Industry-leading mononitrobenzene (MNB)/

aniline production
Key benefits include high yields, constant high-purity product, elimination of the sulfuric acid concentration system, and high on-stream time.

uring its 60-year history of

mononitrobenzene (MNB)/aniline
production, DuPont has continuously
refined and optimized the process
technology of this offering, particularly
in the areas of process yields, energy
consumption, waste minimization, product
quality and high operating efficiency.
Major uses of product grade aniline
include polyurethane manufacture,
rubber chemicals, dyes and pigments,
agrochemicals, and specialty fibers.
Benzene is nitrated with mixed acid
(nitric and sulfuric) at high efficiency to
produce MNB. The unique dehydrating
nitration (DHN) system uses an inert gas
to remove the water of nitration from the
reaction mixture, thus eliminating the
energy-intensive and high cost sulfuric
acid concentration system. As the inert gas
passes through the system, it becomes humidified and carries the water of reaction
with it. Most of the energy required for the
gas humidification comes from the heat of
nitration. The operation and maintenance
problems associated with a sulfuric acid
concentration system such as acid mist
formation is minimized.

Key benefits include:

QQ High

yields consistently 98%

efficiency.

QQ Constant

high-purity product
Aniline maintains its purity without
having a drop-off in quality.

QQ Sulfuric

acid concentration system

eliminated Comparable energy
efficiency and uses less processing
equipment.

QQ Simple

MNB hydration system

Efficient, simple, compact, and
provides good catalyst live.

QQ Low

environmental emissions The

process includes waste minimization
features. The process is designed to
meet and exceed the most stringent
environmental regulations.

QQ High

on-stream time By avoiding

a sulfuric acid concentration step, onstream time is improved.

QQ Superior

technical support
Unmatched operating and
engineering resources that assure
a quality process from engineering
through commissioning and start-up.
