The
Packers
NFC
Championship Game loss in
Seattle was so last season.
Thats been the approach
around Lambeau Field
headquarters this week as
head coach Mike McCarthy
prepares his team for a rematch with the Seahawks.
Outside observers might
assume that players have
had this game circled on
their calendars since the
day regular-season schedules were released in April.
Well, if players did circle it,
their poker faces are mightily impressive.
Its just the next opponent, veteran linebacker
Julius Peppers said. We
have a great opportunity to
go out and get another win. I
think thats where the focus
is, not on who were playing.
Peppers made it a point
to avoid any mental distractions that could exist as a
result of thinking back to
Green Bays epic collapse
eight months ago. Those are
painful memories for Packers players, especially for the
35-year-old Peppers, whose
career is winding down.
Reminiscing about having a 12-point lead with five
minutes to play, yet finding
a way to lose in overtime to
Seattle, was deemed as not
being a healthy way to pre-
ON THE COVER
Eddie Lacy rushed for 73 yards on 21 carries against the Seahawks in the NFC title game. Green Bay led 16-0 at halftime but lost 28-22 in overtime. Lacy
will need to run to take pressure of Rodgers and the passing game Sunday in Green Bay.
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Chris Matthews grabs an onsides kick in the fourth quarter of Seattles victory over the Packers during the NFC Championship Game in January at CenturyLink
Field. The Packers are trying to put the loss behind them and treat Sundays rematch in Green Bay like any other game.
PACKERS
FROM PAGE 2
The Green Bay Packers are 3.5-point favorites in Sundays NFC Championship rematch against Seattle, according to online
bookmaker Bovada. Heres the breakdown:
Seattle is one of three teams in NFL history to lead the league in points allowed
for three consecutive seasons and the first
team since the famed Purple People Eaters
from Minnesota four decades ago. Seattles
unit dominated the two matchups against
the Packers powerhouse offense last season.
While Green Bay led the NFL in scoring
with 30.4 points per game, the Seahawks
limited Aaron Rodgers & Co. to a total of 38
points in the two meetings. In those games,
Rodgers threw two touchdowns vs. three interceptions. In his other 16 games, he threw
40 touchdowns and only five interceptions.
While Seattles Legion of Boom secondary gets the attention, the defense as a
whole is built around speed. Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril attack off the edges as
defensive ends. Bruce Irvin, Bobby Wagner
and K.J. Wright form the fastest linebacker
corps in the NFL, giving them the ability to
cover tight ends and backs in the passing
game and quickly close lanes in the run-
that couldnt stop Matt Forte last week. Packers coach Mike McCarthy counted doubledigit missed tackles in that game.
Wilsons 36 wins in his first three seasons
as the starter are an NFL record and his .735
winning percentage trails only Tom Brady on
the all-time list. Sure, hes been the beneficiary of a great defense, but he has succeeded despite an underwhelming supporting
cast on offense. Hes clutch, too, with 15 of
his 36 wins being fourth-quarter comebacks.
Command of the offense, McCarthy
said. Obviously, very comfortable and
makes a lot of plays with his feet. Gets the
ball out of his hand. Hes much better in the
quick game at this point in his career than
he was early in his career. Can make all the
throws. Hes an electric player. He pulls the
ball down and he tries to make plays.
Seattle made a dramatic upgrade to an offense that had little to offer beyond those two
by acquiring elite tight end Jimmy Graham
for the Saints in exchange for standout center Max Unger and a first-round pick. With
his poor blocking, Graham may be nothing
more than a glorified receiver, but what a
receiver he is. Over his past four seasons,
the 6-foot-7 Graham has averaged 88.8 receptions and 11.5 touchdowns, with never
fewer than 85 receptions, 889 yards or nine
touchdowns. Last season, Doug Baldwin
had a team-high 66 catches and nobody else
Special teams
Seattle and Green Bay drafted returners in the third round, with the Seahawks
grabbing fleet-footed Tyler Lockett and
Green Bay picking swift and powerful Ty
Montgomery. Both provided instant impact
last week, with Lockett returning a punt 57
yards for a touchdown and Montgomery returning two kickoffs for 40-plus yards. The
kickers are excellent, too. Seattles Steven
Hauschka has made 85.7 percent of his career field-goal attempts. Seattles Jon Ryan,
who spent his first two seasons with the
Packers, provides a big edge at punter over
struggling Tim Masthay.
Coaching
With each owning a Super Bowl championship, McCarthy and Carroll are two of
the best in the business. Of note, Carroll is
3-2 against the Packers, including three wins
in three seasons with the Seahawks. And for
what its worth, McCarthy is 10-5 on Sunday
nights while Carroll is 13-1 in prime-time
games.

Packers
QB Aaron Rodgers has not thrown interception at home
since Dec. 2, 2012, spanning NFL-record 418 passes.
RB Eddie Lacy has rushed for at least 90 yards in six of
last nine games, including playoffs.
LB Julius Peppers has six sacks in last five games, including postseason.
With 1,044 career points, K Mason Crosby needs 11 to
pass Ryan Longwell for franchise record.
Seahawks
TE Jimmy Graham leads tight ends in catches (361) and
yards (4,447) since 2011, is tied for first in TDs (47).
Safety Earl Thomas is only NFL player with at least 400
tackles, 16 interceptions and eight forced fumbles since
2010.
Green Bay Packers tight end Richard Rodgers avoids a tackle by Chicago
Bears safety Antrel Rolle during the first half of the Packers win Sunday in
Chicago. Chicago faces Arizona this week and looks to improve defensively.

Teddy Bridgewater did not have a good game in the Vikings Week 1 loss
to San Francisco, but the focus this week has been on the rushing defense.
when trying to find justification for the undisciplined performance by a defense that
was determined to put the
embarrassments of last season behind it.
We did a lot of uncharacteristic things there,
Zimmer said. We jumped
inside blocks a lot, we ran
underneath blocks, we didnt
fit in the right place a lot of
times, we didnt tackle good,
we didnt get off blocks, we
had one guy making the
tackle a lot of times, which is
ridiculous.
The Vikings gave up 121.4
yards rushing per game in
Zimmers first season, ranking them 25th in the league.
They didnt make significant
changes to their front seven
in the offseason, concentrating more on improving the
group that they have and
increasing their understanding in the second year of
Zimmers system.
Andrew Sendejo was a
surprise starter at safety
opposite Harrison Smith,
but Zimmer pulled him as
the game went on in part
because of his difficulties in
supporting the run. Robert
Blanton, who was believed
to be the front-runner for
the starting job when the Vikings finished the preseason,
didnt fare much better.
Gerald Hodges is the new
starter at middle linebacker,
and the eager youngster was
out of position at times while
trying to make the big play.
Rookie second-round draft
pick Eric Kendricks didnt
play well either.
He didnt play that good
either, Zimmer said. It was
equal opportunity (Monday)
night.
The starting defensive line
of Brian Robison, Everson
