Earthquakes

Line5

20

For centuries, people have wondered at the power and strength of earthquakes. However, it
was difficult to measure their strength. If everything is shaking, how can you tell how much it
is shaking?
A scientist named Chang Heng found an answer in the year A.D. 132. He hung a heavy
piece of metal from a line to make a pendulum. He found that a heavy pendulum would shake
less than the surrounding ground. He used this principle to create an instrument that could
detect earthquakes. He designed a large bronze container with a domed lid to cover it,
resembling a water jar. On the outside of the container, near the top, were eight dragon heads,
each of whose mouths held a ball. At the bottom of the container sat eight corresponding
frogs with their mouths open, looking upward.
Hanging inside the container was a pendulum. When the ground shook from an earthquake,
the container would move more than the pendulum. The shaking would cause the mouth of at
least one of the dragons to open, and a ball would fall out and drop into the mouth of the frog
sitting underneath. This instrument was so sensitive that it could detect earthquakes that
people could not feel.
It was not until 1856 that a more sophisticated earthquake recorder was invented. It was
built by Luigi Palmieri in Italy. His invention, called a seismometer, has two parts: one part
detects earthquakes and the other records their size and duration on a long strip of paper.
Today we have even more sophisticated methods for measuring earthquakes. Many
earthquake stations place several seismometers in deep holes. The information is sent back to
the station by radio signals or telephone lines. Still, all seismometers work on the principle
that was developed by Chang Heng back in A.D. 132.

I will never forget the first time I went to a professional football match. It was my
favorite team, FC Barcelona, against Real Madrid in Madrid. I arrived at the stadium
wearing a red-and-blue-striped shirt with a matching scarf. Red and blue are the colors
of the Barcelona team.
At my seat, the people looked at me as if I was strange. Far away, on the other side of
the stadium, there was a small group of people wearing red-and-blue-striped shirts. My
heart sank. I had bought a ticket for the wrong section of the stadium! I was completely
surrounded by Real Madrid fans.
When the game finally started, most of the crowd forgot about me. Then the worst
thing happened: Real Madrid scored a goal. Everyone shouted and sang! A huge man
grabbed my scarf and ran up and down the steps swinging it over his head. That amused
the Real Madrid supporters very much. They all were laughing aloud. Then someone took
the scarf from the man, and I never saw it again.
In the second half, Barcelona scored. Everyone around me quieted down. Minutes later,
Barcelona scored again. The Barcelona supporters on the far side of the stadium cheered.
I stayed calm.
FC Barcelona won the game. I watched as the disappointed Real supporters left the
stadium. Suddenly, the big man who had taken my scarf came over and said: You are
a good sport. Here. He handed me his Real Madrid scarf and walked away. It was old

The small Scandinavian nation of Iceland has the highest percentage of Internet users in
the world. The chart above shows the results of a poll that was conducted in 2002. The poll
showed that almost 70 percent of Icelands homes had Internet access.
The average Icelander spends five hours per week on-line and frequently uses the
Internet to shop, bank, and send e-mail. Iceland, along with its Scandinavian neighbors
Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, is also one of the top users of mobile phones.
Why does Iceland have such a high level of Internet use? One reason is that the
government has given a great deal of support to computer technology. In 1996, laws were
passed giving money to Internet-based companies and paying for computers to be placed in
Icelands schools. We are a very small and isolated country, explained Prime Minister
David Oddsson. So to be prosperous, we must be connected to the world.

I want to express my support for the first annual Olympic Day that was held at my
school last week. The day was a fun event as well as a learning experience. There were
many activities. Students got a chance to compete in a variety of sporting events. Some
were individual sports like running, while others were team sports like basketball. We
also had a chance to watch demonstrations of different sports and learn new skills.
Olympic Day was supported by local businesses. Some companies donated medals, and
others donated food and drinks. Both parents and the public were invited to watch the events
and cheer for the students. The enthusiasm of the students was clear. I think everyone in the
school and the community enjoyed the day.
You may think that all of the preparation for the sports events took away valuable time
from academic study. It is true that students trained many weeks to prepare for the events,
but as we trained, we also focused on our academic studies. One of the rules for participation
in Olympic Day was that we had to do well in our academic classes. If we did not, we would
not have been allowed to participate in the sports events. Because of this rule, many students
actually improved in their subjects.
To sum up, Olympic Day was a great success. I would like to urge other schools to add
an Olympic Day to their schedules. Students continued to study while practicing sports.
We trained our minds and bodies. This is a great way to promote both academic and physical
education.

Although they are called shooting stars, the bright lines of light you sometimes see
in the night sky are not really stars. They are small rocks traveling through space at high
speeds, many times faster than the fastest planes.
In fact, their very fast movement causes these rocks to shine like stars. When a rock
races along, unrestrained by the vacuum in outer space, and then enters Earths atmosphere, it
is suddenly slowed down by the thick atmospheric gases. Although Earths atmosphere
is not a solid mass, it makes a barrier that slows down the flying rock. Moving through
the atmosphere heats the rock, and it lights up.
The increase in the rocks temperature is caused by the friction against the thick gases
of the atmosphere. You can feel this effect by rubbing one hand against the other. Even when
your hands temperature is low, constant rubbing eventually warms up the two surfaces in
contact.
The rocks that light up as shooting stars are not a serious danger to people. Most of
them are so small that when they enter the atmosphere, they burn up and disappear long
before they reach Earths surface.

Would you like to display your artwork?
Would you like to spend a day with your family at Aladdins Kingdom?
If you answered yes to these questions, this is your lucky day!
Our student artists are one of our national treasures! Aladdins Kingdom is proud to
announce the Spring Exhibition of drawings and paintings produced by students. We are
looking for different types of artwork to display in the exhibition. We are very interested
in pictures of well-known local places and in illustrations of historic events or traditional
stories.
We must receive your artwork no later than February 28. For details about how to
submit your artwork and to find a nearby drop-off place where you can take your
artwork, call 4449564 or visit us at www.aladdinartwork.com.
If our group selects your artwork for the exhibit, your work will be displayed from
April 1 through April 29. In addition, you and your family will be our guests for a
fun-filled day at the Aladdins Kingdom entertainment park. You will be given a
delicious lunch at the Kingdom restaurant.
