Another Milestone for the Spiritan Catholic Center Foundation Cebu

Fr Martin Okafor-Ilozue CSSp

On the 26th of
July being Sunday,
the
Spiritan
scholars in Barangay T. Padilla
Cebu City trooped to the Sports
Complex opposite the Center
building with their parents and
invited friends to mark the 7th
anniversary of the Foundation.
It was another great moment
to thank God for using the
Center in helping some of the
poor families in the vicinity in
sending their Children to school
to make sure that no one is left
at home.
The Spiritan Center started in
2008 by the Congregation of
the Holy Spirit to cater for the
needs of the squatter people of
Barangay T. Padilla, Cebu City.
The Center started with 27
children since 2009 and

presently has 62 children for the

school year 201 5 201 6 and
have more than 250 children
passed through the center on
annual enrollment in the past 6
years.
The day started like any other
day, of course with all the
preparation and practices done
by the students before then to
make sure that the anniversary
would be a thing to remember.
The Holy Mass started about
1 1 .20am, this was followed by
the program proper. In
attendance was the Vice Mayor
of Cebu City, Hon. Edgar
Labella.
Some Nigerian students and
other
Barangay
officials,
notably Hon Michael Ralota,
who not only was the Captain in
the beginning days of SCCF

and allowed us to use the

present office, but also gave a
lecture in the local language
about the history of Spiritan and
why we are in the area using the
charism of our congregation of
working among the poor.
The children
presented
dances and dramas according
to each team and other
entertainments. Later in the day
lunch was served to all present,
about 200 people, thanks to
donors and sponsors. I would
like to use this medium to thank
all our sponsors both here in the
Philippines and outside for all
these years of unalloyed
support of the program of
Spiritans in Barangay T. Padilla
Cebu City. May God bless us
all.

Pope Francis: Who Is Jesus For Me?

Vatican Radio - 08.23.201 5

Who is Jesus for me? At the

end of his Angelus address on
Sunday, Pope Francis called on
the faithful to ask themselves
this question. Who is Jesus for
me? Is He simply a name? an
idea? A person from history? Or
is He really someone who loves
me, Who gave His life for me,
and walks with me?
The Pope asked if we would
remain with Jesus, referring
back to the days Gospel. In
Sundays reading, some of
Jesus disciples left Him,
because He had disappointed
their expectations of a worldly
Messiah, a leader that would be
immediately successful. But

Jesus said He was the Bread

come down from Heaven, Who
would give His Flesh for food
and His Blood for drink clearly
pointing to the sacrifice of His
own life. The disciples who left
Jesus misunderstood the
disturbing language of the
Master.
But Peter confessed his faith,
and that of the other Apostles:
Lord, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal
life. Pope Francis said Peters
question to whom shall we go
reveals that the problem is not
one of leaving and abandoning
the work one has begun, but is
rather a question about a

Women Leaders Tasked to Develop New Sharers

Right after the breakfast
fellowship one Saturday, former
Visayas Area Managing Director
(AMD) Nelson Dauz and former CH
Jun and Nery Gula, actually the
workshop panelists themselves,
quickly gathered together the lady
Governance team; the wives of the
chapter head, the directors and unit
leaders for a very special mission.
Calling it work-shopping the workshoppers, they exhorted the lady
leaders of the chapter to work
together to produce new sharers
from among the new members as
well as the older members as well.
Emphasizing the breakfast as the
main tool for evangelization of the
BCBP, the elders gave importance
to the ladies' important role in
supporting the prime movers, their

husbands, to sacrifice and die a

part of themselves to reach out to
potential sharers. To cite a few tips
they gave to them;
- to make the sharing powerful,
focused and fitted for the first
timers, not more for the
members
- no mentioning of deeper
community lingo like tithegiving, service involvements or
harassments, it is not necessary
for the first timers, or they may
scare them off
- to produce a focused or themed
sharing, not the chop-suey kind
of sharing, so that the sharer
can share as many versions as
he/she can
- talk it over the potential sharer interview type, do not just

person: To whom shall we

go? From Peters question, the
Pope said, we understand that
faithfulness to God is a question
about faithfulness to a person.
All that we have in this world, he
continued will not satisfy our
hunger for the infinite. We need
Jesus, we need to remain with
Him, to nourish ourselves at His
table, on His words of eternal
life.
When we are attached to
Jesus, in a true relationship of
faith and love, we are not
bound, but rather, are
profoundly free as we journey
with Him through life.
exchange letters or emails, a
form to fill up may help
- dig at the heart of the potential
sharer, get current issues, find
facts, how did God brought
them to the renewal
At the conclusion of the meeting,
the 3 pillars then emphasized that
the sharing must in the end make
the first timers know not only the
sharers, but moreso they must
know Jesus, they must see and
realize the hand of God on the life
of the sharer.

Some learnings in life: Be kind to yourself. Looking good is feeling good

inside. You are not out to please everybody. Expect little but do more.

Chapter Head's Message: Grace Over Nature

Orly Manuel - Chapter Head - BCBP Mactan BCLP 1

Congratulations,
graduates
of
BCMR 21 !!!
And so too to
our teams of
servants and other individuals
who, by God's grace, allowed
themselves to be instruments of
God's wondrous work of
transforming, renewing, and restrengthening marriages and
family relationships!!!
Going into preparation took
much of everyones time, effort,
and attention. Patience and
humility were put to the test;
and some of us were even
anxious about unity and
harmony within the group, even

as others were harassed and

subjected to trials and
difficulties.
Human nature
caused many of us to worry.
In the end, we can only pray
and lift up our needs and
concerns to the Lord of
Service that He may bless us in
his own way, in his own terms,
in his own timing; that He may
make things happen in his own
gracious way.
And God has truly shown us
his favor, giving us 24 couple
graduates, 5 from our Bogo
Outreach and 1 9 from our very
own BCLP 21 and BCLP 22
graduates!
Thanks for the
continued help and support of

God's
Mighty Deeds
Nery Gula - BCBP Mactan BCLP 1

For a very
successful BCMR
21 , praise God
and congratulations!
BCMR21
taught
the
community, its leaders and
members as well, many lessons
on faith.
The harassments thrown its
way caused pains, sleepless
nights, strained relationships,
drained pockets, stress and
fatigue. All of which are nothing
compared to the great
overflowing joy that fills the
heart as we witnessed how God
transformed the lives of the
participants.
The BCMR taught us to let
God and His mercy take control

when there was nothing

humanly possible that we can
do. Like the Course Leaders
two sons who had to be
admitted days before the
BCMR due to dengue. But God
is good. The second boy was
discharged on the day they
gave the talk on Sex and
Marriage the most enjoyable
talk of the weekend retreat.
It also taught us the futility of
worrying about the future. As it
turned out, the many What ifs
we were concerned about did
not happen. Why worry when
we can pray? Indeed when we
pray, God works in mysterious
and wonderful ways.
All these just show us that in

our elders and senior leaders!

The activity too allowed us to
find the opportunity to be
restored and reconciled to one
another; and while lesions and
wounds may take some time to
heal, God who is rich in mercy,
has opened up an avenue to
free us from the enslaving effect
of hatred and resentment.
Yes, Gods grace prevails over
human nature indeed! And so
we continue to pray that the
Lords healing love may keep us
from needless distractions in
our community relationships!
To God alone be honor and
glory!

whatever service we do in the

our best and let God do the

God can survive any problem that may occur in his life. Keep that faith and trust.

Intercessor of the Month: Saint Padre Pio de Pietrelcina

Francesco, named in
honor of St. Francis of
Assisi, was born to
Giuseppa and Grazio
Forgione, peasant farmers,
in the small Italian village of
Pietrelcina on May 25,
1 887. From his childhood, it
was evident that he was a
special child of God. He
was very devout even as a
child, and at an early age
St. Padre Pio de felt
drawn
to
the
Pietrelcina
priesthood. He became a
Feast Day: September 23 Capuchin novice at the age
of sixteen and received the habit in 1 902. Francesco
was ordained to the priesthood in 1 91 0 after seven
years of study and became known as Padre Pio.
On September 20, 1 91 8, Padre Pio was kneeling
in front of a large crucifix when he received the
visible marks of the crucifixion, making him the first

stigmatized priest in the history of the Church. The

doctor who examined him could not find any natural
cause for the wounds. Upon his death in 1 968, the
wounds were no longer visible. In fact, there was no
scarring and the skin was completely renewed. He
had predicted 50 years prior that upon his death the
wounds would heal. The wounds of the stigmata
were not the only mystical phenomenon experienced
by Padre Pio.
The blood from the stigmata had an odor
described by many as similar to that of perfume or
flowers, and the gift of bilocation was attributed to
him. Padre Pio had the ability to read the hearts of
the penitents who flocked to him for confession
which he heard for ten or twelve hours per day. He
used the confessional to bring both sinners and
devout souls closer to God; he would know just the
right word of counsel or encouragement that was
needed. Even before his death, people spoke to
Padre Pio about his possible canonization. He died
on September 23, 1 968 at the age of continued on page 6
