At United Bicycle Institute, learning bicycle mechanics is fun

serious fun and every UBI instructor understands that when

learning is fun, its effective! While ensuring every students
enjoyment, we also pay close attention to safety, reliability,
efficiency, and industry standards.
Each member of our team draws upon a wide array of industry experience to offer a
unique perspective on our course materials whether its operating a busy service
department, working the trenches of the World Cup race circuit, or helping develop
innovative new equipment with some of the bike industrys premiere brands.
Each UBI lesson builds an understanding of how each system on a bicycle works before
demonstrating how to service it. This combination of experiencing why and how,
along with significant hands-on learning time, allows students to hone their problem
solving skills and become well-rounded mechanics.
You cant miss the infectious enthusiasm that flows throughout UBIs campuses Its
that energy that helps us connect with a wide variety of students and learning styles,
and consistently earns rave reviews from graduates.

School Facilities
UBI classes are offered at two state-of-the-art
Oregon campuses: our headquarters in Ashland,
a beautiful town in southern Oregon, and an
urban facility in Portland, the states largest city.
The Ashland facility features a 2000 square foot
mechanics classroom and a 1200 square foot
frame building shop, and provides quick access to world-class mountain bike trails
and scenic road rides.
In Portland, students enjoy a 3000 square foot mechanics classroom, with a separate
2400 square foot facility dedicated to frame building classes, located in the heart of
Portland one of the countrys most unique urban cycling cultures.

Whichever campus you choose, well provide a hands-on manual to take home as
well as the use of a professional tool kit for classwork and after-hours projects. Both
frame shops feature top-notch professional machine tools, TIG welders, torches and
the best frame jigs in the industry. The Ashland and Portland campuses share the
same polished curricula.

UBI is licensed by the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission as a private

career school and is also approved for most VA-funded occupational education opportunities. Additionally, UBI is approved by the US Department of Homeland Security
to issue student visas for our foreign guests.

About Ashland, Oregon

Home to the world famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Ashlands historic downtown looks much like it did at the turn of the 20th century, featuring quaint shops,
craft brew pubs, cafs, boutiques, art galleries, and dozens of restaurants, all within
a 5 minute bike ride of UBI. Ashland is also home to the historic Lithia Park, listed by
TripAdvisor as a top 25 US park. Families will enjoy a hands-on childrens museum
and a lake with waterslides. Those looking to explore the rest of the Rogue Valley
will find over 50 wineries within a short drive, as well as an internationally acclaimed
creamery famous for its blue cheese.

But Portland is so much more. Foodies love Portland for its diverse and reasonablypriced quality restaurants and food carts, as well as the rich micro-brew culture. No

Often rated as the #1 cycling city in America, Portland offers students as much
mythology as it does geographic and social opportunities. With over ten times the
national average of people commuting daily by bike, its quickly evident that Portland is an urban oasis for cyclists. The city is crisscrossed with bike lanes and shared
roadways, and is home to over 100 bike shops, dozens of custom frame builders,
several major bike industry manufacturers, and a unique, trendsetting cycling culture.

Some students also choose Ashland as their outdoor adventure basecamp. Mt. Ashland features a seasonal ski resort, and the nearby Wild and Scenic Rogue River provides world-class rafting, hiking, fishing, and jet boat trips, as well as a great place to
relax. With Crater Lake and Redwood national parks, Mt. Shasta, the Pacific Crest Trail,
and the stunning Oregon coast just a short drive away, its hard to pass up this oncein-a-lifetime access to some of North Americas most unique outdoor adventures.

matter your taste or budget, there is always something around the corner. Most UBI
students attending class at the Portland campus prefer to remain in the city during
their stay, to experience the countless music venues, museums, galleries, an amazing
zoo, parks, and shopping all within cycling distance, and also easily accessed using
Portlands extensive public transit infrastructure.
Those adventurous enough to venture out of the city during their downtime can easily
access the Oregon coast and the Cascade Mountains, each just over an hours drive away.
With year-round access to Mt. Hood, epic mountain biking at Mt. St. Helens and Sandy
Ridge, hiking in the Columbia Gorge, and touring northern Oregons countless wineries,
Portland is close enough to nature for day trips with all the convenience of city life.

The Perks
For each class completed, UBI students qualify for a discounted order with our Ashland
neighbor, United Bicycle Supply. This one-time opportunity gives students up to a
year to compile a tool and repair parts order at near wholesale pricing.
While attending class, students also have an opportunity to place a one-time order from
one of our wholesale distributors at a substantial discount. Many take this opportunity
to replace or upgrade parts during our optional evening shop sessions. Additionally,
UBI has agreements with a number of industry partners that provide students with an
opportunity to purchase products at a substantial discount while attending UBI.

UBI Mechanic Certification

UBI is the bike industrys most respected training
institute. In fact, there are more UBI graduates

Frame Building and

Welding Classes
United Bicycle Institutes frame building school offers students the opportunity
to learn the craft in a classroom setting from some of the finest frame builders
in the country.
UBI first began offering frame building classes in 1991, and since that time over
3000 students have graduated from our frame courses. Many alumni have gone
on to successfully launch their own frame building businesses, while others
simply enjoy riding their new custom built frames recreationally.
Our curriculum, which has evolved over 3 decades through the experience of
some of the worlds highest-caliber builders, allows even beginners to design and
build a custom steel or titanium frame in just two weeks. At UBI, you wont just
watch someone else build your frame youll do all the work yourself under the
tutelage of our expert instructors with top-level tools and fixtures. UBIs frame
classes are capped at eight students each, ensuring each student receives the
individual attention and expertise necessary to build a high quality custom frame.

| United Bicycle Institute

When you sign up for a frame building course at UBI, you will benefit from
learning in a fully equipped classroom environment with your own work station,
a highly evolved curriculum, and faculty with decades of frame building and
instructional experience.

What You Will Learn:

First Time Frame

Builders

All UBI frame building courses are taught by accomplished frame builders, and are designed for enthusiasts
who want the satisfaction of riding a frame they built
themselves or students who aspire to become professional frame builders. There are no prerequisites, and no
prior experience is required to succeed.
UBI offers three frame building classes: Brazed Steel, TIG
Welded Steel, and TIG Welded Titanium. In each class,
students will build a high-quality mountain,
road, commuter, cyclocross, touring/randone,
BMX or trials frame that they get to keep at
the end of their two-week session.
All materials required to build a top-tier custom frame are included in the tuition price,
though some specialty frame parts require a
small upcharge. Every student is provided with
the opportunity to install a full complement of
braze-ons and, if building a lugged frame, students are
provided with high quality investment-cast lugs.
Students who successfully complete any of UBIs frame

Brazed Steel Frame Building

10 days

With the recent resurgence in handcrafted bicycles,

its no surprise that our most popular frame class is the
Brazed Steel course. This class is ideal for avid cyclists,
shop mechanics and managers, and aspiring professional frame builders. Students can choose lugged or
fillet brazed frame construction, as both techniques
are covered in class.
Frame building is a craft that requires focus and dedication. While the process challenges students, even those
with basic mechanical aptitude and no previous building experience finish class with a frame theyre proud of. Generally, every step of
the frames construction is executed by the student with their newfound skills.
We always have expert instructors close by if additional assistance is required.
Students who successfully complete this class will leave with a high quality
custom steel bicycle frame and a Certificate of Completion.

TIG Welded Steel Frame Building

10 days

Our TIG Welded Steel Frame Building class

offers the same instruction in frame design
and construction as our Brazed Steel class, but
uses TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding as the
joining method. Specially designed practice
welding sessions early in the course prepare
students to TIG weld a quality steel frame.
TIG welding skills can be somewhat more
difficult to acquire than brazing, so we recommend that students interested in this course
possess above-average mechanical skill and
hand-eye coordination. Good close-up vision
is also important, especially in the highcontrast light conditions characteristic of
the TIG welding process.
Students who successfully complete this class will leave with a high quality
custom steel bicycle frame ready for painting and a Certificate of Completion.

| United Bicycle Institute

TIG Welded Titanium Frame Building

12

10 days

Our TIG Welding Titanium Frame Building class offers all that the TIG (Tungsten
Inert Gas) welded steel class encompasses, but uses titanium instead of steel as
a frame material. Special emphasis is placed on proper cleaning and purging of
titanium tubes, titanium machining problems and solutions, as well as proper
titanium welding techniques.

Specially-designed practice welding sessions early in the course prepare the

student to weld their own titanium frame. As with our steel TIG frame class,
good close-up vision is important, especially in high-contrast light conditions.
Students who successfully complete this class will leave with a high quality
custom titanium bicycle frame and a Certificate of Completion.

TIG Welding Seminar

2 days

The TIG Welding Seminar introduces TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding to prospective frame builders, or builders with only brazing experience. This weekend
class is typically scheduled following a Steel Brazing Frame Building class to allow
students to experience both types of joining. Though not required, students can
benefit from this seminar in preparation for TIG welding frame building classes.
The seminar provides a detailed look at equipment selection and use, with
emphasis on producing strong, aesthetically-pleasing weld beads. As with all
UBI classes, plenty of hands-on practice is combined with lectures and demonstrations to give students an appreciation for accurate tube mitering and best
practices for joining bicycle tubes.

UBI offers Professional Career Development Seminars as continuing education for

industry professionals who want to add to their skills or seek training in emerging
technologies. Students who have completed UBIs Professional Repair and Shop
Operation class are also welcome to enroll. Current offerings include a disc brake
seminar, a seminar on servicing Chris King components, and the Fox Master Tech
Clinic, which trains mechanics in the latest Fox suspension technology. Check our
website at www.bikeschool.com for topics, schedules, and locations.
