1. Find an equation for the parabola whose axis of symmetry is x = 1, and passing through
the points (3, 2) and (2, 3).

7. Given the hyperbola 4y 2 x2 + 8y 32 = 0.
(a) Sketch the hyperbola and determine its foci, vertices and equation of the asymptotes.
(b) Find the eccentricity.
(c) Find an equation of the ellipse whose major and minor axes coincide with the transverse and conjugate axis of the given hyperbola.

conjugate axis are the latus rectum and the vertex of the parabola. Sketch the
hyperbola. Label the center, vertices and foci.
15. Use the Focus-Directrix Equation for the following problems.
(a) The vertices of a hyperbola are 4 units apart while the foci are 6 units apart. If a
point P on the hyperbola is 25 units away from the nearest directrix, how far away
is P from the nearest focus?
(b) The vertices of an ellipse are 5 units apart while the foci are 2 units apart. If a point
P on the hyperbola is 12 units away from the nearest directrix, how far away is P
from the nearest focus?
(c) Find the focus-directrix equation and the standard equation of the conic with a focus
at F (1, 2) and corresponding directrix D : x = 1 if its eccentricity is
(i) e = 1

(ii) e = 1/2

(iii) e = 2
