EstablishingaDesignStressforVinylSheetPiling
The minimum tensile strength of Vinyl for use in a
building product is designated by its ASTM cell
classification.Thisistheonlystressvaluethatshouldbe

materials produced by CMI are designated with the
structuralcharacteristicsofcellclassification14244333,
meaning they will meet or exceed a minimum tensile
strength of 6,500 psi. From Equation 1 above, use this

Usinganinputstressof3,200psiandamaximumstrain
of 2.5%, a design life of just over 100 years is predicted
for Vinyl, further validating the use of 3,200 psi. This
relationshipbetweenstressanddesignlifeisexponential

will result in a significantly shorter expected life. For
example, 3,200 psi results in a service life 30% longer
than 3,300 psi (a difference of only 100 psi) and 250%
longerthan3,700psi.
