The plan of a single-storey building having two shear walls in each direction is
shown in Fig.1. All the four walls are of M 30 grade concrete and 230 mm thick.
Height of building is 3.6 m. Design shear force on the building is 260 kN in either
direction. Determine the lateral force for different structural walls using the
torsion provisions of IS 1893 (Part-1):2002.

4. For a building located in seismic zone IV and resting on medium stiff soil, the
dynamic properties (natural periods and mode shapes) for vibration in the X-direction
have been obtained by carrying out a free vibration analysis and are shown in the
Table 1. Obtain the design seismic force in the X-direction by the Response
Spectrum method as per IS 1893 (Part-1)-2002, and distribute it with building height.

Discuss the behaviour of unreinforced and reinforced masonry walls with neat
sketches.
Determine the frequency and design seismic coefficient for an ordinary masonry
shear wall in a school building in Chennai for the following data.
Roof Load = 20 kN/m
Height of wall, h = 3.4 m
Width of wall, b = 0.23 m
Unit weight of wall = 19.5 kN/m3. Soil is medium stiff.

Discuss the strategies in the location of Structural walls in buildings.

What are the common earthquake damages in non-structures? What measures are
to be taken to prevent them?
A beam AB is to be designed for positive and negative moments at the supports A
and B . Moments at the supports A and B are, MA= - 95 kNm and +32 kNm;
MB= - 92 kNm and +15 kNm. The characteristic dead and live loads are 14 and 8
kN/m respectively. The span of beam is 8m, beams are 350 550 mm with
150 mm slab. Assume M25 concrete and Fe 500 grade steel. The structure is
situated in seismic zone V. Design both the flexure and shear reinforcement as per
IS 13920. Sketch the reinforcement details.
