MY THOUGHTS
by John L Jefferson
This is the final installment of a
multi-part series. Over the course
of my research regarding this story
it has become evident that Allco has little interest in conservation and sees Vermont as an opportunity to grab a
large bounty with little to stand in their way. Allco has used
solar power as a convenient way to make a pile of cash,
not because they care about our planet. The Melones connections to the likes of Monsanto, Goldman Sachs, and JP
Morgan Chase are troubling. For many capitalists, like the
Melones, the earth is nothing more than a resource to
pillage for their financial gain. The State of Vermont and
the Shumlin administration have empowered companies
like Allco to come into our beautiful state and carve it up
as they see fit. In response, the people of Vermont have
stood up. Whether solar or wind power, numerous projects
throughout the state have met resistance from Vermonters. It is encouraging to now see the citizens of Bennington
standing up against a powerful company and opposing a
scar upon our beautiful landscape. When a renewable energy project near his Marthas Vineyard summer home
began to take shape, Allcos chief executive, Thomas
Melone, sued Massachusetts fearing it would alter the direct viewscape from his property and in turn decrease its
value. However, when the landscape being abused produces
him financial gain and is not one close to his heart, any
project is fair game. When the citizens who cherish their
landscape stand up in opposition they are belittled and bullied by Allco and when a governing body stands up to them,
they face litigation. Allco has already sued the states of
Vermont, Connecticut, California, Massachusetts, and numerous cities. When the courts dont rule in their favor,
which is often the case, they appeal relentlessly. The town
of Bennington may be in line for Allcos next lawsuit. As
one Benningtonian put it, this is a case of Wall Street
hitmen who take no solar prisoners, and I couldnt say it
any better myself.

CELEBRATE FREEDOM!
On the 14th anniversary of September 11, our thoughts are once again with all those
who lost loved ones on that tragic morning. Remember the names, faces, and lives of the
men, women, and children who were killed, and look for ways to ensure that each and
every one of them is not forgotten. We invite you to join us in remembering September
11 and all that this day means.
There are numerous ways to participate in the annual commemoration and one of the
most powerful is performing acts of service in your communities in remembrance of the
victims of 9/11. When you choose to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11, you are
playing an important part in memorializing those who were killed, honoring the sacrifices
of the first responders, and remembering the spirit of unity that emerged in the aftermath
of 9/11.
However you choose to commemorate this anniversary, thank you for joining us as
we take a day to remember and honor.
Please take a moment and go online to: www.911memorial.org for more information.
All donations and sponsorships to the 9/11 Memorial are dedicated to developing and
sustaining the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
