1. A dc separately excited motor is running at 800 rpm, driving a load whose torque
is proportional to speed squared. Motor armature current is 500 A. The
armature resistance drop and rotational losses are negligible. Magnetic circuit
can be assumed to be linear. Calculate the motor speed and armature current if
terminal voltage is reduced to 50% and field current is reduced to 80%.

2. A dc separately excited motor is running at 500 rpm, driving a load, whose
torque is same at all speeds. Armature current is 90A. The armature resistance
drop can be neglected and field circuit is assumed to be linear. If both the
armature supply voltage and field supply voltage are reduced by 80%, calculate
the motor speed and armature current.

3. A separately excited dc motor is used as an adjustable speed drive over that
speed range 0 to 2N rpm. Speed is varied from 0 to N rpm by varying armature
voltage from 0 to V at constant flux. Speed is changed from N to 2N rpm by
varying flux with armature voltage maintained constant at V.
(i) Draw armature current vs. speed curve for the entire speed range for a
constant load torque.
(ii) Draw torque vs. speed curve for the entire speed range when armature
current is maintained constant.
4. A 220 V, 200 A, 750 rpm separately excited motor has an armature resistance of
0.05 . It is driving a load, whose torque has an expression:
Nm, where N is the speed in rpm. Speeds below rated are obtained by armature
voltage control (with full field) ad speeds above rated are obtained by field
control (with rated armature voltage).
(i) Calculate motor terminal voltage and armature current when the speed is
400 rpm.
(ii) Calculate value of flux as a percent of rated flux when the speed is 1500 rpm.

5. A DC separately excited motor is supplied by 200 V both for the armature and
the field circuits. It takes a total current (i.e. armature + field) of 100 A and runs

at 750 rpm. The resistances of the armature winding ad of shunt filed winding
are 0.1 and 40 respectively. Find out (i) the torque developed by the
armature and (ii) the copper losses. If the friction and iron losses amount to 1500
W, also calculate (iii) shaft power, (iv) shaft torque and (v) efficiency.
(Answer: (i) 230.3 N-m, (ii) 1902.5 W, (iii) 16.6 kW, (iv) 211.24 N-m, (v) 82.99%)
6. A 15 kW dc shunt motor has armature and field winding resistances of 0.25
and 200 respectively. Its no-load speed is 1200 rpm and it draws a current of
10 A when connected across a 300 V source. Calculate the speed of the motor on
full load. Assume that there is no change in flux from no load to full load.

7. A dc shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.2 and a field resistance of
250 . When connected across a voltage supply of 300 V, it draws a current of 70
A and runs at 1200 rpm. Determine the resistance to be added to the field circuit
to increase the speed of the motor to 1500 rpm at an armature current of 100 A.
Assume that the motor operates on the linear portion of the magnetization
curve.

8. A 500 V dc shunt motor at full load draws a current of 52 A at a speed of 1000
rpm. The armature resistance is 0.3 and the field resistance is 250 . It is
desired to reduce the speed of the motor to 800 rpm at 75% full load. Calculate
(a) the resistance to be added to the armature circuit, (b) the efficiency, (c) the
power loss in the armature circuit, and (d) the speed at half load with the
additional resistance in the armature circuit. Assume that the flux remains
constant.

11. A starter is required for a 250 V shunt motor. The maximum current limit is to
be 67 A and the minimum limit about of this value. The armature resistance
is 0.5 . Find the number of sections of the starter and the resistance of each
section.

12. A 4-section starter, for a 500 V shunt motor with an armature resistance of 0.4

starter, (b) with the starter modified to make the initial current (i) 120 A and (ii)
80 A. Show the speed changes graphically.

13. The open circuit characteristics of a shunt generator running at 850 rev per
minis as given in the table below, where 100% represents an induced
electromotive force of 100 V and a field current of 4 A. Find the open-circuit

field resistance Rf for normal voltage at normal speed. (d) Find the critical
resistance at normal speed.
