St Dimitrios of Thessalonika
St Dimitrios was born into a noble family of the Roman province of Macedonia.
According to his noble ancestry and due to his own ability and Virtue he
rose to a high military rank under Emperor Galerius Maximian, who ruled
over the Eastern sector, and co-ruled the great Roman Empire with
Emperor Diocletian, who ruled over the Western sector.
Despite his superior social and professional status in the pagan Empire, St
Dimitrios remained fervent in Faith and Works. He secretly protected and
encouraged many Christians to endure the terrible persecution that raged
against them, and by his own good Example, He converted many pagans
to the One True Faith in Christ Jesus, which angered the pagans and
especially the pagan priests who lost vast amounts of financial and
material profits, and who were, no doubt, in fear of losing their power over
the people and their influential social status.
After a successful campaign, Emperor Maximian returned to his capital city,
Thessalonika, filled with arrogant triumph and vainglory. Pagan games
were organised, and sacrifices to the lifeless idols were offered by the
eager pagans, who believed their man-made gods had been responsible
for such victory. The pagan priests watched carefully to see who went to
make offerings to their gods, and they noticed who had not done what was
expected of every citizen.
With gleeful vengeance, St Dimitrios was denounced by those who were
envious of his success and his popularity amongst the people who
obviously Loved and respected him and he was immediately arrested
and imprisoned in a public bath-house.
One of his many visitors was a young Christian named Nestor, who asked him
for his Intercessory Prayers and his Blessings as the young gladiator was
about to contest against the popular Roman champion Lyatos (or Laeus)
who was a giant of a man - notorious for killing every one of his opponents.
St Dimitrios prayed to our Lord Jesus Christ to protect St Nestor against the
great enemy of Christians and bestowed his heartfelt Blessings and Love
upon the young contestant.
Against all odds and to the utter astonishment of the gathered multitude, St
Nestor fought so courageously until he finally defeated and killed his huge
opponent.
The scene was eerily similar to that ancient occasion when the young Royal
Psalmist, St David, faced the huge Phillistine giant, Goliath, and so
unexpectedly defeated and killed him with one stone from his sling!
The infuriated Emperor could not understand how it was possible for such a
smaller man to conquer his favourite Gladiator, who was expected to
slaughter many more Christians that same day. His eager fawning
flatterers could bearly wait to inform him that somehow St Dimitrios had
empowered and aided him, whereupon Emperor Maximian ordered St
Nestor to be arrested, dragged outside the city and beheaded, while a
squad of soldiers were sent to St Dimitrios in the bath-house where they
speared him to death.
His faithful servant, St Lupos, took possession of St Dimitrios blood-stained tunic
and signet ring, whereby many Divine Miracles were performed.
The Christian Community reverently buried St Dimitrios and St Nestor next to
each other in the bath-house where St Dimitrios had been martyred.

During the 7th century fragrant Myrrh began to miraculously emanate from
the tomb of St Dimitrios, which subsequently entitled him as Myrovlitis or
Myrrh Gusher/Streamer.
The tomb containing the Miracle Working Holy Relics of St Dimitrios is located
in the crypt of the Church of St Dimitrios in Thessalonika.
St Dimitrios is the Patron Saint of Thessalonika, having saved the city through
his Intercessory Prayers to God over the years from many invading Nations,
such as the Slavs, the Arabs, the Saracens, and many others throughout the
ages.
May his memory be Eternal and may St Dimitrios the Great Holy Martyr and
Myrrh Streamer ceaselessly Protect us and Watch over us with his
Intercessory Prayers to God for the sake of our Eternal Salvation.
