Troubleshooting with Simulation
With intrinsic simulation features like pace control, component
color-coding and animation, designers can monitor the actual circuit
operation and find faults that may occur. This helps functionally
validate designs, a capability that no other CAD system can even
approach.

Thousands of Symbols in Modular Libraries

Automation Studio's libraries incorporate internationally recognized
graphics standards, including ISO, DIN, IEC, and JIC standards.
Each library displays component categories in a comprehensive
manner. Simply browse through the list, select then drag and drop
the component onto the schematic.

Make your Own Symbols, Components,

Templates, and Libraries
By using the standard components, the flexible drawing tools, and
the grouping function, you can create and customize your own
libraries and templates. For training, instructors can create libraries
that are specific to their application, thereby limiting the number of
components only to what is needed.

The Ideal Standalone Package for Easy and

Integrated Circuit Design
Most CAD systems are expensive, difficult to learn and use, and are designed to
support functions that are not adapted to schematic layout. Furthermore, most
existing solutions rely on "add-on" software that is used in conjunction
with other systems. Automation Studio is intuitive and is the affordable
application-oriented tool for integrators, OEMs, engineers, and instructors. All the
expected features of a schematic design package are available in a user-friendly
approach, shortening the learning curve and increasing productivity. With
Automation Studio, there is no need for additional editing software. It provides
component libraries, drawing tools, basic shapes and elements that allow you to
create special symbols of any complexity and to customize diagrams and project
templates. Automation Studio can be equally useful for sales people as well as
for engineers.

Dynamic and Realistic Simulation in Full Color

Automation Studio includes simulation capabilities that meet the requirements of
all the supported technologies. During simulation, components become animated
and lines are color-coded according to their states. Users can also precisely
monitor variable values, pressures, flows, and displacement values at any point
in a circuit simply by inserting measuring instruments or using the plotting
functions. The simulation pace can also be adjusted with functions such as
Normal, Step by Step, Slow Motion, and Pause.

Present Designs that Work

Automation Studio is perfect for preparing designs and quotes. Projects can be
presented to customers dynamically through simulation, proving concepts and
limiting risks during implementation and start-up.

Professional Printouts
The software allows printing to standard engineering sizes including ANSI A-E
and ISO A4-A0. Users can define title block contents, borders, map locators, bills
of materials, and schematic scaling factors.

Automation Studio is easy to use, economical, and adapts to your workflow. Its user interface
makes it easy to deploy and truly helps engineers and instructors implement solutions that
support the entire life cycle of any project.

... FOR INDUSTRIAL TRAINING AND ENGINEERING

BOM, Parts Catalog and Database Link
This feature makes it possible for you to generate project documentation. Users
can assign specific catalog data to each component, enter part numbers, prices,
descriptions, and all the technical data quickly and easily. They can
also customize and create reports. Furthermore, users can print or export
information to another application such as a spreadsheet, a word processor, or
an inventory system.

Multi-Document Projects
Automation Studio allows the creation of multi-document projects. This is
helpful when separating diagrams by functions and categories. During simulation,
all diagrams interact with each other. Users can also include other types of
documents such as Word, Excel, or any Windows-based application. This is
useful when adding notes and instructions to a project.

Communication to Controllers and Equipment via

OPC and CANBUS
To connect Automation Studio to the outside world, users can choose one of two
options: the I/O Interface kit or the OPC Client module. The Automation Studio
I/O Interface kit is a hardware solution that allows the user to connect 8 inputs
and 8 outputs directly into a PLC I/O or to real equipment such as relays,
contacts, valves, sensors, etc. The OPC Client is a standard software interface
that allows Automation Studio to exchange data with any device for which an
OPC server software is supplied by its manufacturer. OPC turns Automation
Studio into a versatile I/O simulator or a Soft-PLC. For mobile applications, the
use of an OPC - CANbus server can allow an interface between controllers and
Automaiton Studio.

Schematics
The Tool of Choice for all your Applications
Automation Studio was originally designed for the Fluid Power industry in 1986
when PneuSim and HydrauSim were developed. Since then, all the requirements
of users and new simulation technologies have been implemented in order to
fulfill the needs of pneumatic and hydraulic engineering.
Automation Studio is the only solution that implements such functions as
schematic design, simulation, and project documentation in a manner that makes
it the most useful software suite for system integrators, OEMs, instructors, and
industry professionals to conceptualize, design, and supply training on Fluid Power
systems and components.

Thousands of Symbols in a Comprehensive Library

The Pneumatic and Hydraulic libraries include
thousands of ISO 1219-1 compliant symbols
that will satisfy the requirements of most
applications. All components are available in a
structure that fluid power specialists are used
to working with.

Automation Studio automatically assigns internal identifiers that

conform to the ISO 1219-2 standard. The ID will automatically state the
installation number, circuit number, component code and unique identifier. The
identifiers can be renamed in any way you choose.

Component Properties and Catalog Information

For all components, users can assign real physical values such as diameters,
lengths, etc. To complement a design, users can also enter catalog descriptions,
attributes, and accessories belonging to a specific component. This is very
helpful when generating a complete projects bill of materials.

training or to spend time developing models. The models
are included for all supplied components and users only
need to determine a limited number of parameters. This
makes the software useful for a broader range of users
and eliminates the need for advanced training and
support.

Quick Simulation
After a circuit is completed, you can simply click on the
simulation start button to animate your circuit.

Simulation Parameter Setup

The default simulation parameters supplied with the
hydraulic and pneumatic components eliminate the need
to perform an initial setup. Just lay out the components
and start the simulation. For most components, users can
modify simulation parameters such as applied loads,
dimensions, and angles, as well as advanced parameters including internal
leakage, friction, etc. Calculated variables such as area and volume are
automatically displayed. To illustrate more complex concepts, users can modify
the simulation parameters and show different behavior including dynamic
friction, static force, etc. Wherever applicable, characteristic curves can be
entered to obtain a more realistic behavior of the system using numerical
interpolation.

Dynamic Parameter Tuning

Lines and piping can be sized in length and diameter to reflect the effect of
friction and pressure drops in the system. Adjustable flow control and regulator
values can be modified during simulation.

The hydraulic and pneumatic simulator is based on sound and reliable modeling techniques such
as Bernoullis law and gradient method. During simulation, and at any point in a circuit, users can
monitor pressures, flows, displacements, etc.

... FOR ENGINEERING AND TRAINING

automation project specification environment. It is the tool of choice for the implementation of
SFC control structures according to the IEC 61131-3 international standard for programmable
controllers programming languages.

SEQUENTIAL FUNCTION CHART ...

A Structured Approach and a Powerful Tool
Although the interface is simple, there is more depth to this module than meets
the eye. During the creation of SFCs, you can access all the internal
status variables and SFC control elements to implement fault management. SFCs
can also be Forced or Frozen during the simulation. Sequence and step
execution intervals can also be defined to increase fault management.
A higher hierarchy level can be exploited by defining macro steps from which
entire control structures can be used.

Make Reusable Control Structure Templates

With Automation Studio, you can create SFCs and save them as templates. This
helps generate libraries of reusable logic structures that are often found in
projects, and it also helps implement more rigorous rules in managing large projects.

The Benefits of Simulation

Design Automation Controls Faster
Sequential Function Chart (SFC) is rapidly becoming the method of choice to
design structured automation controls. With this module, Automation Studio
brings a new dimension to building projects easily and efficiently. SFC helps to
design sequences of operation quickly and to validate a project prior to
implementation. It complements project documentation by helping engineers,
customers, and maintenance personnel in understanding equipment operations.
Its worth noting that ISO1219-2 recommends the use of SFC for project
documentation. SFC also helps implementing air logic or electrical controls by
following simple and structured procedures.

A Specialized Editor
The SFC module of Automation Studio is more than a symbol library. It includes
special editing functions and features especially adapted to create Sequential
Function Charts. Combined with the schematic capture features, this
provides a user-friendly and efficient environment and helps users gain in
productivity. When a user selects an SFC document, a specialized tool bar
is accessible to quickly create SFC structures.

Grafcet Code Export Module

Automation Studio can import Grafcet code either in XML format or
generated by the CadepaTM software. This module allows users to export
Automation Studio Grafcet into:
1) Siemens S7 PLC format that can inturn be imported directly into
the Siemens programming software;
2) XML format that can be read by a device specific compiler and
further create virtually any type of machine code.

Process Control Monitoring

Using the Grafcet library and the OPC server allows users to monitor their
processes by animating the flowcharts steps, transitions and variables.

14

The SFC Simulation mode allows users to easily troubleshoot simple and
complex projects. With the ability to simultaneously simulate with other libraries
and modules of Automation Studio, I/Os can be directly simulated to test
the control logic.
Automation Studio becomes an indispensable tool to secure commissioning of
systems, assist in training personnel on operations, and improve the overall
quality of projects.

Application Monitoring and Supervision

By using the Automation Studio's OPC Client module, SFCs can be directly
animated by the PLCs that are operating, thereby allowing an accurate level
of supervision of applications and better troubleshooting whenever problems
do occur.

Whether you program PLCs, manage large projects or commission installations, Automation
Studios SFC module will help you in the entire workflow.

The PLC Ladder Logic and Digital Electronics libraries are perfect additions that complement
projects and increase the value of Automation Studio in both troubleshooting and training.

PLC LADDER LOGIC AND DIGITAL LIBRARIES

PLC Ladder Logic Library

PLC Training Made Simple

The PLC Ladder Logic library includes all the basic Ladder Logic functions such as
contacts, input/output, timers, counters, logic test, and mathematical. Using
Automation Studio to learn basic or advanced PLC controls is extremely easy as
users do not have to learn complex PLC programming environments, which are
not specifically designed for training. Combined with the other libraries, the
Ladder Logic library allows users to implement a complete virtual factory.

Automation Studio PLC libraries were originally designed with training in mind.
Users can build, simulate, and monitor a PLC Ladder Logic diagram without the
need of the cumbersome manufacturer interface. This allows the trainee to focus
on the logic and to learn principles instead of being slowed down by the tools.

Multiple Vendors Symbology

The PLC libraries include options for Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and IEC61131-3
symbols. Users can therefore choose the required module.

Digital Electronics Library

The Digital Electronics Library comes complete with standard devices including
inverters, logic gates, flip-flops, counters, shift registers, comparators, switches,
LEDs, 7-bar display, decoders, multiplexers, etc. Everything needed to teach basic
to complex logic is available.

A WORLDWIDE STANDARD FOR TRAINING

Training with Automation Studio
Automation Studio allows instructors to quickly draw circuits and perform demonstrations. By using schematics, help files, cut-away animations, and data monitoring, it
becomes an indispensable tool that helps to explain equipment and control operations from the component right up to the system level. Automation Studio makes it easy
to experiment with all types of systems, from basic to complex. As trainees advance, the simulation reinforces the understanding of the interaction between the various
electrical, automation, and fluid power technologies. Not only can they learn by observing the states of switches and components, but also by observing the color schemes
of symbols and using the variable plotting functions.

Seamless Synergy from Engineering to Training

While Automation Studios features are ideal for engineering, expanding the use of the package at the design stage makes it a tremendous time saver for elaborating
training material. Projects created at the engineering stage can readily be used for training purposes. Automation Studio will improve the workflow from engineering to

TESTIMONIALS
My main use of Automation Studio is to give training on hydraulic controls for paper machine
equipment. I find that the use of animated components and dynamic colors helps the students
truly understand the operation of each hydraulic circuit.
The new version 5 is a big step in making animations very close to the way things work in real
life. For me, this is the best tool available to demonstrate the physical properties of hydraulic
controls.

"Parker has been working with Famic for over seven years providing our training
customers with an interactive fluid power tool. More recently we have taken advantage of the
enhanced design capability of the new generation of Automation Studio. We look forward to
using the suite of Automation Studio products for training and design for many years to come."
John A. Miller, System Integration Manager
Automation & Hydraulics Groups
Parker Hannifin Corporation

"I Have been using Automation Studio for nine years. It is the best simulator for training and
design work.
Having a full suite of industrial motion control simulation resources at my finger tips helps my
clients see the big picture as well as the small details. I cant think of any other program that
does this so well.
I have been training industrial maintenance personnel for over four years now on topics in
hydraulics, pneumatics and PLCs. My trainees give Automation Studio top marks for helping
them understand their own factory systems."

"This easy to use software allows very fast creating pneumatic and hydraulic schematics.
The features bill of material, userdefined reports and the interface to existing product
catalogs make Automation Studio useful for industrial applications.

I became acquainted with Automation Studio about 7 years ago when I was instructing at
Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I needed something that I could use
in the classroom to draw basic circuits for the students. Since this program not only allowed
me to draw them, but to simulate them as well, it was the choice for the time. Since then, I
have seen several others on the market, but none seem to have all the bells and whistles that
this program has. One of our customers at SSCC saw a demonstration during a tour of our
facility, and liked the program so much that they purchased it for their plant and put all their
hydraulic systems on it. They installed it on the machine computers and use it for
troubleshooting and for making design changes in their circuits.
Here at AIDT, I am having it installed on student computers so that they can draw the
circuits that we build on our trainers. This allows them to try their circuits to see if they will
work before building them. We are also installing it in our Electro-Pneumatic lab where they
teach troubleshooting. We have had very good response from all who have used or viewed this
program.
Will Hadden, Instructor
Alabama Industrial Development Training at Mercedes Benz Institute
Alabama, USA
I have found that Automation Studio provides an excellent bridge from
theory to application. Students who use the software more readily develop the ability to build
real circuits and demonstrate the understanding of the theories behind the circuitry. It is a very
effective teaching tool and I would highly recommend it for the technical instructor.
David Hubbert, Program Chair
Industrial Maintenance Technology, Texas State Technical College
Brownwood, USA
...Here at Warwickshire College, I had it installed on student computers in our Applications
Centre so that they can draw the circuits that they build on our training rigs. This allows them
to try their circuits to see if they will work before building them. The simulated cut-away views
allow the student to see inside. This provides a positive feedback as well as reinforcement.
Then as the student advances, Automation Studio simulation software reinforces the circuitry
and interaction between the various electrical, pneumatics and hydraulic components. We find
Automation Studio an excellent teaching tool.
Paul Todd
Warkwickshire College, Leamington Spa Centre
Warwickshire, United Kingdom

Other nice features like simulation, dimensioning, interface to PLC, ect. supports the user in the
early project phase (layout of the schematic and testing). This makes sure, that the application
functions, before the machine or the application is assembled."

Automation Studio has been taught and used for about four years now in BEP Automated
Mechanical System Maintenance; this tool allows us to create diagrams with simulation in
order to prepare for the electrical wiring. The context sensitive help allows students to
personally look for component behaviors and wiring methods!

Rainer Kemmler, Dipl. Ing., Marketing

Bosch Rexroth AG.

This process allows to verify if the right choices were made in the creation of pneumatic and
electropneumatic systems. The fact that this software allows us to create circuits with a minimum error rate is a plus for students.

"Our company designs and manufactures eletro pneumatic products.

Jean Louis Poignant

Lyce Bernard Palissy, France

We have been using Automation Studio for several years in order to train our new technical
employees. One of the main purposes of the training is to better understand the actual
operation of pneumatic products and automation robots. Hence, Automation Studio helps our
employees increase their productivity and creativity.

Automation Studio is a good tool for designing circuits before the students build them in the
lab. The simulation capabilities will tell them if their circuit will work in the real world. It is also
much faster than for example AutoCad since most symbols are already there.

Since electric and pneumatic circuits can be easily created, our employees can test new designs
immediately using the simulation function in order to detect possible errors. Automation Studio
helps both the instructors and the trainees to achieve an important objective: shorten the
learning curve.

Dr. Jan Brink

Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Midwestern State University

We are thinking to introduce Automation Studio widely to all our customers and make them
benefit of its advantages not only for training but also for design."
