Read the translation of a poem about a Roman schoolmaster below and answer the
question that follows.
What have you to do with us, wicked schoolmaster, hated by boys and girls alike? The
crested cockerels have not yet broken the silence and you are already thundering on with
your cruel continuous roaring and beatings. Bronze echoes just as loudly as you when the
anvil is struck, and the shouting rages more gently in the amphitheatre when the supporters
cheer on the winning gladiator. We, the neighbours, do not ask to sleep all night. It is a small
matter to stay awake, but serious to stay awake all night. Dismiss your pupils. Are you willing
to receive as much to be quiet, chatterbox, as you do to shout?

Read the passage about a Roman villa below and answer the questions that follow.
The villa should be built on a little hill so that, when the rain comes pouring down the hillside,
the foundations wont be washed away. Inside the farm enclosure there should be a spring
and a clump of trees nearby to provide wood and fields in which to pasture the animals. If
there is no running water you should look for a well close by.

Read the speech below made by a British leader and answer the questions that follow.
Once each tribe had one king, now two are inflicted on us the governor to take out his
anger on our lives, the procurator on our property. The agents of one, his centurions, and
those of the other, his slaves, combine violence and insults against us. In war the braver
men take the spoils, but now it is cowards and weaklings that rob our homes, kidnap our
children and conscript our men.
But what a tiny handful of invaders they are, if only we count up our own numbers! The
Germans threw off their yoke and they had only a river, not the ocean to protect them. We
have our country, our wives and our parents to fight for. The Romans have nothing but greed
and extravagance. They will return home, as Julius Caesar returned home, if only we can
equal the bravery of our ancestors.
Tacitus: Agricola 15 (adapted and trans. M J Thorpe)

Roscius in maxima villa cum filio fideli habitabat. haec villa erat in parvo
oppido prope Romam. circum villam iacebant multae aliae villae minores,
Capitoni nuntiaret quid accidisset. postridie Capito filium Roscii parricidii
accusavit.
