Abstract
The term Web 2.0 tools is an over-arching term that refers to multi-user tools accessed
through the internet using a variety of devices. These tools enabled editing in real time, multiuser communication, and multi-media presentation of content and information. Through the use
of these tools educators have the ability to provide instruction and information to students, create
and administer assessments, and meet the needs of not only content standards but also state and
national technology standards for both students and educators. Learning within a wider
community has not only become a possibility, but a reality. Web 2.0 tools allow the space for
learning and unconventional opportunities for students to emerge as knowledge producers rather
than information collectors. Thus, it is not the tools that matter most in developing a learning
environment, but the opportunities for more personal and collaborative learning, the
enhancement of a meaningful learning atmosphere, and the space for an interactive learning
environment. The goal for this grant is to gain funds for training sessions for all teachers. The
training sessions will be designed to increase teacher knowledge of Web 2.0 tools and promote
the use of Web 2.0 tools in the classroom for instruction as well as assessment purposes. The
expected outcomes of the training will be an increased use of Web 2.0 tools in the classroom.
Proposal
Demonstrated Need
After conducting a survey of Douglas County School System teachers, we discovered
that 58% of the teachers did not even know what Web 2.0 tools are, 65% of them have never
used Web 2.0 tools in their classroom, and 60% of them do not know the benefits of using Web
2.0 tools in their classrooms. This is alarming data knowing we are working with 21st Century
Learners. Therefore, we feel it is imperative to implement Web 2.0 training for these teachers to

better prepare the students for the world in which we now live. It seems that our educational
system is built for the Industrial Revolution, but our students are living in the Digital Revolution.
Goals and Objectives
Goals:
1. By April 2016, have 80% of teachers attend Dive Into Web 2.0 professional
development training.
2. By April 2016, have 80% of teachers knowledgeable with the use of Web 2.0 tools.
3. By April 2016, have teachers implementing Web 2.0 tools in their classrooms at least
once per week.
Objectives: After attending the professional development class, teachers will be able to:
1. Define the characteristics of Web 2.0.
2. Demonstrate how to use Web 2.0 applications to transform students learning.
3. Demonstrate a variety of Web 2.0 tools that are user-friendly for both teachers and
students.
4. Evaluate what Web 2.0 tools will work best for them and the content area they teach.
5. Apply the Web 2.0 criteria checklist for future decision making over the appropriate tool
to best meet learning objectives.
Plan of Operation
The instructors will introduce Web 2.0 tools with a short slide show and demonstration
which will list the definition of Web 2.0 tools, several examples, and possible uses for Web 2.0
tools in the classroom. Through this instruction, modeled lessons, and participation educators
will learn how to effectively blend Web 2.0 tools into their classroom instruction and
assessments.

Projected Activities
1. Padlet Activity - The instructors will post the question: How are you currently using Web 2.0
tools in your classroom? Teachers will respond using Padlet. Padlet is a virtual wall where
users can express themselves on a common topic easily. Teachers will visit
http://padlet.com/mrspenn/diveintoweb2_0 and begin to interact with other professionals.
Teachers will be encouraged to post more than one response as they read other faculty
members replies. Alignment with project goals and objectives: Introduction
2. Introduction of Web 2.0 tools - The instructors will introduce Web 2.0 tools to educators
with a short slide show and demonstration. It will include the definition of Web 2.0 tools,
several examples, and possible uses for using Web 2.0 tools in the classroom. Alignment
with project goals and objectives: Goal 1, Objective 1
3. Web 2.0 Examples - The instructors will use four popular Web 2.0 tools (Edmodo, Glogster,
Prezi, and Scratch) as examples for the educators to get an idea and feel for what Web 2.0
tools are and how to integrate them into their classrooms. Alignment with project goals and
objectives: Goal 1, Goal 2, Objective 1, Objective 3
4. Create Mini-lessons - The educators will select the Web 2.0 tool of their choice and create a
mini-lesson using that tool for the content area they teach. Alignment with project goals and
objectives: Goal 1, Goal 2, Objective 1, Objective 2, Objective 3
5. Presenting Mini-lessons to small group - The educators will present their mini-lessons to
each other and discuss ways in which it could be adapted for different grade levels and
content areas. The instructors will monitor and select several educators with great minilessons to present to the large group. Alignment with project goals and objectives: Goal 1,
Goal 2, Goal 3, Objective 1, Objective 2, Objective 3, Objective 4

6. Presenting Mini-lessons to large group - Selected educators will present their mini-lessons
to the large group and time will be allotted for discussion on ways in which the lesson could
be adapted for different grade levels and content areas. The instructors will add any
information and answer any questions as they are needed. Alignment with project goals and
objectives: Goal 1, Goal 2, Goal 3, Objective 1, Objective 2, Objective 3, Objective 4
7. Exploring Web 2.0 Tools - The participants will explore Web 2.0 tools not discussed during
the training. The instructors will facilitate participant research & answer any questions as
needed. The participants will create a brief presentation on the Web 2.0 tool they learned
about and share out to small groups. Alignment with project goals and objectives: Goal 1,
Goal 2, Objective 2, Objective 3
8. Presentation over content delivery, digital citizenship, and assessment uses - The instructors
will discuss appropriate uses for Web 2.0 tools with educators. Some of those include
content delivery, digital citizenship, and assessments. The instructors will also discuss
appropriate times to use Web 2.0 tools. Alignment with project goals and objectives: Goal
1, Goal 2, Goal 3, Objective 5

Evaluation Plan
All teachers will be required to sign-in when they attend a session. The attendance of
each session will be reported to the director of professional learning, Dr. Rhonda Baldwin. This

log will allow the professional development team to keep track of the percentage of teachers that
have attended the training.
After the training session is complete, participates will be asked to fill out a short survey
about their experience. This survey will advise the professional development team to the
usefulness of the training. This survey can be found in Appendix B.
At the end of the school year, the participants will be asked to fill out another short
survey. This survey will advise the professional development team of the teachers that are using
the skills they learned during the training in their classrooms. It will also allow the professional
development team to evaluate if the goals of the training were met. This survey can be found in
Appendix C.

Budget
The following table provides an itemized budget for the Dive into Web 2.0 Tools
professional development proposal. The first item on the budget is for the instructors; the
training requires two instructors for six sessions throughout the school year. These sessions will
occur on allotted teacher in-service professional development days. Each school will sign their

teachers up for the sessions that work best for them. Each instructor will receive a stipend of
$200 a day. Instructors are certified personnel with extensive training and experience using Web
2.0 tools.
Bottles of water and a small snack will be provided for each teacher during each training
session. Teachers are not provided lunch. Therefore, they will be expected to either bring their
own lunch or purchase one during their lunch break.
According to the Douglas County Board of Education Budget, the total amount for FY 2015
allocated for improvement of student and teacher success (Professional Development)
throughout the entire school system is $3,159,189.21. The total amount needed to complete the
Web 2.0 tools professional development program is $7,889.78. Looking at the budget for FY14
and FY15, there was not an increase within the budget for professional development. However,
with the increase in the need for Web 2.0 tools and training, $7,889.78 is certainly a reasonable
amount to provide training for teachers across the Douglas County School System.
