EMPLOYMENT

Anna is a three-year-old female domestic short hair/Bengal cross. She has a

short brown tabby coat and big, curious yellow eyes. Anna has been patiently
waiting for her forever home since being surrendered to us two months ago due
to being incompatible with her previous family.
Anna loves to run around exploring her environment and can be quite playful with toys. She enjoys a good body rub and neck scratches, but she will be
sure to let you know when she has had enough! Anna is a very vocal cat who
will demand your attention by meowing when she wants to be petted or fed.
She can be a little feisty at times, needing her own space to chill out until she
is ready to be social again.
Anna would do best in a household with lots of stimulation and interaction
with her caregiver. As Anna likes to bond with a single person, she would be
best suited to a low-traffic home with just one or two caregivers.
If you are interested in Anna, come meet her at the BC SPCA Nelson Branch
or call 250-352-7178.

Free Tipping For Yard/Garden Waste

After successfully piloting the project in 2014, the

RDCK is pleased to announce that the seasonal Free Yard
and Garden Waste program is now permanent! Every year
for the months of April and October residents in the East
Waste Sub-region will be able to deposit their yard and
garden waste at no tipping fee at the following facilities:
Creston Landfill, Crawford Bay Transfer Station,
Boswell Transfer Station
The RDCK anticipates that the continuation of this
program will reduce occurrences of yard waste burning,
thereby improving local air quality. Every spring and fall
there is a noticeable drop in air quality due from people
burning their yard and garden waste, says East Sub-region
Resource Recovery Chair Garry Jackman. Last April at
the East sub-region facilities, 373 loads of yard and garden
waste were brought in for deposit that may otherwise have
been burned. To me, that is a success story.
Yard and garden waste materials that qualify for free tipping fees include hedge clippings, weeds, shrubs, and shrub
and tree branches less than 15 centimeters (6) in diameter.
Materials that do not qualify include tree stumps, noxious
weeds*, rocks, sand, soil and fruit & vegetable material.

Congratulations to you and everyone else who helped to

create it. I see it becoming something quite large, to which
people travel each year from all over. The energy, and the
connections that were happening were quite remarkable.
It was one of those days when I felt very proud to be part
of this community. with love and gratitude
Events are hosted in various studios, venues and parks
of Nelsons beautiful lakeside - mountain town, where
you are encouraged to walk and cycle between events
and enjoy the vibrant downtown and beautiful mountainscape. Nelson provides an ideal location to celebrate
mindful-living, love of nature and engaged community.
We will have an expanded Spirit Market at Lakeside Park
with local vendors. As part of our mission of accessibility
within our community we will once again offer a free concert, acro yoga, hoops and new this year, our kids zone. Fun
for the whole family. Our focus includes Youth (teens and
young adults) and we will be providing youth programming by and for youth. 38 workshops, 5 diverse concerts, a
wellness market, an ecstatic dance event and amazing peeps
including you! Join us September 18-20 in Nelson BC!

Free Car Seat Clinic

The Castlegar Public Health Nurses will be hosting a

Free Car Seat clinic. The clinic will be held September
16 at the Castlegar Fire Hall. The firehall makes an ideal
location, and the public health nurses appreciate the support of the fire department. We are very lucky to have the
use of the firehall so the clinic can happen rain or shine,
said Denise Talarico, PHN at the Castlegar Health Centre.
They just pull the fire trucks out and the cars come right
in. They are all under cover so that if it is rainy or miserable the clinic can still take place. The firefighters are very
generous in lending us the use of the hall.
Certified child passenger safety educators will check
out the car seat, how it is installed in the vehicle, and how
the child is secured in the seat. They will also look at recall
lists and check out what is the best place for the seat to be
installed in each individual car.
We all learn from it. Its not an inspection process, it
is a learning process. It can be so easy to make errors as

to how you actually put your seat in the car and how you
secure the child in the seat, Talarico, Statistics tell us that
in BC, 1400 children under the age of 9 are injured and
4 are killed in vehicle crashes each year. Research shows
that seatbelts and car seats, when used properly, are the
most effective tools in preventing injuries and deaths in
crashes.
Appointments are necessary to utilize the clinic and
can be made by calling Castlegar Public Health at
250-365-4310.

Kaslo Community Garden Club Update

We recognize that this season more people than ever

assisted the Kaslo Community Garden Club (KCGC) to
sustained success. Let me tell you about the KCGC and
the support we receive. The Village of Kaslo owns the land
and provides a lease and water fee. Our Village maintenance crew bring us mulch for paths and make sure that
water is turned on and off for the season. The Victorian
Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society is the KCGC sponsor,
and provides funding opportunity and pays insurance
and lease bills.
This season there are 14 member gardeners who have
individual allotments and grow food and flowers for their
own households. JVH students and teachers are in the
garden one hour a week in the spring and fall, learning
and contributing to the work of the garden. Food Hub
staff and volunteers have helped work in Food Cupboard
gardens. Support members and our community cheer
us on and arrive to help on special projects; maybe to
develop a new garden bed, contribute to compost, donate
horse manure, or tools or seeds.
Our executive and members are regularly in the garden keeping up maintenance and improvements. Anne
Heard, Donna Butt, Catherine McCormick, Heidi Stuart
and Hazel Calder are executive members who all work at
gardening, planning and hosting school programs. Stuart
Heard and Ken Butt regularly give of their time to trim,
fix and haul. This season, members who have given regular work time to improving and maintaining common
ground, the Food Cupboard and Help Yourself Gardens
include Lorene and Alex Archdeacon, Philip Pedini,
Loraine Symmes and Fiona Anderson.
Our Community garden is a valuable public resource.
Kaslos gardening culture will continue to enhance the
entire village, as well as keeping the KCGC going strong
well into the future.

Another Great Season Of

the eleventh year of the Performance Series, the goal of
which is to bring high quality arts performances to Rossland. When RCAC selects performances for the series we
focus on artistic excellence, diversity of genres, affordability,

We are very happy to be able to continue to bring in
high calibre programming that would not otherwise be
available in our community, says Theshini Naicker, chair

Johnny George Sorensen

June 9, 1933 August 16, 2015

It is with sadness that we had to say goodbye to

Johnny on August 16, 2015 at the Silver Kettle Village
Seniors Complex in Grand Forks, BC.
Johnny was born on a farm in Creston, BC. He was
one of eight children. In his early years Johnny was a
true horseman with a passion for the outdoors. After
moving to the West Kootenay he was a hardworking
logger and farmer for most of his career. He and his
wife Edythe raised a family of four children: Donna,
Sandy, Grant and Hugh. After retiring from logging,
his sense of adventure led him to dabble in running
roadside cafs on the Kootenay Lake for a brief time.
Johnny then migrated over to the Arrow Lakes where
he built a floating cabin at Scotties Marina. He also
bought and refurbished an old steel hulled tugboat,
the White Jade. His ultimate enjoyment then
became those simple pleasures of spending time at
the cabin, socializing with family and friends and
exploring the Arrow Lakes in his tugboat.
Johnny (Sor as some called him) had a passion to
live and enjoy life how he chose to. He was a very
hardworking, free spirited man, full of intrigue,
curiosity and sense of adventure. He had a magnetic
personality, a deep voice and boisterous laugh. No
one was more sociable he was never shy to strike
up a conversation or have a drink with anyone close
by that he knew or just met. Those who met Johnny
once, never forgot him. Those who got to know him
long term, saw a legend in his own realm. Johnny's
wealth was in his self-taught practical knowledge,
intuition and hands on 'can do' ability.
As a Dad he provided us a wonderful, happy, active
family life, full of joy, animals and experiences we
will remember all of our lives. He would give and
do anything he could to help neighbours, family,
friends and even strangers. Johnny never drove
by anyone stranded with their hood up on the
roadside without stopping to help. No matter how
busy he was monkey wrenching on machinery, he
would always stop to fix a kids bike, etc. Johnny's
eyes were the brightest blue, with a mischievous
twinkle always lit up in them. He liked to tease
and joke with everyone. He was the life of the

party with his signature 'yahoo' entrance, or singing

his numerous jingle rhymes to his grandchildren.
Although he is gone, he will definitely not be
forgotten. He leaves behind three siblings: Kay,
Creston, BC; Marion, Vernon, BC; and Barbara,
Coleman, AB; his children: Donna (Bob) Tennant;
Sandy (Mark) Cimolai; Grant (Debbie) Sorensen;
Hugh (Deanna) Sorensen; nine grandchildren:
Robert, Teena; Stacey, Patrick, Tania, Mickey, Jamie,
Karlene and Roxann; nine great-grandchildren:
Tyson, Hayley, Reese, Kaylan, Brayden, Lucas, Ruby,
Cole and Elsie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Johnny was predeceased by his parents Sam and
May; his brothers Carl, Dave and Stan, and sister Anne.
A celebration of life will be held on October 3, 2015
at 1 pm at the Salmo Legion, luncheon to follow.

Cheers to you Johnny, you old potlicker, what a unique and special man you were!
Thank you for being a huge part of our lives, giving us so many unique and cherished memories!
Rest well and enjoy the next life, looking down like a floating eagle with pride, smiling and laughing,
while forever happy to have lived life to the fullest, how you chose to...

SHARING THE HARVEST AND FOOD
RECOVERY PROGRAMS IN KASLO
The Kaslo Food Hub has a new Harvest
Share Gleaning and Food Recovery Program.
This new effort aims to bring more fresh,
seasonal, nutritious food into our regular
offerings through the North Kootenay Lake
Food Cupboard and it has been steadily
building momentum. Gardeners and farmers
in the area with an overabundance of produce
are encouraged to donate their excess to us.
The response has been amazing. Every week
we receive generous donations of veggies.
Food Cupboard clients are telling us what a
difference fresh produce is making for them.
With the help of some of our food cupboard
clients, we have been growing some of
our own produce on the St. Andrews Hall
property, right outside our door. We have
also been using a plot generously provided
by the Kaslo Community Garden. Members
of that garden club have helped to keep that
plot watered and well tended. They have also
planted a large number of squash plants with
fruit earmarked for the Food Hub. So far this
season we have had donated or grown over
600 lbs of fresh vegetables for the food hub.
Many of you already know that this is a
bumper season for tree fruits. Apple, pear,
and plum trees are loaded with fruit. Through
the Feeding Families Not Bears Program,
we maintain a database of volunteers willing
to pick fruit for people unable to do so for
themselves. That fruit then gets divided

between the landowner, the volunteer pickers,

and the food hub. We have helped harvest
tree fruits from Mirror Lake to Argenta;
this helps to manage bear attractants
throughout the area. We also gratefully
accept fruit donations that people bring to
our doors. Between these two methods we
have received over 1650 pounds so far this
season, including cherries, plums, pears and
apples. Weve distributed the fruit through
our regular offerings at the Food Cupboard
as well as provided some to the Seniors
Hall. Additionally volunteers have helped us
process much of this fruit. Weve dehydrated
and frozen significant amounts so we can
give it out over the course of the winter when
fresh seasonal fruit isnt available.
Local businesses and restaurants who work
with food products have been approached
to donate food items like produce, meat,
canned and dry goods, dairy items or surplus
prepared foods like sandwiches, soups,
stocks, casseroles, baked items, etc. This
part of our program is just getting going but
weve had some enthusiastic response by
certain local business owners and hope to
build a relationship that allows us to broaden
the scope of healthy and nutritious food that
we offer at the food cupboard.
Use of food banks in Canada is on the rise.
On average there are almost 200 visits per
month to our food cupboard and we want to
provide healthy, nutritious food to the extent
we are able. Gleaning and food recovery
programs are becoming an important
part of doing that for more and more food
banks across our province. Our program
is modeled on similar programs already
successfully underway in communities like
Nelson, Creston or further afield. Much of our
programs success relies on the generosity
of volunteers and its been wonderful to see
how many people in Kaslo and Area D have
donated their time or resources to make
our new Harvest Share Gleaning and Food
Recovery program get off to a great start.
Thank you!

The Nelson Public Librarys Slocan Valley Outreach

program is gearing up for the fall. Our first mobile library
session will take place at Passmore Seniors Lodge on
Thursday, September 17 from 3 to 7 pm. Everyone is
welcome but be prepared for spontaneous outbreaks of
scrabble and pinochle by outreach regulars.
Valley (Area H South) residents can sign up for a Nelson
library card and check out items from our rotating collection of books, CDs and DVDs for all ages. Our friendly
outreach librarian is on hand to answer questions about
the many services that the library offers, including downloadable e-books, language learning and travel databases,
Zinio online magazines, and more. Want a book and cant
make it to the library in Nelson? Contact the library to
ask to have it sent to the Heritage Credit Union in Slocan Park, or to Passmore on the third Thursday of each
month. And dont forget the Credit Unions 24-7 drop box
for returning library items.

Hike for Hospice Hike For Life

Looking for an outdoor activity, fun and community

involvement? Participate in a community wide effort on
Saturday, September 26 to raise funds for the Hospice
Society of North Kootenay Lake.
Young and old, hikers, walkers, runners, scooter riders,
wheelchair participants, and dog companions are all welcome. Hospice services are increasing as awareness of the
importance of supportive programs surrounding death
and dying grows. Events such as this one are held all over
the world to raise support and awareness for the work of
hospice organizations.
Participants can pick up pledge forms and information
sheets from Kaslo Florist, Sunnyside Naturals, Cornucopia, Kaslo Seniors Hall, and Willow Home Gallery. Bring
the pledge sheets to the festive registration area in the
Kemball Building garden, 312 4th Street at 1 pm on Saturday, September 26 to receive a map and any last minute
instructions. The 5 km route, which will be supervised by
volunteers, covers both a 1.5 km easy scooter portion and
a longer Kaslo River Trail portion. The full hike will take
approximately 2 hours. Refreshments will be served afterwards, and prizes given for a number of categories.
Event organizer, Hospice Society of North Kootenay
Lake appreciates co-sponsor Willow Home Gallery, hike
participants, and all who are out there making pledges.
We invite you join in and enjoy the afternoon. Questions?

Federal Candidates Debate In Kaslo

All are welcome to attend an All Candidates Debate to be

held in Kaslo on Tuesday evening, September 15. It will be
held at JVH School Lighthouse Theatre. The forum is sponsored by the Kaslo Chamber of Commerce, and it has been
decided that there will not be time for an open mic opportunity. The public is invited to submit questions to the candidates prior to the forum. Please email your questions to the
Chamber at info@kaslochamber.com, or alternately, questions can also be submitted to the Chamber office opposite
the Kemball Centre on 4th Street, in writing, during office
hours on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
All questions must be clearly defined with your name
included. Questions will be vetted by the Chamber board
(to reduce duplication and add diversity), then placed into
a hat and randomly selected by the moderator. Questions
will be received until Monday, September 14.
The Kaslo and area all candidates forum will start precisely at 7 pm, Tuesday, September 15. The forum will
start with the Rules of Engagement and a three minute
introduction from each candidate. The length of time
each candidate has to speak will be strictly regulated, with
a timer notifying the moderator and candidate when his
time is up. The moderator will read out each question for
the candidates to respond to; there will be a two minute
time limit for each response. The forum will end with a
two minute summation from all the candidates attending.

Sales And Marketing Initiative

The Lower Columbia Region is thriving! The most recent

economic statistic in a series of published metrics highlighting our thriving economy is the number of jobs posted
in the Lower Columbia Region. From January through
August 2015 there have been 1,100 different employment
opportunities posted at the Community Skills Centre!
The Community Skills Centre updates their job search
page daily, and posts a variety of employment opportunities in our region that apply to all different skill levels.
The most recent postings in August showcase a demand
for highly skilled workers; Columbia Power is looking for
a Project Engineer, Interior Health posted for a Health
Services Manager and Nursing Unit Assistants, Trimac is
hiring mechanics, and numerous companies have opportunities for Class 1 truck drivers. Other recent postings
include veterinary manager and assistant, automotive
technicians, support workers, care aids and many, many
more.
Terry Van Horn, Economic Development Coordinator
for the Lower Columbia Initiatives commented, Workforce development and attraction has been a re-occurring
theme this year in economic development, and the Skills
Centre is a valuable resource to assist with the growing
demand for skilled workers in our region. According to
BC Labour Market Information, employment in the Kootenays is forecasted to see an increase of nearly 4,700 jobs
by 2020!
To assist with the demand for skilled workers in our
region, the BC Jobs Plan has created the Kootenay
Regional Workforce Table, a regionally-driven group
consisting of key leaders that has developed the Regional
Skills Training Plan to address labour shortages and skills
gaps. The aim of the table is to align existing regional
training to meet local employment opportunities, and to
ensure access to training and job opportunities in their
home communities.

World Suicide Prevention Day

Across Canada and across the globe, on September 10

people will gather in communities to show their support
for suicide prevention, to remember and celebrate the
lives of those who have died, comfort those who grieve
and strengthen our connection with each other. During
World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), we remember
that by reaching out and being connected, we can save
lives.
Preventing Suicide: Reaching out and Saving Lives is
the theme that the International Association for Suicide
Prevention (IASP) has chosen for this years World Suicide Prevention Day. This year, the theme encourages us
all to consider the role that offering support may play in
combating suicide. Bringing this theme home, the West
Kootenay/Boundary Suicide Prevention, Intervention
and Postvention (PIP) Committee is promoting Reaching Out as the theme for WSPD.

On September 10 the local WSPD committee is inviting

all people in the West Kootenay/Boundary region to reach
out, to show concern for each other and to join in a local
kite flying ceremony. As a symbol of WSPD, the kite and
string represent our connection to the things we strive to
stay connected to: hope, community, those we have lost,
and those who struggle with thoughts of suicide. This year,
the local WSPD committee has chosen to add the symbol
of a hand and we invite people to attach paper hands to
kites to symbolize reaching out to each other for support.
On September 10, our kite flying ceremony will take
place at Nelsons Lakeside Park 12 pm to 1 pm. For more
information on the resources available to those affected by
suicide please visit the visit http://suicideprevention.ca/
For support please contact the crisis line at 1-888353- CARE(2273). For more information on the event,

Ode To A Farmer Poetry Contest

As part of the annual Farmers Appreciation Week,

September 12-19, the BC Association of Farmers Markets (BCAFM) is inviting British Columbians to submit
their original poems to honour our local farmers. Writers
of all levels are encouraged to submit their agricultural
themed-poems to the third annual Ode To A Farmer
Poetry Contest by Sunday, September 13.
The grand prizewinner will receive a $150 gift certificate to spend at the BC farmers market of their choice.
Regional winners from the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast,
Kootenay Rockies, Northern British Columbia, Thompson Okanagan, Vancouver, Coast & Mountains and Vancouver Island will also be chosen and awarded $50 gift
certificates. Submissions are being accepted online or by
mail.
Whether it be a haiku, sonnet, or limerick, we are looking for people to use their creativity through words to
show their appreciation of local farmers who contribute
greatly to our communities, health and well being, says
Georgia Stanley, BCAFMs Communications Manager.
There is a great tradition of writers finding inspiration
from the land that is continued through the Ode To A
Farmer contest, says Tamara Leigh, president of the BC
Farm Writers Association, and contest judge. I look forward to seeing how people connect creatively with food
and farming, and bring it to life in their poems.
Along with the Ode To A Farmer Poetry Contest, the
public can enjoy various activities in celebration of Farmers Appreciation Week that highlight the contribution BC
farmers and local food make to our lives. From parades
and musical tributes, to farm equipment displays, there
are events for people of all ages to enjoy at farmers markets across BC throughout the week.
The BCAFM is a not-for-profit association that represents 125 farmers markets across the province and works
to support, develop and promote farmers markets in all
regions of BC. For more information on the BCAFM or
to find a farmers market near you, visit www.bcfarmersmarket.org.

Its A Mystery
At The Slocan Community Library

The fall season of the authors readings at the Slocan Community Library will kick off at 1 pm on Sunday, September
27 when Deryn Collier, author of Confined Space and Open
Secret,appears
at the library.
These
suspenseful novels
feature
protagonist
Coroner
Bern Fortin,
who retires
to Kootenay
Landing in
search of the
tranquility of
small town
life, but interactions with
his
neighbours
and
the town folk lead pretty quickly to riveting, page-turning
intrigue. Since the release of her second novel, Collier has
firmly established the Fortin Series, as her books are becoming known, to be required reading for any lover of the genre.
The mystery collection at the Slocan Community
Library has always been well appreciated by patrons. Fiction fans in general will enjoy meeting Deryns characters as well. In fact, as Peggy Blair, author of The Beggars
Opera has said of Open Secret: You feel like your best
friend has moved out when you turn the last page.
Collier is well known throughout the area. She was
raised in Montreal, graduated from McGill University
and now lives with her husband and sons in Nelson. Confined Space was shortlisted for the Arthur Ellis Awards
for the best first crime novel.
The fall series will continue on Sunday, October 25 at 1
pm with Tom Wayman and Ernest Hekkanen. It will be a
return visit for both of these authors. They will be sharing recently-published collections of short stories. Toms
feature the Slocan Valley, and Ernest thrills us with tales
based on his childhood. Or are they? All readings at the
Slocan Community Library are free.
