Summery of book
Scientific opinion on climate change.
Global warming, and describes the consequences he believes global climate change will produce
if the amount of human-generated greenhouse gases is not significantly reduced in the very near
future.
A centerpoint of the book is his examination of the annual temperature and CO2 levels for the
past 650,000 years.
Scientific Basis
Gore presents the Keeling curve, which shows a pattern of steadily increasing carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere since 1958.

Temperature changes
Temperature changes vary over the globe. Since 1979, land temperatures have increased about twice as
fast as ocean temperatures (0.25 °C per decade against 0.13 °C per decade). Ocean temperatures increase
more slowly than land temperatures because of the larger effective heat capacity of the oceans and
because the ocean loses more heat by evaporation. The Northern Hemisphere warms faster than the
Southern Hemisphere because it has more land and because it has extensive areas of seasonal snow.
Although more greenhouse gases are emitted in the Northern than Southern Hemisphere this does not
contribute to the difference in warming because the major greenhouse gases persist long enough to mix
between hemispheres.

An Inconvenient Truth focuses on Al Gore and his travels in support of his efforts to
educate the public about the severity of the climate crisis. Gore says, "I've been trying to
tell this story for a long time and I feel as if I've failed to get the message across." The
book closely follows a Keynote presentation that Gore presented throughout the world. It
intersperses Gore's exploration of data and predictions regarding climate change and its
potential for disaster with his own life.
