sold by Kodak in 1915. Is there a
way to determine its present value?

A: The Eastman Kodak company
originally introduced its No. 1-A
Folding Pocket Camera in 1899.

After a design change in 1905, it
continued to be manufactured until
about 1915. It was an extremely
good pictures.
To find out its approximate value I
checked eBay and discovered the
same model as your camera being
offered for sale with a minimum
bid of $99. There were no bidders.
I next checked with an advanced
camera collector, who told me that
the No. 1-A Folding Pocket
Cameras manufactured during the
teens generally sell in the $35 to
$65 range in good to excellent
condition.

The Eldred World War II Museum will host a WWII History
Roundtable on Saturday, March 13 at 11:00 a.m. The areas of
discussions for December are Pearl Harbor and the Battle of
the Bulge.
The WWII History Roundtable Series is organized by the
Education Committee of the Museum as a way to honor those
who have served, give opportunities for sharing our history,
and establish an open forum for learning. The Committee is
pleased to welcome Pearl Harbor Survivor Victor Peterson,
Battle of the Bulge veteran Elmer Delucia, and 28th Division
veteran Harry Niece among the participants in this event.
There will be no admission fee charged on Saturday, March
13 but donations to help out with the operations of the

LIVING ENVIRONMENT CLASSES

The Living Environment classes are learning about pedigrees, blood types,
karyotypes, and genetics to solve “who done it” mysteries. From there, the classes
will be moving on to mitosis and meiosis, which relate to asexual and sexual
reproduction. Stay tuned! More projects, more labs, and more activities will be
heading our way!

THE NATIONAL FINANCIAL CAPABILITY CHALLENGE

MARCH 9, 2010
In December 2009, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Education Secretary Arne
Duncan announced the National Financial Capability Challenge. They said that along
with getting the economy back on track and getting smarter about financial regulation,
we also need to make sure all Americans - but especially our youth - get the financial
education they need to help them take responsibility for their financial futures. Treasury
and Education are committed to working together on this issue. The Challenge - an
awards program for educators and high schools students that aims to encourage the
teaching of personal finance - is our first step in a new partnership.
An earlier version of the Challenge was organized by Treasury under the previous
administration, and this expanded effort builds on that success.
Our goal is to get one million high school students to take the Challenge, which
includes a voluntary online exam, by April 9, 2010. To make that happen, we’ll need
thousands of educators from across the country to register and get their students
prepared. Two thousand educators have already signed up.
The Financial Management Class is beginning the work towards taking the
Challenge on April 9, 2010. The students will examine and explore: Creating a good
credit rating, budgeting your money, learning, earning and investing, financial fitness,
building wealth, financing their futures, savvy saving, banking basics, how to read a
credit report, insurance to protect personal wealth, borrowers’ rights and responsibilities,
are among the many topics we will explore.
The Financial Management students have begun working on the National
Endowment for Financial Education High School Financial Planning Program.
Students are working on SMART Goals, which means: Specific, Measureable,
Attainable, Realistic and Time-Bound Goals.
Textbooks have been given to the Financial Management class by the National
Endowment for Financial Education.

HOUSE UPDATE
I know it’s been quite awhile since I last reported on the progress at our house site
on Friendship Street. However, if you’ve driven by you’ve seen that the siding and trim
are nearly complete and will be finished when good weather returns. Meanwhile, we
have been busy inside finishing our insulation, plumbing and drywall. There are just a
few areas left to do before we can turn our attention to the actual finishing touches.
We had hoped to be able to complete the project this spring but it appears we’ll need

SAT REVIEW CLASS OFFERED AT B-RCS
We have made arrangements with Jamestown Community College to hold SAT
MARCH 9, 2010
review classes in Bolivar for interested B-RCS students. The review classes will be held
from April 12-15 and April 26-29, at our high school building from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.,
just in time for juniors who plan on taking the SAT on May 1. The instructors will be
provided from J.C.C. and class size is limited to the first twenty-two students who
register. Juniors who will be taking the SAT will be given priority. Students must register
in the high school guidance office. The cost of the course will be $20.00 (to be used to
purchase books, which students may keep) Students will be registered when they bring
in their payment for the class. After April 5, students from other districts will be accepted.

PENN YORK COLLEGE NIGHT SCHEDULED
Penn York College Night, the premier college night in our area, will once again be
held at St. Bonaventure University on March 24, from 6:30 – 8:30 P.M. Over one
hundred colleges and other educational institutions will be represented this year.
Students and parents have the opportunity to speak with college representatives, receive
college brochures and financial aid information. I cannot stress how important it is for
college-bound students, particularly juniors, to attend this program. Since many of the
colleges in attendance will not visit our school during the school year, this may be the
only chance to speak with a particular college’s representative. Programs are available
in the high school guidance office.
FINANCIAL AID REMINDERS
Seniors have been reminded to be sure that they have filed the correct financial aid
applications to the colleges to which they have applied. In addition to all colleges
requiring the FAFSA, some colleges have their own application and, more importantly, its
very own filing deadline. Students should call their college financial aid department to
verify forms and deadlines. We have several good financial aid brochures available for
parents in our guidance office or, go to the FAFSA web site at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
SAT AND ACT DATES FOR COLLEGE-BOUND JUNIORS
A few years ago the SAT and ACT tests both added a writing section to their
assessments. The SAT includes a required writing section that will consist of multiple
choice questions and a 25-minute essay. The ACT also includes a writing section;
however, the writing section is optional. If a student takes the ACT without the writing test
the test fee is $32, with the writing part the fee is $47.00. I recommend that students find
out if the college they plan on attending requires the writing section–typically they do not.
I have been meeting with juniors to set up their senior year schedules. At those
meetings I have stressed the importance for them to take either the SAT or ACT this
spring (both, if they can afford it). Either one of these tests will be required by virtually
every four-year college and by some two-year colleges. Most colleges will accept the
SAT or the ACT test for admissions and scholarship reasons. Applications are available
in the high school guidance office or online. The information below will be helpful....

MAKING COLLEGE AND CAREERS COUNT COMES TO B-RCS
On Tuesday, March 1, juniors and seniors had a presentation from Making College
and Career Count, a nationally-replicated and highly regarded program that is an
offshoot of Monster.com.
Making It Count provides a nationally recognized series of live, in-school
presentations that educate and motivate teens to excel in both personal and professional
educational endeavors. The program is designed to help students begin to think about
their next steps upon graduation and what they need to accomplish throughout the
upcoming years in order to maximize their opportunities for future success. The program
also addresses important issues such as time management, choosing career paths,
gaining experience through internships and meaningful work experience and study skills.
Delivered by a roster of skilled presenters from a variety of backgrounds, including
members of the U.S. Olympic Team, the corporate-sponsored programs reach more than
2.5 million students every year, and are hosted at over 5,000 high schools and 650
colleges nationwide. More information is available at www.makingitcount.com.
NATIONAL COLLEGE FAIR TO BE HELD IN BUFFALO
The National College Fair will be held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center on
March 23 from 9AM – 12 PM and 6 - 8 PM and on March 24 from 9AM – 12 PM. Major
colleges from all over the United States will be sending representatives to speak with
students in grades 10-12.
Students may go to www.nacacnet.org and pre-register before attending the event.
By pre-registering, students can print a bar coded confirmation sheet to be used as an
electronic ID. At the event, students can have a college scan their bar code to get all the
student’s information, eliminating the time and hassle for students to fill out inquiry cards
for colleges...a really neat idea!

ANYTHING HAPPENING AT PRE-K????
I should say so!!! February was a very busy month for our pre-school friends. The
beginning of the month started with conversations about “Groundhog Day” and
predicting whether he would see his shadow. Half of the predictions came true; he did
see his shadow and disappeared back into his hole to wait out six more weeks of winter.
So...we celebrated!!! Mrs. Washer and Mrs. Pratt’s class hosted a party with many “hog-
filled” activities. The children searched for groundhogs in the sand table, created their
own pop-up groundhogs, popped up out of a groundhog hole (box) to see their shadow
and even enjoyed snacks that a groundhog might enjoy. (They are vegetarians)
We celebrated Valentine’s Day with a pajama party and invited our Head Start
friends to join us. We designed, cut out, and shared the valentines with our friends. We
shared books, enjoyed snacks and even watched a video. These times provide children
with opportunities to plan, share ideas, communicate with others and practice taking
turns.
The classrooms were also filled with many sensorial experiments. Discovery and
the language that follows is such an important part of a child’s education. The children
shaved soap and added toilet paper to make “clean mud”. They enjoyed the process and
loved working with the “mud”. They experimented with vinegar and baking soda and
described what they saw and heard, and in a small water table, they added flour and oil
for a “gooey” mixture.
We also worked on the letters using our letter bags. Parents help their child look
for items around the house that begin with the letter of the week. Many great objects are
found inside each child’s letter bag. They also loved the stories Three Billy Goats Gruff
and Ira Sleeps Over. The classes continued using the new amazing words that are
introduced each week and even
make up their own.

February was a busy month in our classroom. We celebrated Mrs. Slocum and
Mrs. Snyder’s birthdays. Since President’s Day was in February, we also did some fun
activities to celebrate the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. And don’t
forget Valentine’s Day. We celebrated the holiday with having a classroom pizza party,
punch, cupcakes, and of course, chocolate.
March will have us watching the newspaper closely for results of March
Madness...(college basketball). We will be completing some math charts and such with
the stats from the games.
February’s student of the month for our room is Greyson Bean. Greyson tries
very hard and does his best. As his classroom teacher, I am very proud to see his
continued success month after month. Congratulations Greyson! Keep up the good
work!
THIRD GRADE

Ms. Miles’ class is continuing their multiplication tables and working hard on math
and reading review for the upcoming state tests. We also just finished a mini unit on
dental health, and we are looking forward to a dentist presentation later this month! A
very happy birthday goes out to Kyleigh Ellis who will celebrate her special day on Mar.

She loves to read Junie B. Jones books and enjoys playing baseball. She also hopes to
be a teacher when she grows up! :)
Mr. Smith’s class is busy preparing for the upcoming NY State Assessments in
reading and math given in late April and early May. The children continue to read stories
and articles and are asked to answer a wide variety of questions about what they have
read. This work, combined with grammar rules, is helping to prepare for the ELA. In
math, the students are working on multiple-step word problems and trying to memorize
their multiplication facts 0-12.
Congratulations go to Anthony Carmichael, our student of the month. Anthony is
a very hard worker who is always willing to lend a hand to his classmates! Keep up the
great work Anthony!
Congratulations to Sean McNell for being the student of the month in Mr.
McCarthy’s class! Sean has consistently done a good job and is very helpful to Mr.

We continue our Pen Pal project with friends here in the US as well as British
Columbia, Canada (Olympic area), and have just sent our first batch of letters to our
friends in China. In math, we continue to work hard at our multiplication tables--keep
studying every night!
An important holiday with Mr. McCarthy is approaching, so find your green to wear
on the 17th!!
Reading vocabulary, spelling lists and the number of the week in X tables should
be coming home each Monday, so be sure your child has these things to look at for the
week.

FOURTH GRADE
Mrs. Perry, Mr. Pruch, Mr. Conklin........
Fourth graders have begun to think about their upcoming science fair, which will
be held at the end of May. All fourth graders will participate in the fair. There are no
teams this year; everyone is to do a project himself/herself. Mr. Pruch is asking
everyone to think about topics that interest them; later this month proposal sheets will be
distributed. Once a student decides on a project, the proposal sheet needs to be turned
back in. Approvals will be given on a first-come/first-approved basis. Students may do
an experiment, a model or a demonstration. Science fair links can be found on Mr.
Pruch’s teacher page.
The New York State Math Test will be given May 5, 6, and 7 this year. In
preparation for this test, each 4th grade student has been invited to join a study group to
stay after school and review. The program is from 3:00 - 4:00 Monday, Tuesday and
Thursday. The bus will take students home. We will be practicing questions similar to
what we expect to see on the test. It is our hope that students will attend each study
session they are invited to as we all work together to help prepare our students to be
successful on this test. Parents, you can help your child get ready by continuing to
practice basic facts. This is easily done through the use of flash cards. Knowing the
basic facts is a big part of correct responses. If your child knows the facts, they can use
their time more wisely on other parts of the test.
Student of the month recipients for this month are Emily Neudeck, Zach Adams
and Sara Pope. These students take pride in their schoolwork and helping others. Way

FIFTH GRADE
Miss Weitzel, Mrs. Cawley, Mr. Lounsberry..........
The fifth grade classrooms have been very busy this past month. In social
studies, Mr. Lounsberry’s students will be learning about the French and Indian War.
Interestingly, the war started not too far from us near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Battles
were fought north of us near Niagara Falls. Did you know that the book, The Last of the
Mohicans took place during this war? We also learned that this war helped contribute to
the Revolutionary War.
Soon, we will begin our study of the Revolutionary War. We will spend more time
learning about many new people such as Patrick Henry and events such as the Battle of
Yorktown. What do you know about this war that set us free from Britain? When we
finish, we will complete some interesting projects to finish the unit.
In science class, we have begun a unit on the solar system. Where is Ceres
located and what is it? How many planets are there? What is a dwarf planet?
Whatever happened to Pluto? These are just a few of the questions we will be
answering over the next few weeks. In addition to the solar system unit, everyone has
been hard at work on a project for the fifth grade science fair. You can join us on
Thursday, March 18, from 5:30 to 6:30 in the multipurpose room in Richburg if you want
to see the results of their great efforts. Winners will be announced at 6:15. Come and
be amazed at the wonderful projects that are turned in.
In math, the students have begun their measuring and geometry unit. Next
month, we begin studying for the state math test that will be given in May.
Students of the month for March are Katie Freeman, Macy Childs and Jacob
Smith. They are all responsible, friendly and hard working students.

that the bulb’s extremely low wattage and the fact that it is rarely turned
on and off have contributed to its longevity.

Treating a Cut Paw
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Bart” came inside from being in
the backyard today and was limping a bit. I checked his paw, and it looks
like he has a small cut on one of the pads. I’m not sure from where, but
there is still a bit of ice and snow around the edges of the yard. I
disinfected the cut, but I’m not sure what to do next -- a Band-Aid,
perhaps? -- Worried in Burlington, Vt.
DEAR WORRIED: A light gauze bandage, wrapped around the paw
and taped in place, will protect Bart’s paw while the cut heals. Don’t
wrap or tape so tightly that the circulation to the paw is affected -- you
just want to cover the cut.
Check the bandage daily and replace when it becomes damp or dirty
(which, if Bart likes going outside, may be daily). If your dog licks or
tries to chew away the bandage, pick up a cone-style or Elizabethan-style
protective collar at the pet store, or from Bart’s veterinarian.
If Bart’s limp does not improve within about three days or the cut does
not appear to be healing, take him to the vet to have the injury evaluated.
Likewise if his paw becomes swollen.
Meantime, head outside and try to get rid of sharp-looking ice patches, if
possible. Remove any debris from Bart’s run area and pick up any dog
feces to reduce the chance of infection in his injured paw (or if he injures
his footpads again for whatever reason).
