"Silent, © Moyle — Ireland + Thomas Moore's words to this melody include these lines: “When shall the ‘swan, her death-note singing, sleep with wings in darkness furled? That aye d sae blythe wi’ my dear Hieland laddie, O!” The bittersweet sound of this melody is typical of “much Scottish music and is one of the things I like best about it. The lass, amid happy dreams of her ‘dead beloved, bids farewell to her “mammie and daddie,” her sheep, her dog, and, in my favorite line, + the hills: “Fareweel ye knowes, no sae cheerless and scroggie, O!" “Fear Bhata, “the Boatmen” — Scotland +A lady waits to see whether he over wll mae it into port. “Like many melodies it can be played in varying moods. own by the Salley Gardens — Herbert Hughes + Wiliam Butler Yeats wrote a poem which was then to music. I find it hard to stop playing this one, after the variation | ‘think I will go back to the tune just once more... ‘Arrane Ben-Vlieaun (Song Of The Milkmaid) — Isle of Man + Though agriculture is not currently a large part of Manx economy, this “milking song” has been remembered Er Ean Bashtey (John the Baptist) — Isle of Man + Here is another unique tune from the Manx Fisherman's Lilt — Anon. « It is easy to lilt with these compelling phrases and let the bar lines melt away. I have loved Allan's variation since I first heard it. He wrote it for guitar, and it really sings. ee + This beautiful tune is based on an old song, “The Grenadier and ‘The Meeting of the Waters — Ireland + Thomas Moore used this old air as a base for his poem which ‘Sweet vale of Avoca! How calm could I rest In thy bosom of shade, wi h te friends I love best ‘Where the storms that we fee. in this cold world should cease And our hearts, like thy waters, be mingled in peace And our hearts, like thy waters, be mingled in peace. ‘Mary's Lament — Ireland » In Canada, this air has survived as “The River in the Pines,” with tragic ‘words. I find it to be a flexible tune; it can actually be played quite merrily if the performer is in that Shule Agra — Ireland + In America this moving melody has survived as “Johnny Has Gone for @ Foscer” Some ofthe words are the same: “Only death can cease my woe, Sines the lad of my heart ‘me did go.” The music is well over three hundred years old. "Parting Forever — Ireland + This melody is a favorite old friend "All the Forepart of the Night — Isle of Man + Ruled by Vikings, Norwegians, and Scots inthe past, the {sle of Man is now a British crown dependency. ‘The Cuckoo's Nest — Wales * Cuckoo is right, so have fun. ‘Cuckoo Dear (Y Gwew Fach) — Wales « In this song, a girl asks the cuckoo to fly across the country 10 find her lover and comfort him with a “Springtide carol.” Down in Yon Banke — Scotland + John Skene collected music, including this wonderful tune, from ‘about 1610 to 1620 in what is known as The Skene Manuscript ‘Down by the Glenside — Peadar Kearney * This powerful song is ‘remembrance of the brave Fenian warriors of Ireland. ‘Song of the Falcon Chief — Isle of Man + Both the title and the music set my mind racing. It’s amazing ‘what can be carried through time and across oceans by only eight bars of music. Farewell but Whenever — Ireland * Thomas Moore used this air, “Moll Roone,” for his poem which finishes: ‘You may break, you may shatter the vase if you will, ‘But the scent of the roses will hang round it stil “The Parting Gass — The Skene Manuscript, Scotland + To be sung or played when is time 1B we e About the Music: All ofthe melodies in this book can be played either by recorder alone or with an accompanying instrument. Your musical partner doesn’t have to play a “chord instrument.” A cellist or bass player can also play the root note of the chord, or weave a beautiful duo based on the chord changes. If you can’t find a ‘musician to play with at all, don't worry; that’s why the CD was recorded with separate channels for guitar and recorder. ‘The metronome markings I supplied follow the tempos on the recording; were Allan and I to record the tunes again, they would most probably be different. One of my favorite quotes regarding tempo is what Johannes Brahms said when repeatedly pressed for a metronome marking: “Idiot! Do you think I want to hea ‘my music always played at the same speed?” About the Play-Afong Recording: To play along with Allan Alexander, the guitarist, switch your stereo’s balance to the right channe!, This will block the recorded recorder out completely. If it’s helpful at frst to hear the recorder part, adjust the ‘balance to the middle so that the recorder can be heard. Allan plays a two-measure introduction for each tune. Ifthe recorder part begins in the middle o: measure, that measure counts as the second measure. In other words, there is always at least one full measure introduction. When the recorder part begins on the first beat of a measure, there will be two full measures introduction played by the guitar. The few omaments heard on the recording are generally not notated in the music. I wanted to give you 2 ‘chance to decide when and how to omament the music as you play Cuckoo Dear and Song of the Falcon Chief are recorded on tracks 41 and 42 as duos. To play along. follow the instructions above, The second recorder partis on the right channel with the guitar (it consists of the variation and melody played variation-first).
