Classroom
monitor my classroom with ease. My teachers desk is also facing the classroom door so I can
easily monitor who is entering and leaving my classroom.
When it comes to student learning it can be beneficial to have the student desks
arranged in small groups or pods. Once I know my students well I can quickly arrange them for
small groups based on like or mixed abilities. I also have two half circle desks where I can sit
and work with small groups. I chose to have two half circle desks so I have a space to work with
small groups as the same times as any enrichment teacher or associates who are also working
with small groups. I also have multiple learning centers for students set up throughout my
classroom. The learning centers I included were a Social Studies center with maps, creative art
and drama center, computer/technology center, reading center, and lastly a science center
with a discover table. There will be different procedures for each learning center. Throughout
the first week of school I will model how we use each area for learning. I will also model how
these learning centers will look during free time or in-door recess.
Along with modeling the computers
I will also explain that children can only
access games or sites that I have approved.
I will also learn how the audio-visual and
instructional equipment works. If there is
something that students need to learn with
any of the equipment I will demonstrate
this throughout the first week of school. I
will remind students to please not touch
any of the equipment unless I have given
them permission.
Classroom Operations
Record-keeping procedures:
To keep track of student records I will use the Whaley Gradebook. I like this particular
grade book because it has three lines to make grading easier. These lines are for attendance,
Faidley 4
scores, and running totals. The running total allows for immediate access to any students
cumulative grade (Wong & Wong, 2009). I also like the idea of having a paper copy in case
there is a technology error. However if my district has any implemented record keeping
procedures I would follow that. After I am done grading all of the classs papers for a given
assignment I will enter them in my computer. If I am unable to finish entering all of my grades
for any reason I will have set aside a time on Mondays to finish entering graders from the prior
week.
New Students:
Making sure new students feel
like they are a part of the
classroom is very important to
me. To make new students feel
welcome I plan to do several
things. I will have all students
make a card for the new student.
This way when the student joins
2
the classroom they will see that
all students are excited to meet
the new student and knew that
the new student would be joining the classroom. The new students desk will also have a name
tag on it the new students name. I will also add another super hero logo on the classroom
door with the students name so that they feel like they are a part of the classroom. When it
comes to my grading I will add the new students name below the other students names in my
grade book. I will also assign this student the next available student number. Adding the new
students name below the other students names in the grade book and assigning the next
available number will save me time and will not interrupt the current procedures that I have in
place.
Classroom Cleaning:
From the beginning of the school year I will remind my students how important it is to
keep the classroom clean. I will discuss with them that the classroom is not my classroom it is
our classroom, and since it is our classroom everyone in the room is responsible for taking care
of it. To avoid having a messy classroom at the end of every day I will ask students to pick up
any big scraps of paper that they see around their desk. Students will not be dismissed until
they have checked the areas around their desks. Along with picking up the floor daily every two
weeks students will have a designated time where they clean out their desks and chair pockets.

Faidley 7
Mid-Level Infractions
The first mid-level infraction I will discuss is cheating. Each student being responsible
for their own work is something that would be stressed to students on the first day of school
and throughout the year. However if a student is caught cheating I would immediately respond
to the situation. Once I got the student away from classmates where they couldnt overhear
the conversation I would remind the student that by cheating they are only cheating
themselves. If the student is caught cheating off of another student in their pod that students
desk would be removed from their pod for a week. Parents would be notified by a phone call at
the end of the day. I would explain to the parents what I say and ask them if they had any
questions for me regarding the situation and consequence. Since I am teaching kindergarten
the student would have to recomplete the assignment. Students need to finish all assignments
because I need to know what they know and what they dont know.
The second mid-level infraction that I will discuss is students who are disrespectful to
me and or other teachers within the school. If a student is disrespectful to me or other
teachers I will call their parents at the end of the day. Students will also have a one on one
discussion with me during recess. Students will explain what they did and why it was wrong.
Students will also what they will do so that wont happen again. Along with discussing the
infraction with me students will be in charge of completing an apology letter. Having the
student write an apology letter can help them reflect and take ownership in what they did
wrong. It will be up to students to write the letter if they are unable to do so I will their letter
using their words.
Extreme Infractions
If an extreme infraction
occurred I would be ready with a
plan. If the extreme infraction
included violent or destructive
behavior I would first protect my
students that werent involved
in the violent or destructive
5
behavior. I would tell all of these
students to quickly exit the room and wait outside of the classroom in the hall. Once the
students were safely out of the classroom I would call down to the office for back up and join
my students in the hallway. For each extreme infraction broken my priorities are to keep my
students supervised, safe, minimize risk to students and myself and lastly call the office for
backup support (Mackenzie & Stanzione, 2010). If an extreme infraction occurred a parent or
guardian would be notified immediately after the infraction took place. After speaking to the
Faidley 8
parents and informing the guidance counselor I would arrange a meeting with the students
parents and guidance counselor to figure out why the infraction occurred and how to prevent it
from happening again. Depending on the severity of the infraction the principal may be also be
involved in the meeting. The consequences that the student would face would also vary on the
severity of the infraction broken. These consequences would be discussed and decided on at
the meeting involving the students parents, guidance counselor, and myself and what we think
is most appropriate for the situation.

four to five students. Each pod of students will have a bucket that has a superhero identity on
it. Each bucket will contain the shared materials that the students will need for classroom
assignments. The superhero identity on the bucket will also be the name of that particular pod
where it sits. For example if one pod has the Batman identity on their bucket their pod name is,
Batman.
Classroom Jobs:
I will have multiple classrooms jobs for the students. I think classroom jobs will help
build students responsibility and help promote a feeling of belonging and overall lead to a
positive classroom environment. Classroom jobs will be rotated weekly. All students will rotate
through every job. Classroom jobs will be posted in the front of the classroom. A magnetic
strip with the classroom job titles will be placed below the students name that are on the board
in alphabetically order. The job titles will move one spot down every week. The following jobs
will be assigned and their descriptions follow:
Lunch Counter: This student will count the number of clips on cold and hot lunch and present
these numbers to me so I can record them. This student is also responsible for making sure
every student has placed their clip on what lunch they will be having.
Super Sharpener: The Super Sharpener will make
sure all pencils are sharpened before class begins.
I will have two baskets of pencils next to the
sharpener; these baskets will be labeled
sharpened and un-sharpened. Super Sharpener
will sharpen every unsharpened pencil that is in
the un-sharpened basket. This will take place at
the beginning of the day will students finish their
breakfasts and put away their belongings. This
classroom job will make it so students arent
sharpening their pencils during class instruction.
This student will also demonstrate how to correctly stand in line and walk down the halls by not
talking and walking appropriately to and from the classroom.
Weather Boy/Girl: The Weather boy or girl will dress our weather bear every morning before
morning meetings. To help determine what the weather bear should wear Weather boy or girl
will look up the forecast for the next day using an app on the classroom iPad.
Incredible Gardner: This student will be responsible for watering all of the classroom plants.
Mighty Messenger: The Mighty Messenger will be responsible for running messages to the
office or to other teachers when needed.
Guardian of the classroom pet: Guardian of the classroom pet will be responsible for feeding
the classroom pet. Classroom pets will include fish and possible a small reptile or mammal.
Pod Leaders: Each group of desks will have a pod leader. This student will be responsible for
collecting the finished assignments from their classmates in their pods. Pod leaders will take
assignments to the completed assignments basket which is located next to the teachers desk.
Free time:
During free time students will follow the
same rules and procedures as they do during
class instruction. Students will keep their voices
low and will remain seated unless the activity
can be moved to the floor. Students activities
will be learning related and approved by me.
Some suggested activities could be free reading,
free drawing and writing, listening to music and
8
math and literature games. iPad and computer
games will be also be allowed but again these
games must be educational and approved by me. Students can earn free time through the
Superhero clip procedure. At the end of the week if the students are at Heroes or above they
will get free time. Free time will also be worked into the schedule on random days so students
who miss this opportunity on the clip procedure will not be penalized every time. Free time is
important because learning can be challenging and all students need to be rewarded for their
hard work.
Field Trips:
Educational field trips are a great way for students to be able to experience what they
are learning about first hand. I will follow the schools policies and procedures when planning a
Faidley 11
field trip. I will talk to students before the field trip and remind them that they will follow the
same classroom and school rules when going on a field trip. I will tell students the same rules
apply as soon as we walk out of the classroom, and the rules stay in place until we arrive back in
our classroom. Rules for transportation would be the same as the school bus rules. For
students who have not been on a bus I will remind them they must stay seated, wear a seatbelt
and keep their voices down. Food and snacks will not be allowed on the bus unless the bus
driver approves (Wong & Wong, 2009). Before each filed trip I will send out a letter to the
parents or guardians of the students explaining the details of the trip. The letter will also
include a permission slip that must be signed by the students guardian and returned to the
classroom prior to the fieldtrip.
Completing Assignments:
To help students complete assignments and finish their class work I will have a routine
in place that I will start the first day of school. Assignments will always be posted in the same
spot on the board. I will also have copies of the blank assignments posted on the board or
examples of what students were asked to do incase students need a reference to refer to.
During class time students know that they need to be quiet and only talk if they are asking their
pod mates or me questions over the assignments. When assignments are completed Pod
Leaders will collect the assignments and place them in the teachers completed assignment
basket. This is described in detail below.
Handing in Papers & Passing out Papers:
One of the weekly jobs is titled, Pod Leader. Students will place their finished work in
the middle of the tables. The Pod Leader is responsible for taking the completed papers and
placing them in the completed assignment tray next to the teachers desk. When students
hand in homework the same process will be done except the Pod Leader will place the
homework in a tray titled, Homework. If students have time they may submit their
homework in the morning. When it comes to passing out papers I will pass out papers to one
member of each pod and they will distribute the papers amongst their group. I will put the
leftover papers in a labeled basket next to my desk that reads, Extra Assignments. This way if
students didnt get a paper or they lost their paper they wont have to interrupt the class and
ask me for a paper. Instead they will be able to quickly get up and get the paper from the Extra
Assignments basket without any help.
Activities for students if finished with work:
If students finish their work early with extra time to spare there will be multiple things
that the student can do. First each student will have a homework pouch on the back of their
desk. If students finish their work early they can check their homework pouch and see if they
Faidley 12
have any assignments that they can work on. If students dont have any homework they can go
to a basket that I have next to my desk labeled, Finished Early? This basket will include
worksheets that the students can use to practice working on some skills such as writing. These
worksheets may include copying and finishing sentence frames among other options. Students
may also free write or read a book that is at their level. These activities will be less likely to
distract students neighbor and can all be done quietly.
Dismissal for recess, lunch specials, & end of the day :
For dismissal at the end of the day the students will know that I dismiss them and not
the bell. I will also tell students that their chairs need to be placed on their desks and that large
scraps of paper need to be picked up and thrown away before anyone can leave. Dismissal for
recess, lunch and specials will be similar. I will again remind students that I dismiss them and
not the bell. Students will be given a two minute reminder to clean up what they are working
on before the next transition. Students will then quietly line up without talking. From the first
day of school I will work on these transitions with students. For these procedures if needed I
will implement the three techniques for teaching procedures: Teach, rehearse, and reinforce
(Wong & Wong, 2009).
Bathroom Procedures:
walking back and forth from their desks to get a drink of water. If students dont have a water
bottle they will be able to get a drink from the water fountain whenever they want unless its
during instruction time. If I see students abusing this privilege to avoid working on school work
I will move their clip down and discuss why its a problem to get multiple drinks during class
time.
Differentiation Policy
Being able to provide differentiation to my classroom is extremely important to me.
Along with providing differentiation to my gifted and challenged learners it is important that I
dont leave out the students who dont understand directions or tasks. I will assist these
students similar to how I would assist challenged learners. I will make sure that my directions
and tasks are very clear. As a kindergarten
teacher I will keep my directions very short,
brief and to the point. I will also repeat my
directions in case a student couldnt hear it the
first time. Along with repeating my directions I
will say my directions or instructions in
multiple ways so students have more of a
chance to follow along with what Im saying.
Labels and cards with pictures will be used
whenever possible to help students who dont
understand directions or tasks.
11
Gifted Students:
There are multiple ways that I will
provide differentiation to my gifted students. One of the best ways to provide differentiation
to my excelled learners is by grouping. I may have 3-4 students who placed in a like-ability
group. These students will not be given more work but questions or problems that challenge
their thinking and extend their learning. Along with questions that challenge their thinking
students of high ability will be given projects to work on that may extend past the common core
standards for their grade. These projects will be chosen off of students interests and relate to a
current unit that the rest of the class is working on. Students of high ability will also be placed
together during math and reading lessons. By placing the top scoring students in math and
science together for my small group lessons I will be able to teach the students at a faster pace.
Also, having all of the students on the same page allows me to eliminate the drill and practice
that I may have to use with other students. In addition to grouping within the classroom I will
be on the lookout for students who would benefit from pull-out enrichment programs such as
Faidley 14
TAG. After getting to know my students I will be better able to provide them with the
differentiation that they need to extend their thinking.
Challenged Learners:
Just like the differentiation provided for my gifted learners there are multiple ways that
I will provide differentiation to my challenged learners. The same grouping that is applied for
the gifted students in math and reading will be applied to the challenged learners. The lower
performing students in math and reading will be in the same small groups. With these like
ability groups I will be able to re-teach or review information that these students need. It is
important to remember that these students are not stuck in their groups. If their reading or
math scores improve they will be moved to the next higher ability group. Along with like-ability
groups I will also have students with a different range of abilities work together. I believe with
some assignments students of low ability will benefit from working with students of high ability.
I will also be on the lookout for the struggling students who need specialized teachers in certain
subject areas. As always once I get to know my students I will be better able to provide the
differentiation that they need.
Parental Involvement
As a teacher I think communication with my students parents is extremely important
especially since my students are in kindergarten. As a kindergarten teacher the first
communication I want to have with my students parents is a planned home visit. At these
home visits I plan to meet my student and their parents/caregivers. During this visit I will bring
three letters. One letter is to inform the parents of school materials needed along with my
expectations for the child. The other letter will be about me and things that I like to do that the
students can relate to: favorite foods, movies, trips etc. I will also leave a blank letter so that
the student can fill it out with their family about themselves. Once filled out these letters will
be posted on a bulletin board in the classroom with an attached picture of the student so all
classmates can get to know each other. Meeting the parents at their home allows them to see
how much I want to get to know them and their child and help their student succeed. Having a
relationship with the parents or caregivers benefits the child. If the parent knows me and trusts
me they will work with me to help their child learn and grow to the childs maximum ability.
Along with an in home visit I plan to communicate with my students parents regularly. I
think regular communication with the parents is important. Forming a connection with the
parents by communicating with them on a regular basis will sharing information with them
about their child easier.
Faidley 15
Parent conferences are also very important to me because this will be a time I can talk
directly to a students parents or guardians. Students work and grades will be shared during
this time. I think parents teachers conferences will be a good time to share positive work as
well as to discuss a plan for things that arent going quite as well. However, if a student has a
problem in my classroom such as poor grades or behavioral issues the parent or caregiver will
not be hearing about these issues for the first time during the parent teacher conference. As I
said above I think parent communication will be huge and it is important to be talking to
parents and sharing information about their child throughout the whole year and not just at
parent teacher conferences.
