Order of Precedence
Any conflict between the requirements of this specification, related contract documents,
national / international documents, codes, engineering practices shall be referred to the
COMPANY for clarification in writing. Should any conflict occur in the application of these
specifications, the order of precedence shall be as follow:
Iranian Petroleum Standard (IPS)
International Code and Standards
3.0 DESIGN SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
3.1 General
The basis of the design for piping scope shall generally involve activities pertaining to the
following:
Piping study for main plant.
Selection of piping classes based on related Project Specifications.
Data sheets for the specialty items and the valves.
Battery limits tie-ins and interconnection between the different systems.
Piping system shall be designed for the most severe conditions to which it may be
subjected. In addition to the general operating and process conditions, the surge pressure,
static pressure, pressure drop in the line, pump shut-off pressure, vacuum caused by
cooling and possible condensing of trapped medium and nitrogen purges pressure may
determine the design conditions.
3.2 Piping Engineering Requirements
3.2.1 General
Piping design work shall be carried out according to the following project documents:
SA00-EPXXXX-SDPI-SPMT-0001 Piping Material Specification
SA00-GENXXX-SDPS-BSDS-0001 Process Design Basis
Piping design within the battery limits of the Project shall be in accordance with ASME
B31.3.
Items to be considered during front-end engineering and design (FEED) include:
1)
Gas or liquid pockets are to be avoided if possible. Refer to applicable P&IDs notes for
the general process requirements.

2)
High point vents and low point drains shall be provided as required.
3)
All piping must be designed for thermal expansion under start-up, operating and
shutdown conditions without overstressing the piping, valves or equipment.
4)
Lines subject to blow down and those connected to rotating equipment shall be
identified and piping support shall be designed to avoid high loadings and vibration.
The stress analysis will be done in accordance with the Critical Line List.
5)
Aboveground piping shall be installed on sleeper way or on the pipe rack. Valves and
special fittings shall be located and accessible for the operation and maintenance
purposes. Ladders and access platforms shall be provided wherever required.
6)
Spectacle s blinds shall be provided on all vessel nozzles as required in the P&IDs.
Larger size blinds shall have hoisting facility or crane access made possible.
7)
Where provisions for future installation and connection of equipment are identified,
piping shall allow for block valves and to avoid shutdown and extensive modifications
of facilities.
8)
Underground piping shall be suitably coated in accordance with the applicable codes
and specifications. All piping to be run aboveground except for drain lines which may
run underground.
9)
The line class breaks shall be indicated clearly as required in the P&IDs.
10) The valve codes shall be consistent with the piping material specification.
11) All the valves shall be in accordance with the valve specifications.
12) Type of Branch Connections shall be based on respective material classes selected
from SA00-EPXXXX-SDPI-SPMT-0001 Piping Material Specification.
13) The pipe class identification shall be at proper locations.
14) H2S, Cl- and salt shall be taken into consideration for piping and valve materials
selection.
15) Pipe bending is not generally allowed, forged or wrought elbows shall be used.
3.2.2 Routing Study
1)
The work scope of piping routing study should be prepared for all pipes lines.
2)
Piping should be routed so as to have the short runs and minimize pipe supports whilst
providing sufficient flexibility for thermal expansion and contraction and mechanical
movement.

3)
Large bore piping shall be designed to minimize pressure drops small bore piping shall
be routed in groups where practical.
4)
On pipe racks consideration shall be given to space allocation for future extension.
5)
6)
Pipe routing shall allow sufficient space for bolting up flanges or for line-up clamps to
be used for field welds.
7)
Block valves in pipe work connected to equipment shall be installed as close to the
equipment as practicable.
8)
9)
All gases or vapors branches shall be taken from the top of the main lines.
10) At crossings, lines shall have a minimum clearance of 25mm after allowing for
insulation and deflection.
11) In multi-level pipe racks, pipe carrying corrosive fluids shall be on the lower level, and
utility lines should be at the upper floor. Large size or heavy weight pipes shall be
located at the lower level and on extreme sides.
3.2.3 Safety, Operability and Maintenance
Safety is the prime factor, and shall be considered in front-end engineering and design
(FEED) for this project. Sufficient access shall be provided for maintenance and operation
of valves and safe exit from the area during Emergency. Sufficient maintenance space shall
be provided to service equipment in-place or to remove the unit and components for offsite
repair.
The base of safety requirements in process plants is to avoid any hazard.
In this regard some distances and locations shall be considered. For example all process
equipment should be kept at least 15m from fired heaters, except where the heater is being
used to heat the process flow of the equipment and where any leakage from the equipment
is not ignitable. Fired heaters shall locate on the side of process unit from which the
prevailing wind blows. Control rooms and their roadways shall not be located in hazard
area.
3.2.4 Piping Design and Layout
Piping shall be arranged in an orderly manner and routed as directly as practical, preferably
in established sleeper ways or pipe rack.
The basis for the overall design of process and utility piping including the arrangement of

3.2.5 Stress Analysis
Formal stress analysis shall be carried out for all critical lines. Pipe stress analysis shall
meet the requirements of document SA00-EPXXXX-SDPI-SPDI-0002, Specification for
Piping Stress Analysis.
Piping systems shall have sufficient flexibility and adequately supported to prevent the
following:
Failure of piping or supports from overstress or fatigue
Detrimental stresses or distortion in piping and valves or in connected
equipment
Excessive thermal movement
Vibration
Piping systems shall be designed to take into account all different conditions expected
during their lifetime, start-up, shut down, short term excursions to higher temperatures or
pressure, normal operating. For this condition piping system shall have sufficient flexibility.
