2.0 Composition / Information on Ingredients

The product is a solid piezoelectric ceramic component, whose composition is nominally Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3
(x= 0.4 0.6), with additives of 1 - 2% by weight of various alkaline, transition, and rare earth group
elements. It presents no immediate hazards. The product is coated with a fired-on silver electrode layer
(CAS No 7440-22-4), which varies in thickness between according to the design of the product; typically this
is between 5 and 15um.
However, dust created from machining operations not normally anticipated with the use of these
products may exhibit the hazards described below. Avoid creating and breathing / ingesting
airbourne dust.
3.0 Hazard Identification

EC No : 235-727-4
CAS No : 12626-81-2
REACH Registration No : 01-2119615559-31-0000
IUPAC Name : lead zirconate titanate
Type of substance : mono-constituent substance
Origin : organometallic
Heating above 800 degrees Celsius will result in the volatilisation of lead compounds from the
substance.
Potential Health Effects Eyes : can cause mechanical irritation. Particles embedded in the eyes can cause inflammation,
degeneration and discolouration of tissue.

Skin : repeated and prolonged exposure can cause irritation and dermatitis, mostly through
mechanical abrasion. The toxic metal constituents are present as complex mixtures of oxides and
are not generally released from the products or absorbed through skin.
Ingestion : ingested lead-containing dust can accumulate in the body and cause long-term damage
to the nervous system, brain and kidneys. Exposure to lead has been linked to reproductive
disorders and birth defects.
Chronic (long term) exposure to inhalable lead-containing dusts may cause health effects similar to
that seen for ingestion. Exposure to dust can cause respiratory irritation, and long-term inhalation of
dust can result in lung damage.

4.0 First-Aid Measures

EYE CONTACT : Wash with clean water. Seek medical attention if irritation continues
SKIN CONTACT : Wash with soap and clean water. Remove contaminated clothing and launder
before re-use.
INHALATION : No adverse effects requiring first aid are anticipated by this route of exposure.
Monitor symptoms and seek medical advice. In case of acute ingestion, induce vomiting and seek
medical attention.
INGESTION : In case of acute exposure, remove individual to fresh air and seek immediate medical
advice.

5.0 Fire Fighting Measures

The material poses no specific risk of fire and requires no special fire fighting measures. Use sand or dry
chemical to extinguish. Excessive heat (> 800 degrees Celsius) will result in the volatilisation of lead
compounds from the components, which are considered to be toxic and respiratory irritants, so use selfcontained breathing apparatus appropriate for the surrounding fire.
6.0 Accidental Release Measures
Vacuuming (the use of HEPA filters is recommended) is preferable to sweeping, if significant amounts of
dust are released. Avoid creating and breathing airbourne dust.
7.0 Handling and Storage
Store the components within the packaging provided and handle the components to prevent mechanical
damage to avoid the generation of any dust. Avoid creating and breathing airbourne dust. Do not use
compressed air to blow off dust.
The component material does not degrade from a chemical point and therefore has no shelf life for storage
purposes from that perspective.
8.0 Exposure Controls and Personal Protection

The use of electro-ceramic components should preclude any processes such as machining where
dust is created. If such processes are to be carried out, then suitable local exhaust ventilation
systems must be used and suitable dust masks (P3, APF x20 minimum) to prevent inhalation must
be worn.
Workplace Exposure Limit for PZT : 8hr TWA = 0.15mg/m3
Workplace Exposure Limit for silver : 8hr TWA = 0.1mg/m3

Do not smoke, eat or drink in areas where material dust is handled.

A high standard of personal hygiene must be exercised after handling the materials.
Avoid direct skin contact; protective clothing is required if lead exposure exceeds the WEL above.
Work clothing should be left at the work site and properly laundered or disposed of after use. Wash
water to be disposed of as hazardous waste according to local or national environmental regulations.
Wear safety glasses with side shields.

10.0 Stability and Reactivity

The components are insoluble in water and essentially inert.
11.0 Toxicological Information
PZT has the potential to be toxic to reproduction and is a CMR substance under REACH.
Inorganic lead compounds may be absorbed into the body by inhalation or ingestion. Excessive dust
inhalation and regular exposure to volatilised lead compounds could result in cumulative lead poisoning.
Refer to national and/or local regulations concerning the use of lead compounds, exposure monitoring and
health surveillance requirements.
12.0 Ecological Information
The material is inorganic in nature and would not be considered to be bio-degradable. Major spillage should
not be washed away but contained as powder (vacuumed up using suitably filtered equipment; HEPA filter
systems, for example) and removed for controlled disposal as hazardous waste. Lead can be toxic to aquatic
life. Lead causes nerve and behavioural effects in animal life and can bio-accumulate.
13.0 Disposal Considerations
The material has to be disposed of as hazardous waste. Refer to relevant local and national regulations.
14.0 Transport Information
UN Hazard classification : 6.1
Symbol : GHS07 (exclamation mark), GHS08 (health hazard), GHS09 (environmental hazard)

16.0 Other Information

Your attention is drawn to pages 23 and 24 of the Morgan Technical Ceramics Piezoelectric Ceramics
Catalogue (November 2007), which details how to solder to the components silver electrodes. Clamping of
components with metal plates to make electrical connections and soldering are the only permissible
operations that a customer can perform on a component. Grinding away of the silver layer and into the
piezo-ceramic material should not be attempted.
Note that as the operating temperature of a component increases, its piezoelectric performance decreases,
until complete and permanent depolarisation occurs at the materials Curie Temperature. At this point, all
piezo-ceramic properties are lost.
