Q. What is the history of The Doon School?

A. In 1928, S. R. Das, a barrister in
Manchester, United Kingdom, visited
Manchester Grammar School, a highly
academic and prestigious all boys
school. Upon his return to India, he
began plans to create for boys in India
a school based on the British Public School boarding model,
to ensure that boys in India would have the same educational
opportunities as the boys he saw in Manchester but without
having to leave their home country. He envisioned a school
which was open to all, unlike the existing boarding schools that
were open only to British pupils and Christians, and to Indias

can express himself in a variety of ways. The School seeks to

develop principled, reflective, and balanced risk-takers. Each
boy is expected to aspire to genuine intellectual achievement.
He is also expected to develop and acquire leadership and
entrepreneurial skills in school in preparation for the rest of
his professional life. Each boy is also taught to be proud of his
culture, history and place in the world, and to acquire a refined
aesthetic sense.
The School offers a broad-based curriculum culminating with
the ISC and IGSE board examinations and more recently,
the IB Diploma Programme. The curriculum at The Doon
School seeks to prepare each and every boy to understand his
unique abilities, to define goals which are both idealistic and
obtainable, and to achieve them. The Doon School operates
a seven-day-week traditional timetable with morning only
sessions on Saturdays. The curriculum is balanced and features
the full range of academic subjects at D form to SC form (Class
7-12). There is a good balance between maths and the sciences,
the humanities and the languages as well as the arts.
PLEASE NOTE THAT BOYS CAN APPLY TO
UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES OUTSIDE OF INDIA
WITH EITHER THE ISC OR THE IB.

Q. What is the pupil background?

A. Boys are admitted regardless of caste, colour or religion from

Q. What is the Schools admissions policy?

A. The School offers a six-year education, the entry level
being Class 7. A few admissions are taken in Class 8 also.
The School is academically selective, but pupils are not hothoused academically. For admission, boys are required to sit
for an examination in English, Mathematics, Hindi, Verbal and
Non- Verbal Reasoning. The ratio of prospective applicants to
successful applicants is approximately 6:1. It rises in Class 8.
Boys who pass the written part of the entrance examination
are also then interviewed. Parents are not part of that process.
The School does not have an international pupil body and thus
recruits from a much narrower pupil base in number terms
than schools internationally as well as comparable boarding
schools all over the world.PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS
NO ENTRY IN TO THE SCHOOL AFTER CLASS 8
To be eligible for admission, a boy :
(a) must be over 11 years and below 12 years in September of
the year of the entrance test to Class VII and over 12 years and
below 13 years in September of the year of the entrance test to
Class VIII. If a boy appears for Class VII in one year it follows
that he is eligible for a second attempt, in Class VIII, in the
following year.
(b) must qualify in the written test in English, Mathematics,
Hindi and two abstract reasoning tests (Verbal Reasoning and
Non-verbal Reasoning) and an interview which follows.
No boy can be considered for admission unless he has been
registered and qualifies in our Entrance Test and Interview. We
do not take into account previous school reports.
The School fee presently is Rs.
per annum and
incidental expenses are estimated at around Rs.
per

Learning in the classroom is supported by the wide clubs and

societies. Sport is played at the team and individual levels. But
sporting success is not the only aspect of the co-curriculum. The
performing and creative arts enrich the education of each and
every boy on campus. There are over ten annual publications
featuring all aspects of School life in addition to a weekly
newspaper which boys have produced every week for 75 years.
The Doon School: national pioneers in Social Service and
Social Responsibility:
Social service has been an integral part of The Doon School
since its inception. The first Headmaster, Mr. Arthur Foot
believed that the boys should leave Doon School as members
of an aristocracy, but it must be an aristocracy of service
inspired by ideas of unselfishness, not one of privilege, wealth or

position. For the decades since then, this has remained one of
the founding principles of the School. This was long before the
Indian Council for School Education (ICSE Board) structured
Socially Useful Productive Work (S.U.P.W) as an ancillary, but
mandatory part of its curriculum. Every boy is involved in a
wide variety of projects near and far as well as internationally
through the Round Square Association. Building, teaching and
medical aid are some of the examples of the work being done in
urban slum areas and villages. In 2013, the School established
a comprehensive and sustainable programme of assistance for
the disaster stricken area of Uttarkashi.
