Workshop Description
A growing demand over time and continuous consumption
seem to be behind the idea of seeking other gas and oil resources in deep and tight reservoirs. Exploration and development activities have increased in the last few years to cover
the Middle Easts requirement of hydrocarbons, which is highly
anticipated to be one of the most attractive and technically
challenging areas.
The Third EAGE/AAPG Workshop on Tight Reservoirs in the
Middle East will reap the fruits of the success from the first
two workshops in addition to strengthening cooperation between EAGE and AAPG to develop a series of multi-disciplined
gatherings dedicated to understanding, completing and producing from tight clastics and carbonate reservoirs.
Our key objective is to meet worldwide experts from different
disciplines, (geology, geophysics, petrophysics, engineering), in
the oil industry in order to share their knowledge and experience to identify potential challenges, solutions and the best
practices applicable to the region to unlock tight reservoirs;
this will be supported by presentations of successful case studies and the sharing of lessons learned through technical discussions, communication and networking.
This workshop targets economic planners, technical experts
and decision makers with experience in exploring and developing tight oil and gas reservoirs and who are working in
national, international, operational and service companies as
well as in academic and research institutions.

Third EAGE/AAPG Workshop on Tight Reservoirs in the Middle East

Day 1 Course
Date:
Sunday 4 October 2014, 08:00 17:00 hrs
Title:
Introduction to Hydraulic Fracturing
Instructor: Dr. Tony Martin, Director, Offshore Stimulation,
Baker Hughes
Hydraulic fracturing has become the completion method of
choice in many parts of the world and is now the single largest sector of the upstream oil and gas industry, after offshore
drilling. This often highly complex process has enabled many
so-called uneconomic oil and gas resources to be successfully
exploited commercially.
The discipline itself combines elements from mechanical engineering, thermodynamics, chemistry, geology, fluid mechanics,
petroleum engineering, fracture mechanics, pressure transient
analysis, heat transfer, stress analysis, computer simulation and
rock mechanics. This makes it one of the most interesting and
engaging of all the various oil and gas extraction processes for
an engineer to be involved in.
This short course is intended as an introduction to the art and
science of hydraulic fracturingthe processes, involved candidate selection, treatment design and post-treatment evaluation. It will also focus on two of the most active and innovative
areas within hydraulic fracturingunconventional gas and
multi-stage horizontal wells.
The course is intended for people with an oil industry technical
background, who wish to acquire a working knowledge of the
processes involved in hydraulic fracturing, as well as the use of
hydraulic fracturing for the extraction of tight and unconventional gas.

About the Instructor

Tony Martin graduated from Imperial College, London, in
1990 with an Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering and
a Masters Degree in Petroleum Engineering. Tony is currently
Baker Hughes Reservoir Development Services Director for
Integrated Stimulation Expertise, for the Europe-Africa-RussiaCaspian Region He is also a Baker Hughes Subject Matter Expert in Hydraulic Fracturing and Stimulation.

R&D Panel Session

Venue & Accommodation

Date:
Tuesday 6 October 2015, 08:30 10:00 hrs
Location: Al Nojoom Ballroom
Production of tight reservoirs would have been impossible
without the groundbreaking innovations in drilling and stimulation technology. With each new resource play, new challenges need to be addressed which do range from exploration,
appraisal and pilot stages to the rationalization of factory
drilling. It has become vitally important for the industry to put
even more focus on R&D to develop knowledge, technology
and innovation that can deliver a sustainable competitive advantage and open new frontiers.
The objective of this panel session of R&D leaders from NOCs,
IOCs, service companies and consultants in the region is to
share their vision, best practices and success stories for a sustainable competitive advantage and to open new frontiers on
the production of tight reservoirs.
Format: 10 minutes presentation per panelist followed by
round table discussion and audience questions.
