2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

Thailand dominates in the global cassava trade. In 2014, Thailand exported
6,800 thousand tonnes of assava totaling 1,523 million USD, 16% over the
previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied
essentially all (99.6%) of its total assava exports in value terms, accounting
for 72% of Chinas total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Thailand was a net exporter of assava. Over this period,
exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical
terms, the difference was less pronounced.
Indonesia and the Netherlands were among the other main global suppliers of
assava in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014
were Italy (+72% per year) and India (+31% per year).
Thailands top 5 trading partners in 2014 were the aforementioned China, as
well as Japan, New Zealand, Australia and the U.S., with a combined 99.9%
share of Thailands assava exports. The share of China surged (+37
percentage points), while the share of Japan dropped slightly (-1 percentage
points).
