SELECT LICENSE - STANDALONE WORKSTATIONS (NODE LOCKED)

There are 2 options for licensing Bentley applications: Standalone or Networked workstations.
Standalone workstation - computer system that requires an XML license file to be imported into
License Management Tool in order to license installed applications. The XML file is checked out
against a Bentley Hosted or User Deployed SELECTserver account.
Networked workstation - computer system that is connected temporarily / permanently to a Bentley
Hosted or User Deployed Server on a network. While connected, license can be checked in /out as
required from a pool of available licenses on the contract.
All license management questions/modifications are handled by the Bentley License team and
Account Managers not AutoPIPE TSG. Your account manager can also assist with application
pricing.

SELECT LICENSE - STANDALONE WORKSTATIONS (NODE LOCKED)

OVERVIEW
An internet / network connection is not required to authenticate the license used by AutoPIPE V8i.
In order to use the application beyond Demo mode, requires a valid SELECT license file (*.XML)

locked to a specific computer and cannot be moved. If the license needs to be moved, contact
person who provide the XML file for a updated file.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Install AutoPIPE per above procedure.
2. Acquire a valid Bentley SELECT license file (*.xml) from your Bentley On-site Admin,
hosted server, deployed server, Bentley License Team, or Account Manager. Prior to getting
an XML file, user may need to provide a computer name where the application is to be
installed.
3. Copy the license file in your hard disk. Go to Start > Programs > Bentley Engineering>
AutoPIPE > License Management Tool as shown below, OR Start AutoPIPE, select Tools>

On some Windows Vista and Windows 7 machines, it is observed that trying to select a different
installation path can crash or hang the installer. It is caused by some compatibility issues between
InstallSheild script and Windows Vista/7 in certain configurations. Please follow steps mentioned
below to resolve this issue.
1. Platforms supported: Windows 7 Professional or higher (application will not function
correctly on other version of windows).
2. Install to the default locations (do not select a different installation drive location, known issue
to crash the installer).
3. Modify Setup Properties: Compatibility mode.

5-2

Download AutoPIPE V8i to your local computer hard drive.

Log on with admin privileges.

Go to this folder, it contains extracted setup files:

C:\BentleyDownloads\ap09020107en\09020107en\product\install (file path name may
change with AutoPIPE version but the procedure remains correct).

Right click on Setup.exe and select Properties.

In the compatibility tab. Select the option Run this program in compatibility mode for and
select Windows XP SP2 as shown below. Click OK to close this dialog.

Try the installation process again.

5. Error occurs when installing: Unhandled Exception Error number 0x80040707:

If you're getting this error message as part of an installation or upgrade routine, here's one of
the easiest ways to circumvent the problem:

Go to the directory that holds the file for launching the installation (for example,
Setup.exe).

Right-click on the installation file and select Run As.

Uncheck the box that says Protect My Computer And Data From Unauthorized Activity,
and click OK button.

Alternatively, if you're running this installation from a CD, you may need to simply clean

5. IEG security service is not working through a Proxy server.

ISSUE: If I run IEG Service on a command mode everything works fine but when it runs as a
service it does not dispense a license.
Another observation is if the License management tool shows the license is available but can
only be used if manually checked out but not if connected to the server.
SOLUTION: The program can work by manually checking out a license by pressing the
Checkout button. Provide email address, and version number being checked out (In AutoPIPE

LICENSING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

LICENSING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

What is Product Activation?
Product activation is the act of authenticating a product for entitled use. V8i Edition
applications are equipped, by default, with three behavioral states Trial, Activated, and
Deactivated.
The Trial period begins with installation and ends after the trial period license has expired
or with Activation, whichever comes first. During the Trial period, most applications run
in full-functioning mode, with no limitations applied to their activated state. Some
applications like AutoPIPE do not have a trial period available.
Note

A standalone evaluation or node lock license can be requested from the sales
team.

An application is activated when it is licensed, which is most commonly achieved by

connecting to a valid SELECTserver. An application can return to Trial mode if its
licensing server cannot be found.
An application will reach its Deactivated state only when the Trial period has lapsed and
the product has not been activated. In its Deactivated state, an application generally runs
for a short period of time and then stops e.g. Microstation however applications like
AutoPIPE run in a DEMO mode (20 node limit).
Do node locked licenses have to check into the Bentley hosted licensing server every 30 days?
No. Non-SELECT, permanent licenses are essentially checked-out licenses tied to a
particular machine name and carry an indefinite term.
What is a Pooled License?
A pooled license is a floating license, centrally managed by SELECTserver. A desktop
application can draw its license from a SELECTserver pool of licenses located at the
SELECT site. A pooled license is not permanently tied to an individual computer. This
license type is available for MicroStation-based and stand-alone (non-MicroStation)
applications. A pooled license is the most common type of license among SELECT
accounts and is a major benefit of Bentley SELECT. Pooled licenses have a term that
coincides with the renewal date of the SELECT Agreement.

TROUBLESHOOTING
LICENSING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

How does it work if we have 21 licenses and 30 users?

The pooled behavior works essentially the same as it does now. You can have apps
installed on as many machines as you wish and you have a "usage count" in the license
file (called a "Site" on SELECT server). There's a slight difference in the "handshake"
between the client and the license server, though, in the new SELECT Server (SS) using
IEG security. In your existing SS, the handshake is based on a license request from the
client application and a corresponding license grant by the server. If successful, the client
will emit a "heartbeat" as long as the session is open. This is how SS determines that the
license is still in use and how it calculates and records the session time ("usage"). The
problem with this model is that it requires this real-time connection to the license server
and puts it in a precarious, mission-critical position. If this connection is broken or not
available, users cannot get their applications to run. In SS with IEG Security, the model
is similar except the license will remain with the open application for up to 48hrs even if
disconnected from the server. If the application closes the license returns to the server
pool. The client runs the application and records usage locally. When a daily connection
is made with SS, the client posts its own usage log, essentially saying "this is what I
used", including the app, version, and duration (Usages are tracked by machineID on an
hourly basis).
Note

The license can be checked out to the client for up to 90 days or longer using the
License Management Tool.

Why do I need SELECTserver?

SELECTserver is the exclusive enabler of several incremental SELECT licensing
benefits, including the pooling of desktop licenses.
Does my SELECTserver need to be connected to the Internet?
Yes, we recommend that SELECTserver Edition has access to the Internet. This will
make routine transactions, like transmitting usage reports and downloading updated
license files, much more convenient. All transactions are performed under HTTPS
protocol, so no proprietary information will be compromised.
If a SELECTserver cannot maintain an Internet connection, it should be connected at least
once per month to retain its activation. If a SELECTserver can never be connected, all
license and usage report transactions will need to be performed manually.
What happens to my checked-out license if I lose my laptop?
SELECTserver admin pages provide a way to backup checked-out licenses, so they can
be retrieved and copied back to the client machine if necessary. In extreme cases, the
System Administrator can revoke a checked-out license and return it to the pool.

TROUBLESHOOTING
LICENSING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
What is the SELECTserver Gateway?
SELECTserver can manage V8i Edition products and pre-XM applications, such as
MicroStation V8 2004 Edition or MicroStation/J. For the latter, SELECTserver provides
a gateway as a proxy for the current SELECTserver. It allows pre-V8i applications to
communicate with the new SELECTserver. In fact, SELECTserver Edition can extend
several benefits of the new system to existing applications, including the thirty-day
evaluation mode, extended periods for checked out licenses, and the reliability of a
system built on standard Web-based server technology.
Will my SELECTserver operate in a proxy server environment?
Yes, SELECTserver will work in a proxy server environment in several ways. First, V8i
applications will be able to communicate to SELECTserver via a proxy server.
SELECTservers will also be able to communicate with Bentley.com Web services via a
proxy server. Finally, SELECTserver Gateway will be able to communicate with
SELECTservers via proxy servers.
Can I obtain a fail-over license to prevent against catastrophe?
There will be no need to replace redundant licenses that have been issued for the purposes
of fail-over or redundancy. SELECTserver Edition is built on standard Microsoft
technologies that are well-suited for clustering or other techniques used to safeguard
application servers. In addition, SELECTserver is no longer a real-time license server, so
if a connection is lost, licensed applications are still able to run in full-functioning model.
How is pooled usage defined?
SELECT subscriber entitlement of pooled usage of Bentley desktop applications is
defined in the Bentley SELECT Agreement (2004). SELECTserver reports usage based
on 1-hour intervals.
What if I dont want to manage my own licenses?
Bentley will offer a hosted license service, based primarily on SELECTserver Edition and
offering essentially the same services that a deployed SELECTserver offers.

TROUBLESHOOTING
LICENSING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

I have lost my Network Server connection, can I still run the program if I have not checked
out a license?
SELECTserver is no longer a real-time license server, so if a connection is lost, trust
licensed applications are still able to run in full-functioning mode. However, applications
that require Bentley IEG do not support trust licensing (i.e. AutoPIPE, Ram, STAAD,
etc..). If the connection was lost while you were using the application, you have a 48 hour
grace period. If you were not using the application when the connection was lost, you will
not be able to use the application beyond Demo mode.
The reason is that AutoPIPE needs to check out a license from an available pool. If there
is no license currently available, then the application will revert to Demo mode.
Go to Start | Programs | Bentley Engineering | AutoPIPE V8i Select Series | License
Management Tool as shown below:

OR
On the License checkout tab, check the Expiration date in the bottom window pane shows
48hrs from the current date then continuing running or restart the program.

LICENSING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Why do I receive a system error regarding IEGLicLib.dll when attempting to open

AutoPIPE?

The error indicates that a dependency called the Bentley IEG License Service is not
installed. AutoPIPE cannot obtain licenses without it. Install the component to resolve the
error. It is listed as a dependency for AutoPIPE on Bentleys Software Downloads page
and can be downloaded from there.

TROUBLESHOOTING
LICENSING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Why do I receive a trial period message when opening AutoPIPE?

The message indicates that a license could not be retrieved. This can happen for a number
of reasons:
1.

SELECTserver license settings have not yet been configured on this computer.
Refer to Chapter 3: License Setup Guide for further instructions.

2.

The wrong edition was chosen on the Welcome screen. For example, an
AutoPIPE Plus license cannot open AutoPIPE Standard or AutoPIPE Nuclear.

3.

The right edition was chosen, but no license is currently available. To check the
availability of licenses, launch the License Management Tool by selecting from
the Windows Start menu:
All Programs > Bentley Engineering > AutoPIPE > License Management
Tool.
In the License Management Tool, click the License Checkout tab. A screen
with two panes will appear. The top pane shows licenses that are currently
available. The AutoPIPE license of interest must have at least one license
available.

Why do I receive a Missing Shortcut error when attempting to open the License
Management Tool in the Windows Start menu or the AutoPIPE folder on the desktop?

AutoPIPE Quick Start Guide

5-13

TROUBLESHOOTING
LICENSING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

When AutoPIPE is installed, it creates a shortcut to the License Management Tool, a

component installed by the Bentley IEG License Service. If a version of the Bentley IEG
License Service is not already installed, the shortcut will not be created properly. To
prevent this from happening, install the Bentley IEG License Service before installing
AutoPIPE.
To correct the broken shortcut, right-click on it, and select Properties from the context
menu. Set the Target field to the following value if running a 32-bit version of Windows:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Bentley Shared\IEG\
IEGLCS\LicenseTool.exe
If running a 64-bit version of Windows, use the following value:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Bentley
Shared\IEG\IEGLCS\LicenseTool.exe
Click OK to save the changes.
I encounter an error when attempting to install a localized version of AutoPIPE in my
language. What do I do?
As a trouble-shooting step, attempt to install the English version of AutoPIPE. This will
help our technical support team determine whether the problem affects all localizations of
AutoPIPE or a specific localized version only. Be sure to share the results of this test
when requesting support.
Why does AutoPIPE give a status of Trial expires in x day(s) on the Activation Status tab
of the License Management Tool even though my license is current?

5-14

AutoPIPE Quick Start Guide

TROUBLESHOOTING
FEATURES OF THE IEG SECURITY

Because of the way AutoPIPE retrieves licenses, the activation status for AutoPIPE
licenses will show as a trial period when not currently in use. Otherwise, the status will
show as checked out for a period of two days. Consequently, the activation status for
AutoPIPE (or any other product that utilizes the Bentley IEG License Service) may be
safely ignored.

FEATURES OF THE IEG SECURITY

After the application is opened, the IEG service will try to renew the license every 48 hours.
A heartbeat will be established in the application (i.e., AutoPIPE will query the availability of the
license every three minutes to make sure it was not checked back in or lost). If the connection to
the license server has been lost while the application was in use, after 48 hours the program will
convert to DEMO mode.

TROUBLESHOOTING
FEATURES OF THE IEG SECURITY

FORCED SYNCHRONIZATION
Normal open and close of an application A license will be checked out from the server as soon as
the application starts and will be checked back in as soon as it closes.
Abnormal shutdown of the application: - IEG Service always keeps track of the status of the
application so even if there is an abnormal shutdown, the license will be returned.
Normal / Abnormal shutdown but server is not available for check in - Service will keep track of
the unchecked license and will return when the connection is available.
Minimum checkout period for commuter licenses is 24hrs.
Expiration date is based on the time zone of the hosted server.
As the IEG service is always checking out a license from the server the usage log information is
always saved to the hosted server.
