Home assignment: Imagine you are a journalist sent to interview Nasruddin, his
wife or his father and write a newspaper article.
One day Nasruddin was expecting some guests for supper, so he bought some
goats meat for his wife to cook. When the guests have arrived, his wife served lots
of vegetable dishes but no meat she had already eaten it herself.
Wheres the meat inquired Nasruddin.
The cat ate it all three ponds of it, replied his wife.
Nasruddin called for some scales, then weighed the cat. It weighed exactly three
pounds.
There seems to be slight problem, said Nasruddin. If this is the cat, then where
is the meat? And if this is the meat, than what has happened to the cat?
One day Nasruddins father told him, You should always get up very early in the
morning.
Why is that, Father? asked Nasruddin.
Well, for example, once when I went for a walk in the morning I found a bag of
money lying in the road.
But perhaps it was lost the previous night? suggested Nasruddin.
No, no, said father, I did not see it there the night before.
Well in that case getting up early cant be good for everyone, said Nasruddin.
The man who lost the money must have been up even earlier than you were.
A haiku is a Japanese verse-form based on syllables. It usually has three lines of 5,
7 and 5 syllables. The object of a haiku is to capture the special quality of
particular experiences in a very concrete way.

There is another Japanese verse-form, called a tanka. This follows the haiku form
for the first three lines (5-7-5 syllables). It then adds two lines, each of 7 syllables.

did we really come so far?
