Malaria
web: www.sanparks.org
The Kruger is a malaria area although the risk is usually relatively low, especially in dry seasons when
water is scarce. Most mosquitoes do not carry malaria so being bitten does not mean one will contract
the illness. However, anti-malarials are recommended for visitors to the Kluge; but even prophylaxis is
not 100% foolproof The best is to avoid being bitten by covering exposed skin, using mosquito repellent
and burning mosquito cols, (especially between dusk and dawn - when mosquitoes are most active). The
normal incubation period for malaria is 7-14 days but may be much longer if one is semi immune or
has taken prophylaxis. A typical malarial attack indudes headache, periodic episodes of sequential chills,
fever and sweating Associated symptoms may indude fatigue, dizziness, muscle and joint pains, wealmess,
vomiting, nausea and diarrhoea If in doubt, seek medical help immediately

Close to the Olifants Rivq Balule Camp
is a small, rustic camp with six rondavels and a
camping site. It has no electricity but has gas
geysers. Animal calls at night make for an exciting
stayover From a photographic perspective, this
is our favourite camp.

History of the
The settlement of Stone Age man between 30 000 and 100 000
years ago is supported by findings of cultural artefacts and
archaeological sites. More than 100 rock paintings and engravings
are evidence of the San's (nomadic hunter-gatherers) movements
through the area. There is also evidence of the presence of Iron
Age man from around 1500 years ago.

The chameleon
catches insects by
shooting out a sticky
tongue which is
almost as long as its
body length. The eyes
move independently
