INTRODUCTION
The term multimedia by definition
means

more

According

to

than

one

media.

Hofstelller(2001),

multimedia is the use of computer to

present and combine text, graphics,
audio and video with links and tools
that let the user navigate, interact
,create and communicate. In other
words,

multimedia

is

the

combination of various digital media,

into

an

interactive

integrated

multisensory

application

or

presentation to convey information

to an audience. Other than that

interactivity

is

also

part

of

the

elements that are required in order

to

complete

interactive

communication process through the

use of multimedia.
Also means the use
of

more

than

communication

two
in

media
a

of

learning

package or instructional procedure.

A teaching content of a subject
varies in nature. Therefore, it can be
best presented by using media of
communication.

Moreover,

it

facilitates the individual variation of

the

learner.

Now

multimedia

packages of learning are developed.

Different types of multimedia have
been

offered

by

educational

technology to reach large number of

students in remote and inaccessible
areas,

remove

educational

facilities

disparity
and

in

provide

individualized instruction to learners

conveniently suited to their needs
and pace of learning.

MULTIMEDIA IN TEACHING LEARNING

Multimedia

approach

has

unique

importance in the educational system

and

social

transactions.

It

has

revolutionized the lives of people in

the world. It has played an important
role in innovation and improvement in
teaching method, individualization of
instruction

and an effective learning

system for a fairly large number of

students.
Multimedia approach in teaching
and

learning

is

psychologically

sound. Variety and newness of the

media motivate the students for
learning both at the preparation

and

participation

stages

and

promote learning. Students profit

from

recreational

activities

like

pictures, charts, posters, models,

stories

and

plays,

accounts

of

travels and musical productions.

Multimedia approach in teaching
and learning is essential for the
effective
objectives
learning

realization
and

of

learning

also

provide

environment

in

which

students take active part in the

learning process.
The multimedia approach is learner
centered

that

accommodates

learners needs and interest. The

variety and flexibility of multimedia

offer the opportunity to adopt any
media

combination

for

use

in

individualized instruction.
Various types of media such as
computer,

television,

videocassettes and video disc can

be of great value in supplementing
and

enriching

the

classroom

instruction.
Media like audio cassettes and
CDs enable the learners to receive
any given information according to
their own convenient time.
IMPORTANCE OF MULTIMEDIA IN
EDUCATION

In the pre-technology education

context, the teacher is the sender
or

the

material

source,
is

the

the

educational

information

or

message, and the students is the

receiver

of

the

information.

In

terms of the delivery medium, the

educator can deliver the message
via the chalk and talk method and
overhead projector. The directed
instruction

model

is

popular

technique, which has been used for

decades as an educational strategy
in all institutions of learning.

Basically, the teacher controls the

instructional process, the content is
delivered to the entire class and
the teacher tends to emphasize
factual knowledge. In other words,
the teacher delivers the lecture
content and the students listen to
the lecture. Thus the learning mode
tends

to

be

passive

and

the

learners play little part in their

learning process.
In order to solve the
problems of traditional education
system,

multimedia

can

be

effectively used for instructional

purposes. The use of multimedia in

teaching and learning is not only

able to maintain students interest
but also able to make them enjoy
learning. Furthermore, multimedia
has the potential to create high
quality learning environments. The
key elements of multimedia user
control

over

the

delivery

of

information and interactivity can be

used

to

process

enhance
creating

the

learning
integrated

learning environment.
Multimedia is also fast emerging as
a

basic

skill

that

will

be

as

important to life in the twenty first

centuary. Multimedia is changing

the nature of reading itself.
BENEFITS OF MULTIMEDIA IN THE
CLASSROOM FOR THE LEARNING

The simplicity and the power of

multimedia

enriches

teachers

creativity and leads to multisensory

students learning. It is also a whole
lot

of

fun.

For

qualitative

improvement in teacher education

in

teachinglearning

process,

multimedia can prove as a big

breather
sustaining

as

it

the

is

capable

interest

of

of
the

learners, through visual and video

inputs. It also brings in the element

of

the

outer

world

into

the

classroom. It can help learners in

understanding

the

complex

concepts in a very simple way.

Today more emphasis is laid upon
the experience rather than rote
learning.
Multimedia is no more a big hassle,
since computers today are user
friendly

and

come

already

equipped with everything we need,

such as speakers for sound, vivid
colours and even internal CD-Rom
drives.
By using a mixed of multimedia
tools

in

teaching

and

learning

process, we can be able to change

students mindset towards a subject
and they enjoy learning and fed
motivated

to

participate

classroom activities.
Multimedia enabled

in

teaching

is

able transform dry, plan and even

difficult subjects into enjoyable and
thrilling ones. It depends on the
respective teacher how to apply
innovative and creative teaching
methods in order to accommodate
digital

students

borderline

needs

world.

The

in

this
most

important thing is that we need to

unlock our creativity inorder to be

creative.

CONCLUSION
Technology
is
changing

the

classroom experience. Information

and communication technology has
made many innovations in teaching
and learning process in order to
accommodate challenging students
needs. Consequently we need to
have

interactive

teaching

and

learning tools in order to ensure

the

learning

outcomes

achieved. this is

to

be

inevitable with

the

introduction

of

multimedia

technology.
