LESSON : LANGUAGE FOCUS
I.OBJECTIVES:
Aims: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
- Understand and distinguish consonant clusters /pt/, /bd/, /ps/ and /bz/ in
individual words and in utterances.
- Understand and apply cleft sentences to do exercises and communicate.
Teaching aids:laptop, speaker, textbook.
II. METHODS: Integrated, mainly communicative.

Warm-up (5 minutes):
- T asks Ss to work in group and put the

A. Pronunciation (8 minutes):
- T plays the tape and asks Ss to listen to
it once.
- T plays the tape again and asks Ss to
repeat the words they hear.
- T invites 2 Ss to re-pronounce the words
in Listen and repeat part.
- T explains 4 consonant clusters /pt/,
/bd/, /ps/ and /bz/.
- T plays the tape and asks Ss to look at
the sentences in Practise reading aloud
these sentences and listen to the tape.
- T invites 6 Ss to read aloud 6 sentences
in the textbook. T corrects mistakes if
any.

- Today we study sounds /pt/, /bd/, /ps/


and /bz/.
- Ss listen to the tape.
- Ss listen to the tape and repeat the words
they hear.
- Ss re-pronounce the words.
- Ss take notes.
- Ss look at the textbook and listen to the
tape.
- Ss reread aloud the sentences.

B. Grammar (30 minutes):


Cleft sentences:
- T explains the theory and gives
- Ss listen to the T and take notes.
examples:
Cleft sentence is the sentence in which
we emphasize the information we want by
putting that information in the structure
It is/was+ the information that/who .
Ex: John drove us to the school yesterday.
(normal sentence).
" It was John who drove us to school
yesterday.
We can use the cleft sentence to
emphasize subject, object and adverb.
a. Subject focus: It is/was + Subject +
that
Ex: Tom posted the letter yesterday.
" It was Tom that posted the letter
yesterday.
b. Object focus: It is/was + Object + that

Ex: Tom posted the letter yesterday.


" It was the letter that Tom posted
yesterday.
c. Adverbial focus: It is/was + Adverb +
that
Ex: Tom posted the letter yesterday.
" It was yesterday that Tom posted the
letter.
