actual story being
animated and read
through an ipad app.
At the end of the
story, students can
create their own rock
carving which
represents them,
similar to the
protagonist, who
draws significant
events in his life on
rocks. Students get
an understanding of
the difference in
storytelling in
Aboriginal culture to
how they would do it
now.

in which the animals

have been placed
starting at different
places. More or less
animals can be added
or taken away
depending on how
the students are
performing. The
pictures of the
animals also come
with information and
facts about that
animal which can be
revised with the
students.
Description:
This activity can span
a few lessons.
Initially, the animated
video story of Why
Koala has a stumpy
tail will be played for
the students. This
can lead to general
discussion about the
social lessons learnt
from the video.
Subsequently,
students can
participate in a play
where they will be
given a character
from the video and a
script to read from.
Students can also
create a mask of their
character from the
play as well as
creating props for a
final performance.
Description:
This activity involves
decorating and
creating Aboriginal
Clapsticks using a
paper template and
textas. Students may
also perform a
musical item together

as a class.

Critical justification of this resource drawing upon weekly readings and

elaborating on the educative and/or pedagogical value of the resource and
any limitations. (200 words)
The interactive iPad story Ngurrara: a Ngarluma story is my selected resource for
a number of reasons. Firstly, the story being told is set out in an engaging and
interactive format which requires students to click on the text to hear it read. It also
allows students to read the story at their own speed or re-read parts that they might
have missed or misunderstood. The story being told is also interesting as it would not
be familiar to most students and therefore it would be a new experience. The end of
the story leads into a post-story activity which involves students drawing their own
rock stories. This would serve to further engage the students in a unique activity as
well as allowing them to relate the Aboriginal story back to themselves in a way. This
whole activity is also quite good for independent work as the story and activity follow
each other on the same device. Using the iPad to deliver this story is clever and
unique and would encourage students to search for other such educative
experiences. However, the mode of delivery of this activity might serve as a problem
to most classes as iPads would not be that easily available.
