forward scheme expand to as many other services as
possible.
Ive had a lady offer to use the

scheme in her pet grooming business, she said she knew a lot of elderly people whose pets are their
only companion who struggled
to afford to look after their pets
and this is a great way to help them

with that, she said.

I would love to see Bacchus Marsh
become the first town in history to
have the majority of their privately
owned businesses involved in the
pay it forward method. I know its
a bit of a pie in the sky, but I dont
see why its unachievable. Its going
to take a lot of time and work but I
would really love to put our town
on the map and say this is a town
that really supports each and every
member of the community.
Local businesses participating in
the pay it forward scheme include
the Darley General Store, Corna
Caf, Micky Bzs, Darley Bakehouse, One69 Main Street, Loot
Caf, Angelos Bakery, Jimmys
Fish and Chip Shop and Home
Sweet Home Pet Grooming.
Ballans Thrifty Minx has also
been involved in the pay it forward
scheme, offering pre-paid bowls of
soup since earlier this year.
Those eligible for the pay-it-forward method can claim their purchases with a coupon, which will
be distributed at a later date.

Thieves steal historical trees

By Jessica Howard

Trees representing Coimadai war volunteers have

been stolen just two months
after the official opening of
the towns memorial park.
The Bacchus Marsh police
are investigating the incident after they received a
report on September 1 of at
least 10 stolen trees and 20
stakes totalling $550.
Senior Constable Nick
Wallace said there were no
current leads into the theft,
however they were hoping for someone to come
forward.
Unfortunately there were

no witnesses at all at the

time, however it really is just
a despicable act, he said.
The local community, including a lot of volunteers,
put a lot of their own time
and hard work into planting
those trees and putting up a
memorial for the lives lost in
the First World War.
Coimadai Avenue of Honour Restoration Association
work supervisor, George
Rogers described the theft as
a blasted shame.
A whole lot of effort went
into getting the avenue to
this stage and it is a total
disrespect to the people who
served in the war, he said.

Those diggers fought for

our liberty and served to
give us the standard of living that we have today. This
district supplied 132 volunteers out of a population of
around 400, and 32 of them
were killed in action I just
cant believe it.
Mr Rogers said by removing
the trees the callous thieves
were removing a long family
history.
This was such a wonderful
project which had so many
positive side effects. We had
people in the district that
didnt know the war history of their grandparents or
great grandparents up until

now, he said.
At the official opening we
had five direct descendants,
which were in my fathers
generation and it was such
a stirring situation to see
people finding out their own
family history, however a
part of that has now been
lost.
Mr Rogers said even if
the association were lucky
enough to find the money to
replace the trees, they would
be unable to be replanted for
another 12-months.
Anyone with any information is urged to contact the
Bacchus Marsh Police on
5366 4500.

Story-telling through art

By Jessica Howard

Winners of the 2015 Victorian Indigenous

Art Awards have been announced, with five
successful artists taking home more than
$50,000 in prize money.
Presented by the Art Gallery of Ballarat on
August 8, the awards saw 35 artists from
around Victoria vie for six awards, including the states wealthiest indigenous art
prize, the $30,000 Deadly Art Award.
A life-size woven sculptural work was the
winner of the prestigious honour, which
included three woven cloaks created by former Swan Hill artist, Glenda Nicholls.
Made from jute string and possum skin, the
cloaks represented indigenous women and
the role they play in welcome to country
ceremonies.
Local Gordon artist and finalist, Marlene
Gilson also presented her work titled Bunjils Final Meeting Place, Race Meeting at Lal
Lal, which depicted the sacred grounds of
Lal Lal Falls.
Using acrylic paints on linen, Ms Gilson
spent five months painting a total of 346
people.
I actually started it in about March but
some days I had been working on it from
10am to 2am. It took me a long time but I
kept going and going and going, she said.
Now in her third year as a finalist, Ms Gilson said the purpose of the awards were to
raise the profile of Indigenous and Torres
Strait Islander artists.

Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. Photo Helen Tatchell

The 10th annual awards welcomed guest

judges Vicki Couzens, who won the very
first Deadly Art Award and Caroline Martin, the manager of Bunjilaka Aboriginal
Culture Centre at Museum Victoria.
Also in attendance was Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley, who said the
awards showcased the incredible vibrancy
of South Eastern Aboriginal art.
This years finalists offer an incredible
demonstration of the breadth of ideas and

practises that characterise our Indigenous

arts sector, he said.

patients health. The government has failed

to consider the consequences, Prof. Owler
said.He said that for a long time, the Medicare rebate was indexed in such a way that
it failed to keep pace with the rises in the
costs of providing services and the value of
services.
The rebates were indexed an extra two per
cent last year, however the government then
decided to freeze further indexation until
2018 meaning the rebate will not rise in
line with increased costs and values.
As wages and other practice costs rise

and we expect more from general practice

the costs of providing services will be
passed on directly to patients. There will
be an increased burden on those patients as
there will be a growing out-of-pocket cost to
accessing quality healthcare.
He called on the government to change the
policy before next years anticipated federal
election.
The freeze to indexation is a direct attack
on general practice. This is not AMA rhetoric. It is what GPs all over the country are
saying to the AMA and to their patients.

These awards have played a significant

role in the visual arts by providing a platform for artists to take the next step in their
careers, gain recognition and break into
new markets.
The Victorian Indigenous Art Awards were
presented and are on display at the Ballarat
Fine Art Gallery.

The President of the Australian Medical

Federal Government to end its freeze on
Medicare patient rebates.
Professor Brian Owler explained that it is

Get aboard the Scholar-ship

By Jessica Howard

Shiver your timbers and buckle your swash because the Myrniong Primary School pirate ship is officially open.
The Scholar-Ship, which was named by a family from the
school and built by local carpenter Scott Fisher, boasts two giant
masts and sails and is worth over $10,000 in just materials.
Mr Fisher said he originally thought of building a tall ship until
the students came up with the idea of a pirate ship instead.
The father of three said the future plan was to change the flag
to the national flag on Australia Day, with the hope of receiving
some funding in order to change the sails to white shade cloth to
represent a tall ship from the first fleet.
Mayor Paul Tatchell congratulated the school and the community, firstly for being successful with a council grant application
and secondly on producing a great structure for their students.
This is another example of a true community coming together
and partnering with the school to create this brilliant asset, he
said.
It is communities like this one at Myrniong that make Moorabool a great place to live, work and invest.
The official unveiling, which was held on campus on Tuesday
(September 1), saw the whole school dress from head to toe in
pirate costumes and was led by teacher First Mate Crilly and
Captain Principal Peach.
Jokes came thick and fast, with one student being asked where
he was born.
In Arrrgentina, he replied.
The opening of the Scholar-Ship, which was funded by a $3,000
Moorabool Shire Council grant and school fundraising activities, coincided with Literacy and Numeracy Week throughout
the state of Victoria.

Opportunity

healthy

By Jessica Howard

Local environment groups

may be eligible for up to
$30,000 thanks to an imminent community grants
program.
The Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (PPWCMA)
will be offering the grants
program to volunteer, community or not-for-profit
groups such as Landcare,
Friends-of,
Committees
of Management and other
environmental groups that
benefit the health of the
regions land, water and
biodiversity.
A total of $250,000 is on offer thanks to the regional delivery stream of the Australian Governments National
Landcare programme and
funds from the State Governments Victorian Landcare Grants.
In its fifth year, the community grants program targets
activities such as improving
soil condition and resilience,
protecting or enhancing native vegetation, managing
threats posed by pest plants
and animals or community
education.
Over its duration, the pro-

gram has provided funding

to a number of local Landcare groups such as Moorabool, Greendale, Parwan,
Rowsley, Pentland Hills and
Blackwood.
The Moorabool Landcare
Network has received a total
of $20,900 in funding over a
three-year period, which includes a $1000 network start
up grant in 2012, followed by
over $19,000 for stage one of
the Lower Parwan Creek Biolink the following year.
PPWCMA CEO, David Buntine said he was proud to
support the many Landcare
and other community-based
groups that develop and deliver great local projects.
The volunteers in these
groups do amazing work
year after year to help their
local communities and the
broader environment. They
deserve all the help we can
give and these community
grants are one way of supporting their wonderful
work, he said.
Those interested in applying can view the criteria and
application forms on www.

Moorabool
awash with
heritage

By Kate Taylor

Moorabool Shire Council is making a submission

in response to the current state government
review of the Heritage Act.

The submission sets out councils support for the

proposed changes to the Act, however it criticizes
missed opportunities which come from the Act
being reviewed in isolation.

Boxings Master Blaster

Its not everyday you have the
chance to spar with a five-time
world boxing champion.
However, members of Bacchus
Marsh
Lights
Out
Boxing
and Fitness welcomed former
Australian boxer Lester Ellis to
the ring last month.
Owner and boxing coach, Nathan
Doughney said Mr Ellis brought
members of his own boxing
academy in order to provide some
interclub sparring.
After everyone warmed up and
went through some combinations
together, we matched ages and
weight of all the boys and then we

did a bit of training together, he

said.
It was a great way to learn how
other people go about boxing.
Both of our gyms have an event
in October and we have three
guys who are competing in their
first fight, when you go in the ring
against someone youve never met
you need to think on your toes
and so this was a way to gain a
bit of confidence and learn new
tricks.
Mr Doughney said around 30
boxers aged between 12 and 45
attended the Bacchus Marsh
gymnasium - something which
he hoped to make a regular
occurrence.

The urgent need to limit global warming

As you might be aware the

insightful Canadian writer
Naomi Klein, whose most
recent book This Changes
Everything (Allen Lane
Australia 2014), I have mentioned many times recently,
is in Australia. Most of my
friends seem to either have
this book or are reading
someone elses. In her appearance on a recent Q&A
she spoke eloquently and
forcefully on our need to look
at capitalism and change it
or it will ruin our planet. As
there was no tweet or hard
question from the audience,
during the program, the current leader of our nation was
not outraged.
I thought, as Naomi was
here in Australia and speaking at a number of venues, I

All the detractors of Sarah
Laurie, while knowing full
well that she was fighting for
recognition of a worldwide
health problem, did absolutely nothing to support or
assist her, instead, under the
tutelage of Professor Chapman and his band of merry
wind farm proponents,
promoted the idea that the
symptoms suffered by so
many were as a result of a
nocebo effect.
The saddest part of the
wind farm saga is that, with
proper community consultation, sensible planning and
placement of turbines where
they would not cause problems to humans, all of the
controversy
surrounding
this form of renewable energy could have been avoided.
Greed and vested interests
have overtaken common
sense and a duty of care.
In all my years of working
with health professionals, I
have never met anyone with
more integrity and empathy
for those in need of help. I
am aware that Sarah Laurie, for personal reasons, is
not registered to practise at
present. I hope that she will
return in the not too distant
future as someone as valua-

Dear Editor,
Recently much has been
discussed about the plan for
a Bunnings Store and what
this could mean for Bacchus
Marsh. I live in Clifton Drive
and a Bunnings at the end of
our road is unthinkable for
various reasons, mostly the
effect on traffic. It is a work
of art to get out of Clifton
Drive now and into town let
alone with what is proposed.
A roundabout joining Clifton Drive and Leila Court so
close to the traffic lights at
the Freeway overpass would
be lunacy! Who came up
with that idea?
In this weeks Moorabool News (1 Sept), a letter
submitted by Jenny Arrowsmith, touches on the
overall problem we have in
this town. Bacchus Marsh
has grown significantly but
traffic infrastructure is still
in the dark ages. We have
gigantic quarry, logging
and livestock trucks passing
through the centre of our
town. Apart from the traffic snarls they cause, there

is also the safety angle that

should be considered. Luckily so far no major accident
has happened but anyone
watching this traffic worries.
Traffic, morning and afternoon, trying to enter or leave
the town is subjected to high
stress levels as EVERY vehicle struggles to get along
Gisborne Road. I have seen
the length of Gisborne Road
at a standstill between the
Darley roundabout and the
Freeway most mornings and
many cars use Beresford
Crescent or the service road
as an alternative. Unfortunately, in the afternoons,
such an alternative does not
exist.
Meanwhile, new housing
estates keep being opened.
Traffic in this town is chaotic, highly stressful and
unacceptable and should not
be covered up by the issue of
whether to have/not have a
Bunnings store.
It is high time that VicRoads
and Moorabool Shire sort
our traffic out. It is of paramount importance to all
Bacchus Marsh residents,
whether they live north or
south of the freeway.

Dear Editor,
As a retired member of the
board of Ballan Health and
Care after 25 years service,
I feel compelled to try and
get things into perspective
given the current criticism
it is presently getting as
sentiments and emotions do
not pay the bills. As a community owned not for profit
establishment it is damned
if it does, and is damned if it
doesnt (make a profit) to stay
in business and sometimes a
Board of management has to
make unpopular decisions.
Instead of throwing stones
I would have thought we
should be grateful to have
such a wonderful health
care community asset. After
all, our health is our wealth,
and I for one am proud to
have been associated with
this vital and essential
organisation.
Keep up the good work.

Dear Editor,
I was searching my files
today and stopped at this I
wrote many years ago..
The term, In my day is
detested by our young people.

Life today is a speeding train,

stopping at stations unheard of
by the In my day-ers; many refuse to get on let alone read the
destination.
Back in the 50s there were so
many jobs for people they would
pick and choose, give a weeks
notice if they did not like it,
breeze into the next.
Migrant ships were unloading
thousands of people ravished
by war. We welcomed them
with open arms and called them
New Australians who not only
brought with them wonderful
new cuisine but went on to help
mould our Australia today.
Some years later open arms
also welcomed technology TV,
Internet, E-mail, mobile phones
and the like communication in seconds and our brave
new world began; and so did
unemployment.
But now today we have
the war of the worlds on
our hands. What is all the
bombing about? Im sure the
morons doing it have no intention to make a brave new
world for anyone. I just dont
understand it.

Dear Editor,
At last the champion and
avowed advocate of the
wind industry, sociologist
Professor Simon Chapman
from Sydney University
has been forced to sincerely
apologise to Dr Sarah Laurie. Over the last five years
the Professor has denigrated
her very valuable work, in
which she has worked tirelessly to encourage independent research into the
many adverse health effects
including particularly sleep
disturbance, suffered by
people forced to live in close
proximity to wind turbines.
The apology was necessary because he implied in a
tweet as follows :
Ms Laurie had given cause
to the Medical Board of Australia to deregister her as a
medical practitioner, on account of unprofessional conduct: that she is not entitled
to use the title Dr; and that
she does so in contravention of the laws that govern the conduct of medical
practitioners.
These allegations were implied without foundation
and are entirely false.
Ms Laurie is not deregistered and has never been
sanctioned by the Medical

CEO, REIV
With the lowest interest
rates in 50 years, more Australians are looking to invest
in the property market. For
those considering investing,
the ideal property combines
a low purchase price and a
high weekly rental, delivering a high yield to investors.
Knowing the gross yield that is, a propertys annual
rental as a percentage of the
purchase price is important for financial planning
and can help you choose
and compare investment
properties.
So, for example, a property
costing $300,000 and renting
for $9,000 a year would have
a gross rental yield of 3 per
cent. Generally, the higher
the rental yield, the more
attractive the property is to
investors.
The REIV produces the
median yield, expressed
as a percentage, for towns
across Victoria by property
type every quarter and this
data is available free on our
website.
The REIVs latest data shows

regional Victoria had some

of the states highest gross
rental yields in the three
months to June 30. Threebedroom homes in Morwell
topped the list with a 7.5 per
cent return, which was only
surpassed statewide by Carlton, at 8.8 per cent on a onebedroom apartment.
Two-bedroom properties in
Mildura also recorded high
yields with units generating
a 7.1 per cent return while
the same sized homes were
slightly lower at 6.9 per cent.
With a median house price
of $218,000 and a weekly
rent of $280, three-bedroom
homes in Mildura were also
ideal for investors with a
yield of 6.7 per cent. This
was a better return than a
three-bedroom home in the
bayside suburb of Brighton,
where the yield was held
down by the high median
purchase price of $1.65
million.
Other regional areas with
high rental yields were
three-bedroom homes in
Shepparton (6.4 per cent),
Bairnsdale (6.3 per cent),
Stawell (6.2 per cent) and
Echuca (6 per cent).
Investors should also consider Sebastopol on Ballarats fringe where the
yield was 6.1 per cent on a
two-bedroom unit and 5.6
per cent on a three-bedroom
home.
High rental yields were also
recorded for three-bedroom
homes in North Bendigo and
Corio, at 5.8 and 5.7 per cent
respectively.

When it comes to improving the performance of your

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to
hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.
(Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data
as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

Ballan Netball

B Grade v Waubra
Preliminary Final
Ballan found their feet quickly in the
first quarter to take a one goal lead into
quarter time; rotation in the goal ring and
quick passing allowed Kathy Burquest and
Jayme Nielsen to make the most of their
opportunities. The game continued to go
pretty much goal for goal with both teams
playing at a high intensity. Kath Lloyd
dominated in WD combining with Mel
Conory and Kylie Fenwick in defence to
force turnovers and allow the ball to flow
into Ballans attack. Positional changes from
Waubra in the third quarter saw the game
shift momentum and it was Waubra that
got the edge. Ballan fought out a great game
but couldnt get back the lead that Waubra
had gained in the third quarter. Coach Noni
McClure was incredibly proud of the girls
who only two weeks before finals were
10th on the ladder, so to be playing in a
preliminary final was a huge achievement
from everybody involved.
Waubra 38 defeated Ballan 27.

The township of Gordon

certainly has reason to celebrate, with the Senior football team in the CHFL grand
final, their first appearance
since 1988.
At Dunnstown on Sunday
the Eagles had a job to do
coming up against Ballan,
and they certainly made
their mark in the first quarter, booting six goals to one.
Ballan showed some promise with the wind in the
second quarter but could
only manage two more goals
when the final siren sounded, whereas the Eagles booted a whopping 19 majors.
Ballan had six single goal
kickers with Daniel Nielsen
and Shaun Campbell never
giving up, despite the sad
state of the scoreboard.
Small forward Mick Nolan
was fast and furious around
the packs and along with
Steve Nicholson, booted five
goals.
The game plan for Ballan
