The Project Management Institute (PMI) was established in 1969, shortly afterwards PMI
published the A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide). The
significance of the PMBOK is to have a guide for Project Management Professionals and
Businesses to utilize and follow in order to complete projects. The PMBOK is written in such a
manner that any profession no matter what it is and no matter who reads it would be able to
follow the guidelines, practices, and standards within it and be able to complete a project.
Although PMI is known worldwide it is not the only project management institute in existence,
but if PMI where to conduct business internationally then they must belong to the IPMA
(International Project Management Association).
Another such Project Management Institute is the Australian Institute of Project
Management (AIPM), formed in 1978 as the largest and only national membership organization
for project management in Australia with over 10,000 members. The AIPMs objectives include;
the development of world project management standards and practices, proactively engage and
support and grow membership, to promote and communicate the value of PM and the PM
profession to key stakeholders and the wider community.
The Association for Project Management (APM) is a registered charity with over 20,000
individual and 500 corporate members that was started in 1972 in England. The APMs
objectives are geared towards the developing and promoting project and program management
