Faith Lutheran Church ~ Rev. David Johnson, Pastor

From Pastor Dave's Desk...

Luke 20:24 24 Show me a denarius.
Whose image and inscription are on it?
Caesars, they replied.
Its back to school time again! Let the
parents begin the struggle to wake up their kids to
get them to school on time! This is the time of
year when students put on their new back-to-school
clothes to give, comb/brush their hair, and look as
good as they can to start the year off right.
Because as we all know, its not about the classes,
the books, or the lesson; its all about the image.
Id like to say that its only students who
are obsessed with image. I would like to say that
its only for the first day of school. However, this
is not the case. I once noticed a girl standing in
line to get a corn dog catch her reflection in the
sneeze guard (you know, that piece of glass that
they put up so that when you sneeze it doesnt get
all over the food) and proceeded to check out her
hair and make sure that it still looked good.
We are a culture that is obsessed with
image. In a lot of ways we determine who we are
by our image. Just on how we look we see
ourselves as fat, skinny, average, extraordinary,
muscular, weak, fit, geeky, nerdy, cool, lame, etc.
I could go on, but I am sure you get the picture.
And all of these labels that we give ourselves and
others are usually based on image. By looking at
peoples image we have a tendency to judge
someones self-worth and the type of person that
they are.
And we have a source that tells us the type

of image that we want to have. We have

television, movies, magazines, and ads telling us
that in order to be happy we need to be
someoneand that someone is the person that
they tell us to be. We are to be made into the
image of levis, plastic surgery, flat stomachs, sixpack abs, smart geeks, sportsbasically there is
a standard that we are to measure up to; an image
that we are supposed to have for ourselves, and
every single bit of it is something we will never
attain. And thats the point. We are supposed to
be so unhappy with who we are that we will
utilize the products or services of a company or
individual in order to strive to be something that
we can never really beat least not with
dramatic medical intervention.
This is why people starve themselves,
pursue plastic surgery, and will do anything to
become someone they are not because they have
been convinced that who they are is not good
enough. Image, after all, is everything. And
people wonder why the young people today have
trouble knowing who they are. I would argue its
because they have lost sight of the reality that
image is nothing; that what really matters is
whose image that they have been created in.
This goes for you and me as well.
Knowing who you are stems from
knowing that you are loved, created, and made in
the image of God to be you. You are not made
into the image that the world would tell you that
you are because that will always be something
that you can never attain; instead you are made in
the image of God who says that you are worth
more than life itself here and nowwithout
having to change a thing. Its this kind of love

From the Pastors Desk cont...

that opens my eyes to see that I have value and so do
those around me. Its this kind of love that opens my
eyes to see that I dont have to strive to be something
that I am not but to be the kind of person that God
created me to be. Its this kind of love that opens my
eyes to see Jesus who carries all the images and
people that this world has convinced me I should be
and buries them in the holes in His hands, His feet,
and His side.
I am made not in the image of this world but in Gods
imageand so are you.
dead and gone; its for the one who has wanted
nothing to do with God all his/her life and now is
faced with overwhelming fearwhat seems to be too
late for us is never too late for God.
In all these things and more that tell us its too
late; there is no way things can be made right; there is
nothing you can do, God is there to carry it with you,
bear it with you, and bring new life in the midst of
things that seem dead and gone. Even in this world
when things seem dead and buried, we carry with us
the hope that those things died with Jesus on the cross
and that through Jesus it can and will be raised to
new life. With God, its never too late.

In Gods Peace, Pastor Dave

Project Help Needed

Meet You at the Rock Vacation Bible School

2015 at National Mine Playground was a hit! Over
50 different kids attended the Thursday night
sessions over seven weeks; over two-thirds from
the community. Praise God!

We have two projects here at the church

that we need assistance with
(1) Sand and vanish the south doors by the
Bell Tower

With the theme, Meet You at the Rock, activities

were related to bible lessons that involve rocks in
some form; Moses and the Ten Commandments,
Moses commanding water from a rock, Joshua and
the fall of Jericho. The kids got to praise God with
songs like Build Your House upon a Rock; make
crafts like clear blue stone and angel necklaces; and
played games like Capture the Flag and launched
water balloons with a giant sling shot.

(2) Fix and/or replace the landscape

timbers by the east entrance
downstairs. If you can lead or assist
with one or both of these projects
please contact with Jeff Swanson.
Committee Liaisons

On the last Thursday, hot dogs and smores were

served and each child received a Bible.

The Church Council members serving as

Committee Liaisons for 2015:

Thank you all who helped plan, set up, participated

in the program, brought snacks, lead the crafts,
played the games, and cleaned up! It was amazing
how much help was provided to make this event
possible to the kids. Even the weather cooperated
with only the last session being a little cool. A
$250 Community Action Team grant was received
from Thrivent to pay for advertising, craft
materials, supplies, etc. Also Tilden Township
allowed the use of the playground facilities for no
charge.

We are so appreciative of all the help we received

and the kindness shown. The kids and adults had a
great time and learned that Jesus is our Rock!
Thank you again to all those who helped with this
ministry and thank you to all the kids who attended!
Hope to see you at Sunday School.

A Prayer for Courage

Lord God, you have called your
servants to ventures of which we
cannot see the ending, by paths
as yet untrodden, through perils
unknown. Give us faith to go out
with good courage, not knowing
where we go, but only that your
hand is leading us and your love
supporting us; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen - Lutheran Book of
Worship (Augsburg, 1978) reprinted 2012 pg. 28
