5. The natural environment

Name: ............................................................................................................................................

INITIAL EVALUATION

EVALUATION MATERIAL

1. Mark the following statements are true (T) or false (F):

Water and air are components of the physical environment.
Animals can adapt and survive in any environment.
Plants get water and minerals from the soil to make their own food.
All the living things that share a habitat interact with each other.

2. Match each living thing to its corresponding characteristic:

Ducks

They have humps where they keep fat.

Cactuses

Their spines protect them from animals.

Camels
Polar bears

They live in cold habitats and have very thick fur.

They have webbed feet that help them swim quickly.

3. Put the living things in this food chain in the correct order: small
birds, flowers, big birds and butterflies.

4. Complete the sentences with the following words:

pollutants recycle pick air habitat endangered
Human activities can change the ......................... of other living things.
Gorillas are .......................because of the destruction of the forest they live in.
Human activity produces ......................... that go into the water, soil and air.
Gas emissions from cars and factories cause ..................... pollution.
When we ........................... we use old objects to make new objects.
When we visit the countryside we should not ..........................flowers or plants.

TEMA 2

Solution to the Evaluation Test

1. Mark the following statements

3. Put the living things in this food chain

SOLUTION: True: Water and air are components of the

physical environment. / Plants get water and minerals
from the soil to make their own food. / All the living
things that share a habitat interact with each other.

SOLUTION: The correct order for living things is: flowers,

butterflies, small birds, big birds.

2. Match each living thing

SOLUTION: Ducks: They have webbed feet that help them
swim quickly. / Cactuses: Their spines protect them from
animals. / Camels: They have humps where they keep
fat. / Polar bears: They live in cold habitats and have
very thick fur.

4. Complete the sentences

SOLUTION: Human activities can change the habitat of
other living things. / Gorillas are endangered because of
the destruction of the forest they live in. / Human activity
produces pollutants that go into the water, soil, and air. /
Gas emissions from cars and factories cause air
pollution. / When we recycle we use old objects to make
new objects. / When we visit the countryside we should
not pick flowers or plants.

UNIT EVALUATION
Initial evaluation

Understand interactions between plants and animals:

competition, cooperation, etc.

The initial evaluation test in this guide aims to review some

of the concepts and procedures which students studied
during the previous year.

Define habitat, ecosystem, food chain and food web.

Recognise how humans change ecosystems and how to
protect them.

The Initial Evaluation Test on page 5-4 of this guide can

be photocopied and handed out to students to check
whether they can:
Recognise the elements of the physical environment.

Final evaluation

Match some living things to their main characteristics.

Indicate the direction in which food moves through a food
chain.
Identify the negative impact some human activity has on the
environment.
Recognise actions which help contribute towards the
protection of the environment.

The Final Evaluation Test on pages 5-28 and 5-29 of this

guide can be photocopied and given to students to see if
they can:
Explain what ecosystems, biological communities and
physical environments are.
Identify the organisms that make up a food chain.
Distinguish between pollutants and natural resources.
Understand how to preserve natural resources.

Continuous evaluation

Explain how different animals have adapted to their

environment.

See table on page 5-27 of this guide for ongoing

assessment on the following contents :

Understand how pollutants affect natural resources

around the world.

Describe the physical and biological environment.

Identify behaviour that helps protect the environment.
